no one should have to suffer that much

I gave this same advice to someone recently, and it feels strange coming out of my mouth, but there are those rare special people who really forget to ever want anything for themselves. And everyone deserves something

"I still have not gotten over the Flintstone kids consuming so-called 'bronto-burgers'."

Logibear

Panel 2 Joyce is someone who is right on the cusp of the most insane hedonistic bender that would make Caligula blush.

VengeanceKnight

Man, every moment that shows just how much Dina loves Becky by contrasting Becky with her special interest in dinosaurs is so sweet. I can sort of relate to that in that I hope I find someone I love just as much as my special interest (the DCU).

MST3K.fan: The Cheesy Movie Essays

Joyce is absolutely right. Most people don't learn this until much later in life. It's important to fight for the things in your life that make you happiest and most fulfilled. Even if you feel like you don't deserve those things.

Dan Rabin

I like the way the last three panels work, with Dina in the same posture, processing, but the frame widening in the final panel to show Joyce smiling at Dina having gotten what she had to say.

Railway Series Book Club

i love what joyce is saying here but unfortunately i'm a bad person and i want dina and becky to not get back together. i hope becky gets blackpilled and they blow up even worse than before

Lazuli

theres a however in this

Astariel

Last panel Dina is spot on. I would be tickled pink if Joyce's intervention actually works and Dina and Becky get back together. Unfortunately, I suspect that Becky and her internalized self-loathing will be a bigger obstacle to that happening. It's also interesting how Joyce's language is echoing what Joe told her about her and Dorothy, that he wanted her to have the things that she wanted. I wonder if Joe will add anything before we cut away.

Lisa

I think that Dina's objection is that she deserves _better_. That she doesn't deserve to be relegated to Becky's fallback plan. She accepted it at the beginning (when Sarah named it and she said "I know"), but she thought that Becky had moved beyond that, and it hurts to know that she still hasn't.

"For example, the things that *I* want are more Keener-gasms, and I'ma go get some more of those right now"

Mariah

I thought it would be interesting if becky had a player era similar to ethan I love dina and becky but don't think I need to marry my college girlfriend is a healthy mindset for becky maybe she needs time to figure herself out.

Buck Caldwell

I need a happy ending to this weekend. We all do. Please, please, please.

MST3K.fan: The Cheesy Movie Essays

That would makes sense if Dina was really Becky's fallback plan. Becky is lying to herself because she feels like she's not good enough for someone like Dina. Joe is the only person so far that's figured this out.

C.T. Phipps

That is a very weird definition of selfishness.

CoreyWW

Oh wow, Joyce might have actually managed to Kinda Sorta execute what she set out to do. We can therefore conclude that lesbian sex with Dorothy clinically improves executive functioning skills.

jafortee

I suspect Dina would love Paleo Pines but abhor its execution

Railway Series Book Club

@mariah this is pretty much where i am lol. i think it'd be fun to see becky have a slut era! she deserves nice things! (nice things is code for sex with many, many women)

voyager-ngc5195

I'm glad we decided Joe had left because, panel 2 in the context of him still being in the room...

C

Rooting for Becky and Dina to work things out, for Becky to get to a healthier place with her feelings for Joyce, while Dina gets the respect she deserves.

Mitzi B.

No, he's here, sitting in some kinda chair presumably

EnterTheHero

Well, it is Dorothy. I get the feeling she improves executive function through sheer presence.

Empress of Robots

Joyce uses Awkward Empathy! It's somewhat effective!

Empress of Robots

Also: I am now rooting for Dina to fuck Becky until she looses the ability to remember her own name (let alone that name of any other woman she has ever had a crush on besides Dina).

Lisa

Wait, really? I guess I'm among those who haven't figured it out! I'm having trouble seeing it, but it's a really interesting take. How can you tell that that's what's going on for Becky?

Katrina Marie Paton

So what is the name of this TV show with accurately portrayed dinosaurs then?

Logibear

Dina walks into Becky's room hatless wearing a suit... *three days later*...

Logibear

Jim Henson's Dinosaurs.

Tessea

Isn't this pretty much exactly what Joe (who has a 95% chance of still being in the room) told Joyce? I do appreciate how Joyce tends to be one of the most positive non-Agatha characters.

5099 5618 v2.0

Progress? Well, not a step back, at least.

5099 5618 v2.0

I mean, Dina could have thrown a punch and not been 100% in the wrong, here.

