A. I want to see Asma sidle sideways and check out the name Joyce entered, and B. Oh, Dorothy, queen dorcus.

Morgan Byrd

Four steps Dotty, you need to take four steps

C

...Learn by doing might work better if you start off simpler Dorothy, just roll the ball straight down the lane. >_>

Sajuuk-Khar

Bulletin of the Atomic Dorothy Scientists, watching this, sigh and move the clock hands to fifty-five seconds to midnight

Rob McBobson

Aaand just like that, my previously posted guess that Joyce and Dorothy told "your... FRIEND" about the bowling off-panel is proven correct! Glory unto me!

Astariel

So they did get in touch with Sal/Alice, though we're still being coy about who exactly it is. Poor Dorothy. Her incompetence is very funny.

LupinThe8th

I think Asma doesn't know her name, hence describing her instead of naming her in the first place. So she won't know it's wrong.

Kelly (they-them)

You know, I thought Dorothy was being internally ableist when she vehemently denied being autistic, but now I'm seeing how neurotypical she is. Edit: She is as neurotypical as she is good at bowling. Dorothy is nailing this hanging out with friends and having fun thing.

Railway Series Book Club

because i'm terminally autistic my first thought seeing dorothy's dialogue aiming her bowling ball for the Optimal Destructive Angle made me think "oh i bet she'd love playing b-daman"

Lazuli

oh dear

Lazuli

the fred flintstone method?

Joe Belfeuil

Dorothy has adopted the Marge Simpson technique of bowling.

IAmDeltaS

Dorothy is so me when bowling

Gale Tazzin

oh my gosh we found something that dorothy is bad at? it only took 16 years wow

HenryVolt

Books smarts is not the same as actual experience was the lesson here Dorothy and you failed... Also this build up to the moment if Asma being disappointed that they got the wrong person is made worse when Joyce could have gotten Alice super easy since they're Facebook and she actually did turn out for her once.

Dan Rabin

1. Not only does Dorothy utterly botch her delivery, but she's also about to step over the foul line. But I'm a read-more-books person myself, so I can relate. 2. I should stop accusing strips like this of being two half-strips when they're really two-topic strips. The friend-for-Asma thing has to be checked in on, but that's accomplished in two panels, and then it's on to the Dorothy slapstick, which is nicely done with repeating-similar trio panels plus a skinny solo punch-panel. 3. Asma snarked about being friends with Joyce and Dorothy, but puts the emphasis on "friend" as she anticipates meeting probably-not-Alice-but-we-won't-know-until-Joyce-enters-her-name-at-the-earliest. 4. If it's Sal, Asma will recognize her from her months of Center Desk duty.

Vivian

I hope Sal brings Danny

Crunchos cereal

Now I think it won’t be so simple that Asma thought of Alice and Joyce of Sal. I can just see Asma getting annoyed and walking away if Sal comes in, and that’s really not fun enough.

Kelly (they-them)

It would be wild if they actually did invite Alice. Ooh, or if Alice just. Happened to be there

tifani

Okay I do have to ask are Dorothy and Joyce actually trying to set up Sal with Asma from their pov? Sal who they know has a boyfriend? And is straight? Or are they actually oblivious. Because if I’m Sal and I just left an entire conversation about these two getting together through cheating (and one of the guys cheated on was my brother) this would be an extremely fucked up situation to walk into.

Lazuli

16 years? that cant be ri- [looking at the date the comic started] im gonna go into the sea now. im old as fuck.

Harold

@Gale Tazzin: Well, she's also bad at convincing people she doesn't have cop energy

tifani

I don’t think she was planning to invite Danny and given what just went down I don’t think she’d think bringing him was a good idea but considering what just went down and that this is essentially Sal being set up I think I would like him to have come with her more than anything.

Kelly (they-them)

I didn't notice Dorothy was stepping over the fault line. Good catch. I wouldn't assume Asma knows Sal's name just from her desk duties. There's that bonus strip where Walky tries to tease her about not knowing his name, and she asks him what HER name is. She did know him my by his room number, tho, actually.

Maude Reads Things

I don't know if they intend to 'set her up' that way but I do think they thought Asma referred to Sal, yes.

Maude Reads Things

Reading about it doesn't actually help your wrist stay in the correct position, Dorothy! I was in a bowling league for several years and it's a bitch and a half

Harold

"This is not 'Nam, Dorothy - this is bowling! There are *rules*!"

jafortee

“I understand it now” *free throws bowling ball*

Tessea

The sound effects are already playing in my head.

Tessea

Joyce is technically a Boots & Leather Jacket Friend now, too!

