THERE MIGHT HAVE BEEN A GLANCE, IT MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE BEEN MEANINGFUL BUT IT HAS BECOME RETROACTIVELY MEANINGFUL

E

IU has bowling lanes? Is this what large state universities are like? My college was D3 and they practically had to bribe people to come to any sports events.

Andrea Andrew

Happy valentines Day to these two.

C

Chill a bit Joyce, just enjoy the moment, lol.

Omnithea

We're all stories in the end.

Astariel

Stories are fun, Dorothy! Relax.

David M Willis

IU has this specific bowling alley inside their student union building. I took photos of it when I was there last year!

Harold

Joyce: "AND THERE UPON A RAINBOW, IS THE ANSWER TO A NEV--" Dorothy: "Please stop"

Ria

It's so cool how they started fuckin yesterday and they've already been married for 15 years

tifani

Thank you Dorothy. Joyce’s attempts to build this up into some kind of pre ordained love story where Dorothy has to be her one true love has been really annoying. It’s also something I tend to dislike in fiction in general. First of all I don’t think any ship in this comic is “safe” or “endgame.” But I also think writing stories like that is how you end up with things like the himym series finale.

Kelly (they-them)

I would be giving Dorothy SO much sass right now if I were Joyce. Like, oh no, how silly of me to love you so much to weave narratives about it. Sorry to be invested in the story of us. Guess I'll toss this essay about the light in your eyes brightening my soul into the trash

tifani

I think Joyce’s insistence on this relationship having to be the be all end all has a lot to do with her coping. Like she already said she threw away so much to have it so it has to be worth it.

Sajuuk-Khar

Joyce: DOOMED by the narrative? I think NOT! We are QUEENS of the narrative! Beautiful as the dawn! Treacherous as the sea! Stronger than the foundations of the earth!!! Dorothy: there’s no narrative!!!! D8 Joyce: ALL SHALL LOVE US AND DESPAIR

tifani

I just keep thinking about how hard Joyce is pushing this as them being each other’s one true forever love when the whole “haven’t broken up with Joe” thing is just lingering in the background.

tifani

She’s sooo monogamous. She’s the most monogamous. (If she keeps saying it over and over it becomes true). I just cannot take this seriously. She is laying it on way too thick.

Harold

@tifani: Or, as one writer memorably retitled it at the time, HOW I SETTLED FOR YOUR MOTHER AND THEN WAITED FOR HER TO DIE SO I COULD BANG YOUR AUNT ROBIN

Packy Anderson

Dorothy is unaware that she's a character in a webcomic.

tifani

Honestly I saw it as Ted and Robin settling for each other after losing the people they SHOULD have stayed with. The whole thing was so fucking depressing. And it absolutely killed love at first sight endgame love stories for me forever.

tifani

The whole idea of soulmates becomes kind of horrifying when you look at it in the way himym set it up. Think about it: Ted and Robin meet, break up, fall in love with other people but because the gods of their universe (the himym showrunners) could not let go of the ending they filmed nine years before all their character development and those actual meaningful relationships were thrown out and they were forced back together.

Girlycore

It's not a kind of love that's for everyone. And Dorothy has a bad habit of trying to solve Joyce like a puzzle, which has occasionally included trying to mute/soften the impact of Joyce's autistic hyperfixations. Like the one she has on Dorothy right now. Personal Theory: Dorothy is also autistic, but has "learned to be normal" and thinks it's both a good idea and literally that easy for everyone so Joyce gives her a bit of contact-embarrassment the way a lot of "I'm one of the good ones" types get around nonmasking/noncloseted sorts.

Jesse

In this world, is the destiny of mankind controlled by some transcendental entity or law? Is it like the hand of God hovering above? At least it is true that man has no control, even over his own will.

Tessea

"I'm trying to frame it how it will be written in your presidential memoirs!"

Lazuli

that mindset is likely gonna blow up in her face if she continues. reality is still happening, regardless of how entrenched she is in the fantasy.

Sajuuk-Khar

Joyce, no, JOYCE PUT DOWN THE CRIMSON BEHELIT

Empress of Robots

“Joyce. Our life is not a story!” “Yeah. Remember how it was 2010 5 months ago but it’s 2026 now?” “Whaaaa….noooo….that can’t be right?”

thejeff

Whereas I'd be stressed and worried if I was Dorothy. Do I have to lie about my feelings and when they developed to match this story she's making up? Is she going to think I don't love her if I don't say it was at first sight?

Recommendation for Joyce: when you start feeling like this, build a playlist or several.

David M Willis

but the only songs she knows are either christian or the songs dorothy already made a playlist of!!!!

Andrea Andrew

Maybe some Beatles, Queen, Madonna, and Michael Jackson will help navigate her romantic feelings.

Andrea Andrew

That’s an interesting read. The idea that she wants to share love with more than one, but still can’t break the stereotypes of true monogamous love. It might take more than Joe.

Andrea Andrew

By blowing up in her face, you mean she recognizes how unhealthy this approach is for her and her friends, right?

tifani

I’m not a swiftie but I feel like Taylor is just waiting to rewire Joyce.

tifani

Joyce’s “happiness” has felt performative to me for awhile now and this whole comic feels like evidence to add to that. When she stops editing herself to make this fit she’ll feel real to me again.

tifani

This whole thing has been dragged on so long that the story just doesn’t make sense if Joyce is not just monogamous but capable of making the choice to be in a monogamous relationship. Some poly people are after all. Joe was. But based on what we’ve been shown of Joyce with her inability to resist Dorothy and her unwillingness to drop Joe (because she absolutely could have and actively has not). I don’t think Joyce is at least not now at least not when it comes to these two people she wants. But that goes against everything she has ever believed love to be. So she’s fighting it hard with a Stepford smile.

@tifani Lest we forget: true epiphanies are usually quite painful. From what I recall, Mohammed described communicating with deity as feeling like being crushed, for instance. As for what happens when epiphanies are either ignored or learning does not take place, Flannery O'Connor has quite a lot to say about that [1]. For a less intense example, the diff between false and true epiphanies is called out in the movie Shortbus in the beginning of the movie, then the more [ meaningful | costly | intense ] one happens towards the end. There's also Talia & Bruce escaping Bane's pit prison in the Dark Knight Rises, as a more recent person example. IMHO, she's got to work up to it if she's to have any hope of recovering from getting hard-rebooted and upgraded by the narrative. If she were to go right now she'd probably irreparably injure herself. _____________ [1] - It does *not* go well. Often, people die.

Lea

@TheJeff: I understand your concern in principle. But we literally saw Joyce process Dorothy's pushback and pivot her narrative to something that incorporated Dorothy's feelings. I don't see any need here for Dorothy to lie about her feelings to match the story. I see Dorothy being against Joyce weaving a story about her feelings at all.

Lea

It kind of literally IS a story. =D

Lea

I nearly chose my college (3000 miles away) based purely on their possession of a student ice skating rink. Instead, went to college 4 miles away, in a desert with NO skating rinks.

The nature of fundies is to turn everything into a story with sides and a moral, because those were the stories they heard growing up. There's nothing inherently wrong with telling stories about ourselves, because they give us reasons. The reasons are things we compare with our values to decide if our course is the right one. Joyce, however, is casting herself into the Biblical hero's role, and those people were either demonstrating a moral, or made an example of. So if she's not to be the example (usually not a good end,) she has to be the demonstrator. She's already decided that she's right, and that's the fundie trap in a nutshell.
