Carol Carol...steal first, THEN burn!

Joe360

By giving them money...

Sajuuk-Khar

May she remain as effective as she is forever, amen and fuck off Carol

Astariel

That's hilarious.

Patrick Duke

That silent beat panel: such a great face. I love it.

Andrea Andrew

Wow. I’d say it’s impossible a bigot like Carol would have two amazing queer daughters, but considering my experience, and Vivian Musk being a thing, it’s not impossible.

Andrea Andrew

What about Charlie? Should Joss kiss her too?

Lazuli

something something two nickels

Logibear

"Oh, you know that person who I know is at this school whose family I just name dropped in the hope that you might know them" - Jocelyne, I love you. But this ain't it.

Andrea Andrew

Good to see Jocelyn isn’t jealous of Carla getting puberty blockers when she couldn’t.

KiasyonSFM

love how Jocelyn also gains the same background as Dorothy at the end.

C

Oh Carol...change for the better. But that is a funny way to accidentally support your boycott target.

VengeanceKnight

Ah yes, the “Beatles record burning” method of boycotting. Historically quite effective.

Abibeur

I must say "Jocelyne discovers how much every students in the university know each other to some degree because of random bullshit" is a very fun and satisfying moment

Maude Reads Things

I mean, the single room is also probably to avoid any potential issues with roommates too, Dorothy. The school does not want to enter that potential quagmire. Imagine if she'd roomed with someone like Mary or even just a run of the mill vindictive asshat.

Harold

"YOU get a polycule! And YOU get a polycule! Fuck it, EVERYONE gets a polycule. Everyone IS a polycule!"

Tessea

........ I didn't think anything Joyce's mom did could surprise me at this point. Well played.

Andrea Andrew

Carla shouldn’t room with boys, but even her privilege may not allow her to room with other girls.

Lazuli

....that was actually a thing?!?

Amós Batista

that's too much, I know, but somehow, last panel, Jocelyne looks older. Almost almost like.... her mom?

Dan Rabin

Borderless panels don't usually have backgrounds in David Willis's visual language.

Steph

I just love this comic so much.

Tessea

I always figured Carla had a single room because she's trans. Privacy concerns, possible bad allegations from the wrong roommate, etc. But money likely streamlines that sort of thing as well.

Sajuuk-Khar

Jocelyne in an Ada Wong RE4R fit all “Brown. Joss Brown”, seducing targets for the sake of a better tomorrow (and also hot Slipshine action)

Abibeur

"Mmmh... And what about the grandson of the infamous Park family? Maybe he could have the means to-" "Oh yeah him! He was the one who ratted out my ex's twin sister when she was holding up a convenience store, making after that my room neighbour stab her. Fun fact the latter was also my ex's ex-girlfriend. Anyway, recently he became the boyfriend of the Billingsworth (yeah that one) daughter. Who's a friend of mine (obviously), she took me to karaoke with her RA ex-girlfriend like a week ago. Anyway, I think Asher (because that's his name, forgot to say that) is currently with Joyce ex-boyfriend, I think you know him. He was one of the hostages at that convenience store hold up I mentioned earlier btw, isn't that fun?" "Oh okay"

Tessea

I think that's just the pattern on the wall behind them. :)

SmurfJuice

Dorms! Just like a small town, where everyone knows each other, and the brave and cynical few nobly endure scandals, the chaos of vigilantism and mob justice, personal tragedies, and horrifying revelations - all in service to one end. That is, the keeping in line and alive of everyone, via the magic of friendship, questionably legitimate death threats, and ladyboners. So many ladyboners. That's how small towns operate, right :D?

Tessea

And it was just as intelligent as those recent buy stuff just to destroy it protests against Bud Light and.... some shoe brand, I think it was.

Packy Anderson

This revelation does not surprise me in the least. This is just like all the idiots buying Bud Lite so they could shoot it up, or burning their expensive sneakers because they were mad at Nike.

Packy Anderson

This is, of course, in contrast to The Rutles: ❝In the summer of 1966, Ron Nasty was widely quoted by saying that the Rutles were bigger than God. He went on to say that God had never gotten a hit record. In response to this, many fans burnt their albums, many more burnt their fingers trying to burn their albums. Album sales skyrocketed, as people began to buy the albums, simply to burn them. It would later turn out that it was all a great misunderstanding. Nasty, whilst talking to a slightly deaf journalist, stated that the Rutles were bigger than Rod Stewart, who would not be big for another eight years.❞

Astariel

Interesting that Carol burned all those magazines and Joyce still had no idea that Carla was trans. I wonder how old she was when that happened.

Simon Magid

Reminds me of a webcomic in which a succubus working in a bookstore sold a pastor a fuckton of Harry Potter books with 10% off so he could burn them. And promised him the same discount on other books he wanted to burn.

Pangab

I don’t understand what’s wrong with what she’s doing?

Pangab

In my college experience Trans people would want singles to avoid any issues but only money could make it happen. If your roommate would harass you the school would shrug its shoulders. Most would end up couch surfing with another queer person who had a place.

Lazuli

do you have a link?

Lazuli

thats just a fucking waste of money

Empress of Robots

Oh poor, sweet, naive Dorothy. I don’t think Carla has a single because her parents are rich.

Harold

It's canon that Carla was once on the cover of NEWSWEEK.

Harold

@Astariel: Carol most likely bought up and burned all the copies of NEWSWEEK in the immediate area specifically so that her kids wouldn't see something that "normalized" trans people.

VengeanceKnight

Was Dorothy’s karaoke excursion only a week ago?!?! Holy shit, time in this universe moves slower than… IDK something that’s funny because of how slow it moves but not a snail or turtle because those are boring stock answers.

Abibeur

A week ago or even less, something like that lmao. Graduation will be in 2070...

Harold

Karaoke was a week ago last Sunday, followed by DRANKS! last Monday and the Not-A-Keg party on Tuesday. It is now the following Tuesday.

Harold

@SmurfJuice: It's like MONSTERS, INC., but instead of children's screams the grid is powered by ladyboners

Seth Aaron Hershman has they/she pronouns

i mean. booster hasn't got a single i assumed carla's parents paid extra to make it so carla doesn't have to deal with a potentially transphobic stranger in her space

Empress of Robots

True, but trans women are often treated differently (read as: way worse) than nonbinary people particularly if that nonbinary person has no issue being in facilities that correspond with their assigned at birth sex. Just look at the state of literally every anti-trans legal action in both the US and UK and over 98% of them deal with trans women being treated as girls/women while nonbinary people and trans man are all but ignored. But in any case, even Booster had to transfer rooms to become Walky's roommate after having undisclosed issues with their prior roommate (which I always read as their old roommate harassed them).

Empress of Robots

Also: I am almost certain that there was an old strip that explicitly stated the reason for Carla's single was it was a settlement to a lawsuit after she sued the university to be permitted to stay in the girls' dorm. You can say the lawsuit is evidence of her parents' wealth, but if her parents weren't wealthy, it's very likely the ACLU, HRC or TLC would have taken that case and gotten the same result.

Zesstra

Re Booster's prior roomie dumbingofage.com/booster Literally their first appearance they say that their last roommate not respecting their identity was the issue.

Astariel

Doesn't seem like these people usually try to hide what they hate from their kids. Certainly the Brown parents have openly supported homophobia even in front of their kids.

Simon Magid

I am sorry, no. This was like twenty years ago. I am not even sure of the title of the comic anymore.