C

I don't think they're trying to hook up Sal with Asma. Asma asked about someone they assumed Sal was, and decided to go bowling like Asma suggested since they were trying to find a group activity they could enjoy together. It's going to be quite the mess if this implodes in just the right way. Like, say, Sal assuming that WAS Joyce and Dorothy's intent, impugning their character, then dropping the Joe reveal on Dorothy in the middle of things. ...I'd prefer a happier result, but oh boy, could things get far messier.

Sajuuk-Khar

Horrid thought: Joyce just goes into another room, comes out as Julia Grey, starts rizzing up Asma Worse thought: it *works* on Asma The worst thought: Joyce Sapphic Harem Arc (And Joe Is There)

Sajuuk-Khar

Dorothy is also terrible at romance! And separating work from life! And politics!

Packy Anderson

@Lazuli: it's cute how you think you're as old as fuck. Even though it's 16 years, for some of us, this is still the NEW comic.

ArdieBea

Yes. And also, not knowing her name is why she wants to surreptitiously check?

5099 5618 v2.0

@S-K Joyce (voiceover): "Yup, that's me! You're probably wondering how I ended up in this situation"

5099 5618 v2.0

"Do not try and roll the ball -- that's impossible. Instead, only try to realize the truth: there *is* no ball..." -Dorothy's inner monologue, probably

5099 5618 v2.0

@tifani I don't think they're working with what anyone would recognize as a "plan", really. But I'm pretty sure they think she wanted to meet Sal, who likely processes as one of the two coolest people they know. I am legit not sure if they know who Alice *is*.

5099 5618 v2.0

@Packy Jackson Welp, thanks for bringing that up. (Full disclosure: I found an old binder with printed out pages of Danny's graduation in the original Roomies run, recently. The guy who is, in this incarnation, Ruth's little brother ended up going to a nearby con and [ (sleeping with) | (waking up in bed next to) ] Kate Mulgrew, somehow. Said binder also had a couple printouts of a few "The Parking Lot Is Full" pages, fwiw)

Tessea

*dies* :D

Tessea

Aww. I thought Dorothy was poking herself in the forehead. That's a hilarious mental image to me. I was bowling with my best friend and just as she went to throw I dropped a line from her favorite show at the time. The ball ended up in the gutter of the next lane over.

Zesstra

As much as I've been like "they're totally inviting Sal aren't they" I can also imagine now that Joyce's Lesbian Love Sleuth (the lesbian modifies love *and* is a statement of identity now) powers have evolved and she could pick up what Asma was putting down re her attraction to Alice.

Joe360

How is she neurotypical in that strip?

5099 5618 v2.0

@Tessea Took another look at her throw, and I'm just not sure how she didn't break her wrist doing it like that.

Genevieve

@5099 Joyce certainly does since she was helping Billie reconcile with her

Kelly (they-them)

She is not neurotypical at all in this strip. I was being sarcastic.

Zesstra

ASMA STATS Asma has now appeared in as many strips (main comic, not counting bonus strips, Pornographiques, or anything else) from 15:4 (The Only Exception) onwards as she did in the rest of the strip up to that point with 20 appearances before 15:4 and 20 since. In those 20 strips before 15:4 she spoke in 40% of those appearances. Since then, she's spoken in 80% of her appearances, bringing her average total speaking rate up to exactly 60% for the first time since Removed (3:4, 2013-09-02). I'm now keeping an eye on her average words spoken to date as well, which bottomed out at 8.3 with Repair (13:2, 2023-02-04), her last pre-15:4 appearance. It's currently 15.5, nearly doubling, and I'll keep an eye out for any interesting changes.

darklion

That sound you hear is Dorothy looking for her last brain cell

Dan Rabin

Dorothy formerly only let herself be seen doing things she's really good at, so it seems strange to us to see her so incompetent at something. But her loosening up may go along with her new relationship as well as her shedding of her former ambition.

Empress of Robots

Dorothy needs to stop enabling the bi disaster stereotype!

thejeff

Of course she wants to hang out with Sal. Everyone does.

Andrea Andrew

More than likely, Alice (and Billie) will be there.

Railway Series Book Club

reposting that one tumblr post thats like "yeah i'm hoping for a poly joyce outcome, i hope she sleeps with more women"

Sajuuk-Khar

IT’S BIPHOBIA, I TELL YOU!!!

Amós Batista

Experience is still better than pure knowledge.

5099 5618 v2.0

"You rolled a 9. Time to Eat The Stick (TM)" --Dorothys inner monologue after the last panel, probably

DramaQueen

Someone could have taken her in hand and SHOWED her how to do a basic bowl. Or at least let her watch a couple! Surely Joyce would have enjoyed wrapping an arm around her to guide the ball.

DramaQueen

But why her friends didn’t even bother to show her how it’s done is baffling. Joyce has just been told she has never bowled.
