MESS MESS MESS

HenryVolt

Pissed but patient...that's almost a t-shirt worthy slogan, I should workshop it.

Bronxden

Ah messy about to come to the scenes

Fart Captor

Joyce desperately trying to remember who Danny is but he's too Dorothy-adjacent so she just ends up thinking about Dorothy and never figuring it out 😔

Peach Reaver

"Oh darn, I wish I remembered who this random guy is that is pissed at me": Joyce probably

Harold

Love Sal's eyes rolling up into her hair in panel 5. Also, I hope Asma remembers to give the shoes back.

Harold

@Bronxden: For a minute I misread "Ah" as you trying to write in Sal-speak, and was trying to parse the sentence accordingly

Andrea Andrew

Did Sal become a cyclops in the last panel?

Patrick Duke

Even money that Asma owns her own shoes.

Jayne Lindgren

Well, it ain't really any of Danny's business, is it Sal? I'm a little tired of increasingly unrelated people feeling like they deserve a reaction to Dorothy and Joyce. I'm curious as to what Asma *does* think is happening here. Obviously, she was hoping to see Alice. But this feels less like she's upset at the mix-up, and more like disillusionment with whatever she was wanting at all. Religious issues with her clear attraction to another woman? That she momentarily set aside, but has "could me to her senses"? And/or perhaps feeling a little guilty for using J&D's desperation to be friends with her when she clearly doesn't really want to be friends with them at all. (Which she's allowed, but then maybe don't agree to go bowling together)

Crunchos cereal

Well, yeah, it was a not that funny sitcom shenanigan. But not everything needs to be funny. It can still turn out to be funny in the subsequent strips, though.

C

In their defense Asma, you never gave them the name of who you wanted to come, since even you didn't know Alice's name, and the very vague description you did give could work with Sal in terms of her casual look/clothing choices.

Logibear

Have we suddenly morphed into an adaptation of they Odyssey? After avoiding the confrontation with Joe "Poly-phemous" Rosenthal. The lovers from Lesbos (taking the place of Odysseus) now need to make their way home from the Bowling Alley without further incurring Danny's "Po-Bi-den"s" wrath.

tifani

“Friendships ended with Danny and Walky. Now Asma is our…oh. Nevermind.”

Logibear

Also Sal's a cyclops... its more akin to The Warriors as an adaptation

Dan Rabin

I've noticed that Willis doesn't necessarily steer clear of sitcom tropes, but he likes to make them work out differently. In this case, we get a character-compatible reaction from Asma that's not short-term fixable by Dorothy and Joyce, and Sal immediately reminds them of other reactions to their relationship that aren't short-term fixable. This doesn't mean that a different, funny, thing can happen—it just means that David Willis, like a cat, likes to play with his clichés before he kills them.

Dan Rabin

Any/all? We don't know her very well, but it seems like she's new at this and hasn't internalized the inherent mishap ratio.

Dan Rabin

Yes. She's going to start every sentence with "arrr" from now on.

Dan Rabin

My assumption as well.

Logibear

I mean... one of them is his ex. If my ex had been part of what I believed to be cheating in public with the partner of my best friend I'd be pretty pissed at them too... However Danny doesn't have luxury of complete information like we do.

Kelly (they-them)

Joyce if she had more lines: Panel 3: who?? Panel 5: good >:)

Kelly (they-them)

I'm just noticing the IU symbol on the walls. Indiana University has a bowling alley?? Wow

Dmitri0240

Plus the fact that Sal is actually their friend, which is the other part of Asma's description.

C

In Asma's defense, given how familiar Alice was talking about the whole scenario, it may have made her seem closer to events than she really was.

Michael Schmidt

My first bowling experiences were at a bowling alley in the Student Center at Colorado State University, in the early 1970s.

Dan Rabin

I think she realizes this now after Joyce's speech yesterday, and she's blaming herself a lot. She can still contrive to meet Alice, but it's just going to be a bit harder than talking to people she already knows without opening up about her real objective.

