Ooooohhhh Jocelyne is gonna piss off a LOOOOT of commenters!!! Imma get the popcorn :3

C

"I mean, look at the statistics...girlfriends come in many non-Dorothy names...boyfriend's just more broad a term."

Astariel

You tell her, Jocelyne!

Railway Series Book Club

learning so much about Jocelyne tonight and loving all of it not only does she have a sordid string of ex-boyfriends but she thinks Dorothy is a snack? "Dorothy fucks Jocelyne in a tent" wasn't far off after all???

Simon Magid

It was Hobie all along! He's behind everything!

Logibear

"Your gender identity is getting in the water and turning all the Joyce's gay" - Sarah probably

Dan Rabin

Who is Joyce's big sister? Who is Joyce's lover? Who is Joyce's best friend? Is it more of a trope or a trend—or maybe a tradition? Compare with: who is Becky's lesbian mother? There are more -ships in this dense writing than just the relation- ones.

Railway Series Book Club

the commentariat's favorite passtime: firing the transmisogny cannon at a trans woman who's swag they can't handle

Joyce Brown: Lesbian Love Sleuth and Dorothy-Snagger

Maude Reads Things

I wouldn't say instrumental but we'll see how long it plays out with Dorothy and Joyce if this other shoe with Joe continues to dangle

KittyKai

I MEANT JOCELYN ADGIKBFYJ

KiasyonSFM

Always hate how men get reduced to things when it comes to same sex relationships with women. Joe and Walky are not lessser than Dorothy and they didn't deserve to get cheated on.

Nicholas A. Jalowick

Quite clearly, the Brown girls have a type. Freckles seem to factor into it :}

Corronchilejano

I'm surprised by the lack of surprise by Jocelyne for Sara calling herself the big sister too.

Harold

@BBCC: Right now I’m more interested in what might be the other shoe with *Jocelyne*

Logibear

"Explain to me what a Dorothy is because I don't get it?" "A service bottom that writes up your day plans for you"

Harold

I suspect Jocelyne knows that Joyce has always wanted a big sister. Now she has two!

Andrea Andrew

Did Sarah go Alex Jones on Jocelyn?

LupinThe8th

Not enough for Becky's tastes!

Kelly (they-them)

I think Jocelyne is on board for DoJoJo; she and Joe had that nice heart to heart

Andrea Andrew

Jocelyn wants to find a woman like Dorothy. Someday, maybe.

Mark

Now it modifies both words!

Andrea Andrew

Lesbians and pan/bi women have more big os than straight women. There might be a reason for that.

LupinThe8th

Jocelyne did say that she's starting to like girls due to hormonal shifts. Apparently "attraction to Dorothy" is just a natural side effect of being a Brown girl.

Logibear

Now we just need an audience surrogate for the Synthesis Ending.

Logibear

I think so too. It does feel odd how dismissive she is of him here though.

KiasyonSFM

I am a Bi woman and communication is what gets you the O's.

Fart Captor

SHE WAS AND SHE WAS RIGHT TO DO SO, SARAH

Fart Captor

Oh the poor men. I can't imagine what that must be like

Amós Batista

I agree with the cheating thing but, the "reduce to thing" thing... I believe it's a women issue, I'm right?

Amós Batista

Last panel: Jocelyne is Joyce's sister. But in last panel, she's Joyce's clone

KiasyonSFM

"Boyfriends come and go but you only get one shot at Dorothy" frames Joe as a thing to abandon while Dorothy is a person worthy of Joyce.

Tessea

Awww, Jocelyn adores Dorothy for Joyce! I'd be super confused about the 'one afternoon' thing if I hadn't realized that it's only been 4 _maybe_ 5 days since Joyce found out about Jocelyn AT ALL. And those strips were from late 2024!! I wonder if Comic Time is slower or faster than Valve Time. Also, this IS going better than the Carla conversation, but don't blame Jocelyn for Joyce not dealing properly with Joe. That's Willis' fault!

Tessea

True. But she probably has some tunnel-vision traits shared with Joyce and is just focused on the new and now. Which could also be a problem when it comes to her protesting plans.