SomeKindaNerd

I agree, but then again I'm kind of in the camp of Joyce and Dorothy needing more consequences

Logibear

Rooting for Becky to realize that her infatuation was with the concept of Joyce and the security she represented during her years of turmoil, rather than the person Joyce actually was. Rooting for Joyce to come to the realization that what she is preaching here is basically what Joe posited to her when she intended to break up with him... Rooting for Dina to get the dino-representation she needs.

thejeff

"I'm the problem. It's me." I'm not sure it's quite as simple as that, but I think there's a lot more going on than just her crush on Joyce and a lot of it is rooted in Becky's trauma and insecurity.

thejeff

And maybe some Joe-gasms as well?

Shane Wegner

The urban dictionary term for said side hotel room seats is “cuck chairs”. 🤣

Donny K

She's right, the world should not be cruel enough to give us Abdominus Rex AND a break up.

Logibear

"brb, gonna give this guy a Joe-Face"

InkyD

I think Sarah and Dina were mistaken in calling this the backup plan. Joyce didn’t want Becky (regardless of her apparent sexuality!) and so that’s the wound for Becky either way. She has to move on, and Dina was her first choice post-Joyce (not her second Joyce, you might say). That’s not a backup - that’s progress. Getting hung up on someone’s ex or past crush is no way to be kind to yourself.

joe mcguire

Hmmm. Well they should at least try talking. Idk if I understand what Joyce is suggesting here. Like, is she saying to ignore what happened? Does Joyce even fully understand what happened? I agree that I think Dina and Becky could get past this if Becky doesn’t brand herself as unforgivable and Dina chooses to be forgiving. But being forgiving is different than ignoring the situation. I always kind of thought their relationship was good but built on a kind of shaky foundation given that Becky was sort of on the rebound at the time, and this proves that that was an underlying problem in their dynamic, but now with it out in the open they have the chance to rebuild on an even footing or take what they’ve learned about themselves and each other and find other partners on even footing. There are multiple ways this could turn into a good thing, but they all require Becky and Dina actually having a conversation about it.

KittyKai

I am so conflicted. I like Joyce's sentiment, and I think this peek into how she views all of this and her perspective isn't just so goddamn sweet, but it completely fits her character. ... but I have a hard time feeling like this is what Dina needs to hear right now??? Like, I think she's valid in how she feels like she's a second choice for Becky, Becky isn't saying ANYTHING to calm those insecurities, and I wish more of a spotlight was put on that. Not to say Becky or Joyce are bad people - Becky's also valid in her feelings even though she is choosing the most self destructive way of addressing them. I just have a hard time believing it'll be this easy for Dina. Becky has some growing to do, and I really hope that gets addressed. Fingers crossed though! Am rooting for both ships 💜

tifani

It is and it’s why I really think this whole interaction is what’s going to lead to Joyce realizing she can be selfish to and have Dorothy AND Joe. Despite her whole attitude of embracing what she wants she still clearly has a lot of fundie hang ups. Her fear of being a “hussy” aka “poly reluctance” is basically just a fear of how large her wants actually are and it’s still a form of self denial which is something she’s comfortable with because it’s the whole point of her religion. Denying that you’re someone with lust and wants. It’s why she actively avoided Joe for two days because being in the same room with him makes her deal with still wanting him. But if Joyce is going to be who she actually is instead of just going all in on whatever the latest thing she’s using to fill the God shaped hole in her life (hyper-fixating on just Dorothy to the exclusion of everything else) then she’s gotta embrace the parts of herself that make her uncomfortable because pretending they aren’t there doesn’t make them go away it just makes you weird in a not fun way. Aka how she’s been since the kiss.

~Shaaaa naa na na-na-na naaaa.... Na-na-na naaa...~

Lisa

Oh, I think I get it! So Becky's jealousy (to use her word) is not because (or not just because) she still wishes _she_ was with Joyce, but because Joyce's rejection hurt a lot less when everyone thought it was just an incompatible sexuality. Thanks for explaining it.

MST3K.fan: The Cheesy Movie Essays

Yes that’s it exactly. It was much easier to rationalize when it was “Joyce is straight.” Now that she isn’t, it’s much harder for Becky to take.

Tessea

Dina's saying that's something she's being denied because there isn't one. Now she's being denied Becky as well. Both at the same time is unacceptable!

Katrina Marie Paton

My point was she's going to end up with accurately portrayed dinosaurs before she ends up with Becky. However, recent events suggest that may not be the case.
