“Good old Joyce Brown. HOW I HATE HER”

el

oh this is a good one... Dina actually looking annoyed is really sick

Fart Captor

SHE'S ALREADY PERFECT A PERFECT DUMMIE WHO NEEDS TO BE CHOMPED ON UNTIL SHE STARTS MAKING BETTER DECISIONS

Rob McBobson

Well! Joe was standing outside, not hearing what was said, after all! I stand corrected!

Gale Tazzin

Joyce telling Dina to keep dating Becky as if nothing had changed makes me think about Becky continuing to have a crush on Joyce as if nothing has changed

Gale Tazzin

he's too chivalrous for his own good right now

Astariel

Oh dear, that's not a good look.

Corronchilejano

Dina just fully decided to stay away from Becky didn't she.

Logibear

Are we getting close to it being a flip of the coin these days?

Gale Tazzin

Raidah's gonna try to recruit Dina into her Revenge On Joyce Club and Dina will be like "you infantilized me last semester, you are not my ally"

Logibear

methinks Dina might not be convinced here

HenryVolt

Yeah I'm sure that day will definitely come. Jokes aside, Joyce is surrounded by very patient friends...also got to love the call backs.

Rob McBobson

By the way, what's Joe quoting, and what's the interaction between him and Dina in plain language? I don't understand what's being said, and what Dina's reply means.

tifani

To sort of quote a meant to be cute but super creepy when you think on it moment in an okay not great but not the worst thing ever movie (love actually) “to him she is perfect.”

5099 5618 v2.0

She really did just walk off without talking to Joe, didn't she? Is this man auditioning for sainthood, or something?

Harold

Well, panel 1 represents at least *some* progress for Joyce. At least she's acknowledging that her intervention might *not* have worked, instead of answering with a triangle-smile and saying something like, "Yep, everything's going to be just fine and the wedding is tomorrow!"

tifani

No she told him she tried. They already agreed they’re talking later.

voyager-ngc5195

Hearing Centaurworld's Becky Apples song (no relation) in the background while reading this comic... "Bеcky Apples, Becky Apples! What a gorgeous fancy schmuck Becky, how you like them apples? ’Cause I think your apples suck!" Show really was a trip...

KittyKai

...I take back the criticism I said in the last comic. Dina *definitely* wasn't completely convinced and I'm both liking the drama shaping up, and also very scared of the drama shaping up a;lskdjfa;lskdjf

Dan Rabin

Interesting camera angles, with the view from on high of Joe, Joyce, and the dinosaur plushie through the door yielding to and angle that looks up at both Joe and Dina, with the horizon line offscreen. Having Joe and Dina both watching Joyce recede down the hall is very effective in feelings-space. Whatever overlap there is between their emotions, they're both emoting about Joyce.

HenryVolt

Just leave him on the shelf like that one toy she got bored with while she plays with her new one.

Tesset

Joe's quoting himself from a workout session with Jacob in the immediate aftermath of the Joyce/Jacob fake dating thing. Basically Joe saying that Joyce is continually improving and eventually she'll be a better person than they are. https://www.dumbingofage.com/comic/situation/

Harold

@Rob McBobson: As Dan Rabin notes in another thread, Joe is quoting his own words to Jacob in this strip: https://www.dumbingofage.com/comic/situation/ Joe is remembering that conversation, and I think he's saying that Joyce is closer to perfect now than she was then. Dina begs to differ.

Tesset

And Dina's doubting whether that projection can really apply to Joyce, who she can't really ever imagine as "perfect."

Logibear

Last panel may also be Dina letting out a massive silent fart and Joe just noticed.

Fart Captor

Becky thinking she NEEDS to be perfect to be worthy of Dina is a big part of the dang problem!

Ben Wray

Looks like Joyce should have actually looked up that dinosaur fact!

Fart Captor

"Perfect is the enemy of the sapphic"

Kazo

I think that's the closest we've gotten to Dina saying 'BULLSHIT'.

Verteiron

Works the other way around, too.

Rob McBobson

I honestly believe that it'll *probably* take at least until December before we get an actual conversation between Joe and Joyce about their relationship, and almost *definitely* until December before they and Dorothy reach a decision.

C Bonesmith

I think it's more like Dina's sick of Joyce.

MrShoggoth

Glad I'm not the only one who noticed its absence!

Simon Magid

Perhaps we could all learn to love delayed gratification? o.O

Shane Wegner

Either Dina can accept a partner who has a flaming internal torch for a friend she grew up with who doesn’t want her back that will fade away with time, OR, she’s not ready to deal with alla dat and will want to look for a partner with different, non-that baggage. Does Becky’s Good+Bad add up to a net win? Is she better with Becky or without? I could see a sensible case for either. The fact that Becky appears to be, thus far, throwing in the towel and giving up on trying to reconcile isn’t helping matters.

Shane Wegner

If the coyote ever actually catches the road runner, the show is over.

Shane Wegner

Ahh, the Minnesota Multiphasic Chompological Protocol (MMCP), a dependable standby for tough-love interventions.

Jennifer Novelli

Well, as Yahtzee would say, it wasn't like "our heroes tragically and climactically get a bit hot, and everyone has lemonade."

jafortee

Joe really struggles to set the emotional boundaries that he needs to be happy. It looks like unconditional love for Joyce, but the way that he pines for a partner that doesn’t really appreciate him can come off as codependent. Story probably can’t let him grow out of this soon, but I’m hopeful that he’ll be happy at the end.

Harold

Dina: "On the one hand, I *do* want to get Becky back. On the other hand, if we do *not* get back together, I will not need to interact with Joyce as much, which would be a good thing because the kindest thing *I* can do for Joyce is to not murder her. Decisions, decisions."

Jasmijn Wellner

Thanks! I was gonna look up what he was referencing but I hoped someone would have done the work for me!

Empress of Robots

I love how Dina continues to be the voice of the main site comments section lol

Harold

@Simon Magid: Dumbing of Edge

tifani

If anything I think this conversation will be the start of Joyce calming the fuck down a little and reflecting on her behaviors after a long stretch of obnoxiously refusing to do so which will be nice.

tifani

I really think he’s being incredibly healthy about this whole thing. He’s giving her space to figure her shit out. It’s been three days. He’s not co dependent AT ALL. If any of Joyce’s partners are in danger of creating that kind of dynamic with her it’s not Joe. It’s Dorothy. Joe’s the one who encourages her to grow and change and explore. We’ve seen her and Dorothy isolate themselves and create a dynamic that reinforces some of their uglier qualities and Dorothy actively makes a habit of trying to mold Joyce into what she wants her to be. I really think people have to stop looking at Joe’s willingness to sit with some discomfort to give someone he loves the chance to sort themselves out instead of harassing her and forcing her into decisions she’s not ready to make as something to be pitied. Patience is a goddamn virtue, remember? I don’t have any of it but I can respect this man who has it in heaps apparently.

Tessea

Now I'm picturing Joyce wearing the Charlie Brown shirt while Raidah pulls the football away.

jafortee

“Differing of Opinions” is a great name for the DoA comment section

Andrea Andrew

I really thought Joyce and Dina were becoming friends, but it looks like Dina still doesn’t like her.

Andrea Andrew

At least she’s not as bad as Reddit and discord.

Harold

@jafortee: It was between that and “No, YOU’RE the Dummy”