Tessea

I choked on my drink at that. :D

Grace Serenity

Sarah. Joyce's heart belonged to Dorothy from the first day they met. Joe has gotten exponentially better as a person in the last few months, but he was never destined to be with Joyce forever. He'll be fine!

Tessea

Sarah's pushing at a line, too. But I think Kai meant Jocelyn's dismissal of Joe. Both of these girls need to stop meta meddling in Joyce's relationships. Yes, they handled things badly, but it's their mistakes to learn from and deal with the fallout.

William Lewis

Yes, that is correct. Sometimes you just have to grab the right one and let the fallout be damned.

Ali Youngman

Idk about tomorrow, but much to my chagrin everyone on Patreon seems very pro Jocelyne about the whole conversation

KittyKai

Oh no, we at Patreon Stan Joyce and Dorothy - I’m talking about the websites comments and, god forbid, REDDIT 😱😱😱 And yes for the record I also Stan Jocelyne here :3

Beck Chonigman

Jocelyn is absolutely a bad influence but it has nothing to do with her being transgender and I'm all here for it. I support women's rights AND women's wrongs.

DramaQueen

Geez girl, lighten up. She dated Joe for a couple of days. It’s not like she was married with 12 kids.

DramaQueen

He’s a nice boy and he’s handsome but Joyce was pity-dating him. He was never the object of Joyce’s obsession the way Dorothy has always been, rather Joyce was the externalification of his own goals to be a better person.

DramaQueen

Much better for everyone involved in the long run than settling for a guy they aren’t that into.

Sajuuk-Khar

Sarah, babe, I love you and it’s okay to be upset about the cheating, it *really* is, it was kind of shitty and brings up super unpleasant memories BUT you are expecting “responsible elder sister” from *the rebellious middle child*. This is buffoonery. It’s buffoon-coded.

MrShoggoth

Honestly as an only child the sibling dynamics are eldritch and mysterious to me, Sarah’s doing way better than I ever would in this situation

Jayne Lindgren

Sarah: "Joyce cheated on her boyfriend with Dorothy!" Jocelyn (Internal): BASED BASED BASED BASED BASED BASED Jocelyn: "Waow."

Rubia

I can see this being a headline on InfoWars in the next few days, now that The Onion has taken it over.

Simon Magid

Always hate how women get reduced to things when it comes to practically anything men discuss. Women are not lesser than men and they don't deserve it.

Simon Magid

@Kiayson Correction. Jocelyn said "you only get so many chances to snag *a* Dorothy." If anything Jocelyn turns both sides into things here, which I personally prefer to think of as intended if possibly failed humour. Though I can still see that some might find it offensive :/

KiasyonSFM

Bro said a whole lot of nothinggggg

Jasmijn Wellner

Joss is pro Women's Wrongs, especially if it leads to her sister scoring Dotty

Empress of Robots

Sarah has just been losing me as a fan during the entirety of this whole-ass conversation...

Empress of Robots

Also, as a reminder, Joyce dated Joe for CHARITABLY 12 days. I have had colds that have lasted longer lmao.

Em

This is gross. And the anti-Sarah comments here are disgusting, yet not surprising.

VengeanceKnight

It’s still something that required a lot of growth from Joe. Sarah spent years (our time) ragging on Joe for being a philandering sexist creep, and then had to watch in real time as Joe finally showed personal growth, took a relationship seriously, and immediately got burned for it. I imagine Sarah is feeling really shitty about how she treated Joe, and is displacing some of the frustration she feels to herself on Joyce, or at least supplementing it.

Johanne

Jocelyn hasn't seen that Joyce is still into Joe! Heck we didn't even see it until Biology class just now. She's got no way of knowing that, nor what Joe proposed. So it makes sense that she'd assume Joe is out.

joe mcguire

Okay, but your colds didn’t demonstrate remarkable devotion and you presumably didn’t abandon your colds as an after thought after making a commitment to them. Nobody’s saying she needed to stay with Joe, but the way she ended things (by which I mean things are still not explicitly ended on his end, he’s still in limbo) that’s not cool. He was not treated with much respect in this situation which i think is what Sarah is most mad about. It’s what I’m mad about, anyway. A person’s personal awakening shouldn’t come at the expense of others, and in the event that it does, one should take appropriate ownership of that.