Zesstra

Po-bi-Dan, surely?

GundamBradley

I think Joyce has literally called Alice a friend before, but she's also interacted with her a fair bit more than Dorothy has. Obviously, Sal is a far closer friend.

Kelly (they-them)

My first bowling experiences were at Elmar Bowling. I remember it for smelling like cigarettes and the other little kid I'd play with there in between games. I cannot recall her name

GundamBradley

I mean, Joyce cheated on his best friend, and Dorothy is someone who he both would expect to know better and who even specifically came to him for advice about being bi, which specifically involved Danny saying that cheating was not some given of bisexuality. It would be much weirder if he wasn't kind of pissed at them.

Michael Schmidt

or stage right, if my understanding of theater lingo is correct.

Logibear

Fuck. Missed it.

GundamBradley

I guess here are those consequences some of the comment section were foaming at the mouth waiting for. I figure Walky isn't pleased, but I am unsure if I'd characterize him as being angry so far. I think he's been more irritated at people trying to guide his relationship decisions than anything else, which, I guess these two have repeatedly been guilty of, so yeah, maybe he is kind of upset with them.

darklion

Superpissed is some kinda bandname

Calder Johnson

I mean, there are plenty of times I can be pissed at someone's behavior when it doesn't directly affect me - maybe it affects other people I care about, or maybe it's just really upsetting at a conceptual level. It doesn't necessarily mean those feelings are valid or correct, but I hesitate to say that those feelings should just not be happening at all ever. The flip side of that is the rabid paladins yelling that no one (in the strip or otherwise) should ever be allowed to feel happy about Joyorthy happening.

Sajuuk-Khar

“Li’l bastard got mah fuckin’ roller derby teammate up his bunk, though, so lmao it ain’t that serious.”

5099 5618 v2.0

@Logibear Would that make this a Ulysses reference? Because I can definitely imagine Joyce doing a Molly Bloom monologue [1] _____ [1] - "...and then I asked him with my eyes to ask again yes and then [she] asked me would I yes to say yes my mountain flower and first I put my arms around [her] yes and drew [her] down to me so [she] could feel my breasts all perfume yes and his heart was going like mad and yes I said yes I will Yes."

Tessea

Oh damn. I feel bad for Asma, she probably feels humiliated for even getting her hopes up. Awkward for everyone else. Except maybe Sal who's likely still confused why she's here.

Lazuli

this made me think. has danny made friends outside this group of fucked up messes

5099 5618 v2.0

Another natural 1, ladies. Care to roll again?

Tessea

I'm honestly thinking Asma's suffering from some sort of depression and is struggling with loneliness and being very introverted.

5099 5618 v2.0

@Tessea I suspect some kind of incoming turn, tho. Maybe Billifer and Alice show up because this is just an objectively good time to go bowling. Or maybe because she wants to pass Sal back "her" costume from before?

5099 5618 v2.0

@GundamBradley Well, he did light that skull on fire. Hasn't thrown it yet, tho.

Tessea

I hope so. There's no way the story thread is just here to depress Asma.

Rob McBobson

See, this kind of reaction from Asma? That's what made me feel, yesterday (and today, too) that there's something here we're not seeing.

Astariel

If Dorothy and Joyce had thought bubbles in panel 4: Dorothy: "Of course Danny's angry. We've acted terribly. I'm the worst." Joyce: "Who?"

NinjaZaku

I was expecting more shenanigans

Rubia

I'm glad the final punchline is Sal being Sal towards Walky. Joyce's over the top taunting him still ticks me off, so more of her dunking on him would have soured this strip for me.

