So this is the actual talk Joyce and Joe actually have in the actual comic. We are dropped into a late stage in the conversation as they return to Read Hall from biology class. Joe gets no less than *three* beat panels: first, as he and Joyce glance at each other (probably to see how the sexually-charged topic is going down), then two panels to understand that Joyce is treating the topic favorably with respect to him. Joyce has not forgotten their previous conversation (she doesn't do that), and she's delivering her message to someone she's actually comfortable with. Comfort for Joe and Joyce; discomfort for Sarah?

I genuinely think she is going to leave this conversation having agreed to poly with Joe while conveniently leaving out that Dorothy has not been asked. I don’t think she’ll mean to. It just seems like something she’d do. And honestly she could probably get away with not telling either for awhile if she wanted to. Just because Joe is okay with the idea of Joyce being with Dorothy doesn’t mean he’s going to want to hang out with her. And Dorothy will likely want to avoid Joe for as long as possible. This would obviously be a bad idea which is why I could totally see her doing it.

@packy I think that the amount of time the audience has had to wait matters more than the amount of time that has passed in comic at a certain point and we are very much there. The plot point has to move forward. With the way time works in this comic you could use the “it’s been a few days” excuse to drag anything and everything out but that is no way to pace a story.

@Packy Anderson It's a relativistic thing. The plot moves near light speed, so those being moved by it experience very little time relative to outside observers. Also, it's kind of what freshman year is like when you're a freshman. You do a lot of living in not much time, those first two semesters.

Inside of Joe there are two wolves: One that still holds out hope for a continued relationship with Joyce despite her relationship with Dorothy. The other that wants to high five Joyce for having sapphic sex with his roommate’s ex. Both want to watch the next time it happens.

Joyce not getting stuff is kind of the whole premise of the comic, but it’s still frustrating that she doesn’t get that Joe has done a lot to get past the “sex monster” label— inspired to do so by her— and here she’s still calling him that. A big reason he was so promiscuous was because he didn’t trust relationships or himself to be in them. So the girl he genuinely tried for still calling him that, even as a joke, has got to hurt.

I agree with this. I'm the world's biggest "There Should Be Main Character Polyamory" campaigner, and possibly the world's second biggest "It Should Involved JoyDorJoe", but Mx. Willis draws expressions VERY well. Their eyebrow game is second to none, and those are not totally happy eyebrows. That said, it's pretty normal to have a lot of feelings about a situation like this. I don't think he's Only Sad or Only Hurting or even Only Worried. I think he's being sincere when he says he finds it hot and I think the smile is sincere, too. Just not the only thing happening.

Do you hate me? Do you want me to die? Because what you are suggesting would actually kill me. Seriously though what’s to be gained by waiting that long from a story perspective? It has been a year now of being in the process of resolving the post kiss plot line and wherever you fall on how you want this resolved I think the majority of the audience is over living in the ambiguity. Dragging this all out for another seven months not only feels unrealistic it feels borderline torturous. There is not enough audience interest to keep dragging this out. There is also little to no story logic to Joyce and Joe to not just hash this shit out right now. Seven months from now I want to be settled into whatever the new normal if that means polyamory or not but I also want to be discussing new plot points. Plus I have to believe Willis is beyond over what the kiss fall out has done to their comments and would like to move forward too.

There was an episode where a character was trapped in a hospital room for over two weeks waiting for another character on life support to die and was not allowed to leave until they did. She understandably started to loose her shit after a while? I feel like me waiting another seven months is just going to have me in a similar state. If you’ve never watched the handmaid’s tale also look up Chinese water torture. That’s where I’m at with the idea of more waiting. I’m kink positive but only consensually and I am NOT into edging etc. LET ME NUT ALREADno one is as tired of hearing me complain about this as I am. Free me from this purgatory I beg of you Willis.

At this point polyamory is the only logical outcome. If Joyce and Joe are broken up forever there’s no story here. There’s no reason for this to have been dragged out for a year. Joyce is poly and Joe is going to eat those “I will never have a threesome with Dorothy” words. Preferably while he’s eating out Joyce. And Joyce is going to town on Dorothy. And everybody’s happy! THE END!!!

I think he’s supportive of her having had the sex but he wants to know where he and Joyce stand. He’s waiting to either get his heart broken fully or have his hope and patience rewarded. It’s a tough spot to be in. So yeah for those who have kept insisting the break up happened months ago irl. Nope. If it happens this is it happening. This is the break up talk. Potentially. Potentially not.