Logibear

Not gonna lie, if a friends sibling basically told me "don't worry about it, these things happen" when I tried to bring up the topic of infidelity, I'd probably want nothing to do with them.

joe mcguire

I’ve seen a couple comments like this. What does the length of the relationship have to do with anything? He’s still a person and she still made a commitment to him. They were explicitly in a relationship and she ditched him pretty unceremoniously. She cheated on him, plain and simple. He was not treated with respect in that situation; there was a way to do this where she could be with Dorothy and not treat Joe so dismissively.

Empress of Robots

Yeah, but why the fuck would someone choose to stay with Salisbury steak drenched in A1 when a dry aged porter house was begging you to eat it (out)?🤣

Empress of Robots

Okay, Jocelyne has the ability to do the funniest thing ever right now and all she has to do is go seduce Joe

Astariel

If Joe is still in limbo, that's his own doing.

Harold

@Wednesday Sophia: Just wanted to give an appreciative shout-out to "JoceGrin." Kudos!

Jesse

Joyce caught the queer from her trans sister! (I joké)

T Campbell

The cheating debate has been had by now, so I won't weigh in there, but I will say this… Jocelyn’s “Pfft, it’s college” is 1) very much in character for someone her age (I’m guessing 25 or so); 2) not wrong; and 3) absolutely infuriating to anyone IN college. I’d compare it to an edgelord at an old folks’ home who gets online and tells everyone from age 25 to 65 they shouldn’t worry about their troubles because “Someday all you’ll have to look forward to is the peace of the grave.” Like, I’m sure Joss has had a college relationship or two that she now wishes she spent less time fretting over, but life is valid within the context in which it’s lived! Plus, the patterns you set in early life really do persist into adulthood. I do agree with others who’ve said it’s worth supporting “women’s wrongs,” and Robin’s advice to get out and “make mistakes” is good, too. But as of this strip, I’d side with Sarah AND Joyce over Jocelyn’s condescension, even though she intends it as a loving kindness. They may’ve come up with different answers to the questions on the table here, but at least they're taking the questions seriously.

Harold

@Empress of Robots: She walks into Joe's room just as Walky is doing the FUNNIEST THING EVER

Star Ringer

Man, I'm so glad everyone's extremely normal about this conversation, it's so great to see people refraining from making sweeping judgments based on seconds-long snippets of conversations that necessarily need to each be structured with individual setup and payoff due to the medium through which it's being portrayed!

NinjaZaku

Sarah, come on. Like it's okay to be upset about the cheating but implying Jocelyne had something to do with it is wild.

Gaiash

Unless you’re Walky, then you snag a Dorothy twice.

Ilana Feldman

I'm just wondering what's apparently given Jocelyne such a high opinion of Dorothy, at least going by that last panel. Might have to go back and see all their interactions again?

Jayne Lindgren

Joyce broke up with Joe. She said they couldn't be in a relationship anymore because she was with Dorothy, and meant it. JOE said that he was OK with, essentially, still being her boyfriend even if her relationship with Dorothy took priority. To which Joyce, again, said NO. And then said, "we'll talk about this more later" before rushing off. This idea that Joyce *didn't* break up with Joe is wishful thinking. They broke up! Even if they *do* get back together in some fashion (which I'm not discounting, even if I don't want it to happen!), right now they are *not* together. Dorothy and Joyce are in relationship and Joe is technically single but has indicated that he's open to resuming a relationship with Joyce under different conditions. Joe is "in limbo" because he *put himself* there by not accepting that Joyce wanted to break up, and then putting the onus on HER to decide if that's OK. I think there's a lot of people (like Sarah) who are still mad at Joyce and Dorothy for expressing their love for each other before breaking up with their then-current partners. Which, fair enough! They definitely started acting like a couple before they probably should have. But now that stuff is getting held over them, even long after they did the right thing and broke up with their boyfriends, as if every second Joyce spends *not* thinking about whether she wants to be poly with Joe is a continuance of her "cheating." And I don't think that's fair at all. Some of it is probably fueled by the people who really loved Joe/Joyce and are disappointed that it ended so abruptly (even if the writing was on the wall for awhile, Dorothy has always been Joyce's priority). And some of it is probably from people who want poly representation desperate to see it realized, and feeling hopeful after having the idea broached open. Which, again, I understand (I frankly felt the same for a long time regarding Joyce and Dorothy getting together), but there's apparently this temptation to re-write the story to make it seem more likely that I don't think matches up with what actually happend.