CoreyWW

(Long pause) Dorothy: “I’m not sure if I like bouling…”

joe mcguire

What I’m still not clear on and assume will be made clearer as the story unfolds, is if this reaction from Asma is tied to her religion or more just her general vibe of “don’t be distracted from your goals” is this more a “i shouldn’t have put myself in a situation where I’d be tempted to make out with a woman as that’s against my faith” or is it “I shouldn’t have put myself in a position where I’d be tempted to enjoy myself as I have so many goals and challenges that necessitate my full attention.” It could even be both, I’m just super curious.

DramaQueen

She’s giving me strong Dorothy vibes here, the pre-break through Dorothy still trying to repress her feelings and spend all of her time either studying or exercising.

DramaQueen

Her reaction is pretty rude for sure. She’s using them to meet some girl she is attracted to and bugs out instantly as soon as it’s clear they misunderstood which girl she was talking about. She could have gritted her teeth and played along to finish the round like most people would, even Radha or Billie. She’s having some kind of breakdown or serious issue; I’m intrigued.

Empress of Robots

Nooooooooooooo. Not my DoA Bowling Yuri!!!! COME BACK!

Harold

Still holding out hope that as Asma is rushing out she bumps into Daisy. Daisy recognizes her as Bolt Cutter Woman, and starts the process of redeeming the previous protest coverage by arranging an anonymous interview with one of the real unsung heroes. And then they make out

Harold

@darklion: The list of rotating opening acts for The Straights and Jennifer just keeps growing

Harold

Dorothy: "Joyce - DANNY! The guy I dated all through high school! Your ex-boyfriend's lifelong friend and fucking ROOMMATE!" Joyce: "OH! Hat Guy, right? Also, about that 'ex-boyfriend' thing..."

Harold

"It'll do until the mess gets here"

Crunchos cereal

I agree, Willis uses tropes well and in unexpected ways. I think this sequence will work better when read after it's complete than reading just one strip a day.

Dmitri0240

Asma's response to Joyce and Dorothy's ill-conceived apology is definitely easy to interpret as "closeted women is unsure of how to handle the situation and ends up giving two strangers a version of the lecture she tells herself in the mirror".

Dmitri0240

@DramaQueen She probably has a sympathetic reason for the crash out. Thankfully, as her name isn't Joyce or Dorothy, the fans are likely to hear her out before denouncing her as an inhuman monster who deserves to be a permanent social pariah. My money's on: Asma is pretty deeply closeted and made a rash decision to hang out with two dopes and her crush because they asked for it and she assumed it wouldn't have to be a big deal. But when the woman she actually described shows up instead of the woman Joyce and Dorothy barely know, she realized she was going to be expected to explain herself and isn't ready to be accidentally outed by three strangers.

Jayne Lindgren

Yes! At least it did in the Student Union when I attended around 2010. I actually took bowling as an elective, haha.

Dmitri0240

They succeeded in getting the coolest person they know to show up for a dorky activity, all while actively annoyed at them for pissing off her boyfriend. If anyone failed a skill check, it's Asma for completely botching the description. She asked for Joyce and Dorothy's friend, not some random women they've met like one time and who explicitly claimed to not know Joyce and Dorothy literally in front of Asma.

Maude Reads Things

I'm pretty sure it's 'goddammit, I agreed to hang out with these girls I don't particularly like so I could see the Hot Girl and they brought me the WRONG Hot Girl so now I wasted my time'

Maude Reads Things

Oh. Right. Sad sibling. Sal has a sisterly duty here

Sajuuk-Khar

Harold. Please. It’s JENNY JENNY JENNY AND THE STRAAAAAAAAIIIIIIGHTS

Dmitri0240

@BBPC but if it was as simple as that, someone with any degree of social understanding would just stick it out through an awkward night. That she stormed out and caused a scene suggests, at least to me, that there was an element of shame involved that goes deeper than “I asked for a different woman”.

alphanor

What happened to Sal's eyes in the last panel?

Maude Reads Things

I'm reading less shame and more annoyance but if it is shame it could be from associating with Dorothy and Joyce over derailing the protest
