Astariel

Oh goddamn it, Becky.

Logibear

two...one... They really speedran the hug. Unless next strip is just three panels of hug, then Leslie trying to move her arm and Becky is like "No stop!, more hug"

KittyKai

BEEEEECKYYYYYYY CONFIDE IN HEEEEEERRRRRRR COME OOOOOONNNNNN

Ragtime

Begrudgingly gained a small amount of respect for Becky here.

C

...Why is communication so hard for people? If you've got issues, TALK ABOUT THEM WITH SAID PERSON.

Sajuuk-Khar

I don’t know what you expected

Logibear

But that would require being vulnerable. And being vulnerable is ga... ohhhh.

Sajuuk-Khar

The part about how she’s the problem and something is fundamentally wrong with her, I expect is what she means Especially since Dina, uh, confirmed it

Ria

Like honestly I'm just proud of Becky for sharing anything with Leslie in the first place

Corronchilejano

I think it means that for Becky, Dina isn't at Joyce's level.

Andrea Andrew

So she really was just using Dina to get over Joyce, and it didn’t work?

Harold

Sympathy through light physical contact.

Sajuuk-Khar

@Corronchilejano: I really don’t think that enters into it, at all. Why would it. It’s not about that. Becky has said over and over, and the arc name, is that she is the problem. Dina said she was the problem and left. What is Becky supposed to think.

Sajuuk-Khar

Hot take, but it’s EXTRA hard to be vulnerable with someone when the last time you were vulnerable by default and said that you were garbage, they said “yeah, you are” and walked off

Fart Captor

DAMN IT BECKYYYYYY SHE CAN HELP MORE IF YOU TALK MORE YOU BIG GAY DUMB HEAD

Sajuuk-Khar

@Andrea: I, uh, really don’t think that’s the case. Becky’s feelings for Dina were very clearly genuine. They just didn’t outweigh the feelings for Joyce enough to stop things from hurting, and Dina decided that this was enough of a value difference and detriment to end everything relationship-wise

Andrea Andrew

Yeah. I realized how dumb my observation was in that question.

Fart Captor

She wasn't using Dina, she just never had the same kinda irrational infatuation with her that she had with Joyce and she thinks that Dina deserves better 😓

Harold

@Andrea Andrew: I don't think Becky was using Dina. She loves her. But she'd been harboring those feelings for Joyce for *years*, and the only way she felt able to push them aside was her security in the knowledge that Joyce could never reciprocate them, because she was heterosexual. Once *that* went out the window, Becky's mindset changed to, "So it was *me* all along."

C

I mean, you're not wrong (well, the word garbage wasn't used, but I see your point)...but running on assumptions without communication have always been my biggest pet peeve in relationship stuff.

voyager-ngc5195

I do respect the way both Dina and Becky have maturely handled this breakup. It'll be a nice contrast when... err... if the whole Joyce and Dorothy thing inevitab... err... possibly explodes. Like a frigging supernova.

Gale Tazzin

the truth here is that Becky really is still jealous she didn't get to date Joyce and that Dina really was her second choice. communicating that any further will just dig the hole deeper

Kelly (they-them)

Becky may be an atheist now, but she can't escape the Christian side hug

Sky Starlight

I'M NOT CRYING YOU'RE CRYING! 😭😭😭

C.T. Phipps

"If I can't have Gay Joyce, I don't want nobody, baby."

C

If she needs to talk to Joyce first then fine, but staying in this situation where she's at now wouldn't help anyone involved in said situation.

Girlycore

I think Becky doesn't want help right now. She wants comfort.

Dan Rabin

The fact that they're walking may have influenced the form of the hug.

SmurfJuice

Truly there's nothing so damaging about being raised to conflate the hand you're dealt in life with what you deserve, as the assumption that other people's behavior towards you is a consequence of what you've earned by merely existing. Or, to be more specific: Joyce not having feelings for Becky is a reflection of Joyce's perspective, mindset, and emotional needs not lining up with Becky's... not a sign that Becky doesn't deserve to have what she desires. The misperception that correlation equals causation is what is really hurting Becky, here. And were it not for her religious upbringing reinforcing that thinking, she could probably have let go of that notion without so much suffering.

Shane Wegner

(You are of course right but: ) Is this a lesson Toedad (and her mom) would have been able to model for her to learn? Most of what people know about how relationships work they get from their parents.

Zesstra

In the same boat, I would rather stop and have a proper hug. My first reaction to the strip was "You call that a hug?"

thejeff

And of course, she's not ready to talk about it, at least not to Leslie, so we're left wondering too.

joe mcguire

The only true unforgivable thing is assuming you are beyond forgiveness. It’s a cop out. If you know there’s no going back then you convince yourself that there’s no point in trying. And maybe there isn’t, maybe you won’t be forgiven, but you’re not doing anything noble by not trying to make amends. Forgiveness is a gift to the giver, but for the person who has made the mistake, the first person that needs to forgive them is themselves. You need to be willing to try to make things better— to be brave enough to say “I said or did something bad; I hurt you, and I’m sorry. I don’t want to justify what I did, I just want to acknowledge that I was thoughtless and/or cruel, and hope that’s the first step to making things right. I might not deserve forgiveness, but I want to make things as better as we can get them.”

Tessea

Truth is important! Becky still needs to actually talk with Dina, though. It's gonna be hard and scary and make what's happening _real_ , but if Becky still wants Dina she has to put that effort in despite the chance of rejection. Nothing unforgivable has been said.

Corronchilejano

@Sajuuk-kar it is only about that because Becky understands how that is a problem and how Dina deserves better than she being in love with someone else that doesn't even love her back. What do you think the problem is? I think we're both saying the same thing differently. Becky just realized how things are and hates it right now.

C

Yeah, no, Toedad was a terrible rolemodel for sure.

Maude Reads Things

Yeah, this is not a 'helping' talk, this is a 'I'm sad, mom' talk