Empress of Robots

I agree with literally everything you've said Jayne, but one thing everyone (including me) keeps forgetting is that Joyce and Dorothy first kissed on a Saturday afternoon and it's only Tuesday morning. So TECHNICALLY it only happened like 3 days ago for Sarah. Sarah's still wrong and Jocelyne is still right though. And Dorothy and Joyce never did anything wrong!

tifani

Joe is a grade A porterhouse not some goddamned Salisbury. And Joyce wants a bite (of dat ass).

Harold

@Ilana Feldman: It might simply be "Dorothy makes Joyce happy. Whatever makes Joyce happy makes me [Jocelyne] happy."

Empress of Robots

@Joe McG - I've had moderate-to-severe asthma my entire life so I have a VERY intimate relationships with my colds that I am constantly looking to get out of despite my (crappy lungs) committing to them. And then they freaking hang around like total Beta Colds. Just simping for me to get back together with them and have some sort of poly bacterial relationship with them and whatever new fresh (hotter & better) cold my kid brought home from daycare this week. But DAMMIT. I've been in love with this new cold for 8 months and I don't care if the last cold thinks I owe them something. Wait. I think I lost the plot here?

Empress of Robots

I'll admit almost all men look like Salisbury steak to me? It's probably worse right now because it's Lesbian Visibility Week? 🤷‍♀️

tifani

You have to remember that Joyce is bisexual and wants to be the meat in a Dorothy Joe sandwich.

tifani

I can’t wait until Joyce is living her best life where she’s having threesomes all over the place with Joe and Dorothy and we can stop comparing.

Empress of Robots

Oh I remember they're both bi (Joyce & Dorothy) and there is some narrative potential for that maybe developing. But asking me to appreciate Joe is like asking someone who has a peanut allergy to make out with Mr. Peanut? Ish? I'm tired and not good at analogies today lol

Tessea

Who doesn't???

tifani

I think it’s more about the timing. She is right that events Jocelyne was involved in were integral to Joyce’s recent decisions but mistaking Joss being a bystander to it as influence. Jocelyne’s “boys come and go attitude” doesn’t help. Right now jumping to the conclusion that Joss encouraged Joyce and Dorothy’s recent decisions is a logical leap. But really I think Sarah is just trying to find a way to make Joyce’s actions not fully her fault because she doesn’t like or understand this side of Joyce (the cheating and the lack of regret or visible evidence of caring about hurting Joe) and wants someone else to be partially at fault so she can be less disappointed with Joyce.

Sajuuk-Khar

Is it a side effect of being a Brown girl specifically or is it just a Brown child thing? Because like I can super easily picture John being married to a horrible Karen-type evangelical with suspicious freckles and Dorpy hair, and if/when we ever meet Jordan and he goes “how YOU doin’” at Dorothy…

joe mcguire

I guess I don’t know why you need to be attracted to Joe to think he’s a person and needs to be treated with dignity. It’s perfectly fine that Joyce went with Dorothy, but she did it in a very hurtful way to Joe but also to Becky and Dina and Walky and even Sarah. When a person’s happiness comes at the expense of others, it behooves them to take ownership of that and I don’t think Joyce and Dorothy have appropriately done that yet. They’ve acknowledged that they have guilt but all they’ve done so far is try to show why they shouldn’t have to have any. They should have guilt, and the only way they can alleviate it and actually properly enjoy being together without that guilt is to properly apologize and take ownership of how they hurt their friends.

Dmitri0240

@joe Cheating is bad, but the notion that all cheating is equally bad is nonsensical. Cheating on your 12-year spouse because it just seemed like fun and continuing the affair indefinitely is *bad*. Cheating on your 12-day partner because you realized you were wrong about your orientation and have been romantically and sexually in-love with your best friend for pretty much your entire adult life and ending things with said partner within 12 hours is so much less bad that in a perfect world we would use a different word for it. We're talking jaywalking vs. drunk driving levels of moral distance.
