tifani

Honestly surprised we didn’t cut to Becky and Dina.

Lazuli

hmmmmmm that last panel

KiasyonSFM

Something something greed in da bible

Railway Series Book Club

"I am Dorothy's, PERIOD!" (sorry, read that second panel and the Beast Machines brainrot took hold)

Logibear

And so it begins....

SilverMoon9000

Is it happening? Is the poly route unlocking?

Andrew

What are the odds on end of storyline / timeskip?

Corronchilejano

"This is my girlfriend Joyce, and this is her boyfriend Joe."

GundamBradley

A whole lot to digest with this one. I do like what Joyce is saying, even if the last panel is very much making me think, no way it's going to be that tidy.

tifani

Looks like it.

tifani

Joyce has had the sex with Dorothy and she has had the sex with Joe but she has yet to have the sex with Dorothy AND Joe….

Astariel

I really like this self-confidence and self-awareness in Joyce. It's a good look for her.

tifani

Joyce is realizing the possibilities.

tifani

Dorothy: Joyce is gay for me but straight for Joe and I hate Joe.

AE Gonzalez

Uh huh, “grand rhetorical maxim.”

Logibear

Joe seems to have gathered enough Reputation points throughout the campaign to unlock previously greyed out dialogue trees and he'll have a shot at the secret ending

Harold

Isn’t it, like, only about 11:00 in the morning?

Steve McSheffrey

Good thing this is a fictional universe with a writer controlling things because statistically in real life college relationships fall by the wayside more than they endure.

tifani

Oh absolutely not is this going to be tidy. She is clearly building up to telling Joe she wants Dorothy forever but also him (for now?). We got Joyce’s hair blowing romantically in the wind and she is getting high on that “everything is possible!” energy. Similar to what made her kiss Dorothy. She is quick to get swept up in feelings and horniness. Joe is head over heels in love and about to find out he’s NOT dumped. Something I think he had fully accepted as what was going to happen. Basically these two are going to do something reckless and romantic.

Harold

Meanwhile, as Dorothy talks to Asma she suddenly feels a great disturbance in the force

5099 5618 v2.0

Superposition: [ ( Given the stated storytelling philosophy of 'Give them what they want, but not how they want it', I am all sorts of curious what will happen next ) | ( I am actively becoming curious if there is a point beyond which edging can be fatal ) | ( -AAAAAAAA- ) | ( Surprisingly coherent thoughts from our local relationship anarchist [1] [2] , in panels 2 & 3 ) | ( Oh, come on! You are a single step from figuring this out! ) | ( We really have no idea what Dorothy would want here, do we? Someone really should ask her, at some point ) | ( However, this goes, one thing has become clear: Joe needs therapy. Like, immediately. ) ] [1] - Non-complimentary. [2] - Please do not teach her this term at this phase of her development. She would become insufferable in ways no one is currently prepared to endure.

Jesse

Joyce and Dorothy ominously holding hands in a hallway.

Harold

@tifani: Joyce and Joe impulsively start making out right there on the quad and Dorothy happens along and sees them and busts out a freak-out face that makes even Joyce’s most extreme ones look like Buster Keaton

tifani

I think Dorothy is going to be pissed and I don’t blame her. But I also think it’s going to be a very complicated kind of anger. I also think if she finds out about Amber and Walky at the same time she finds out about this she’s going to ACTUALLY kick a chair this time. There’s going to be a lot of “do I get to be upset about this? yes I am upset about this. I AM UPSET ABOUT THIS!”

Dan Rabin

In this strip, either Joyce's hands are both performing the same gesture, or else one hand is on Joe. The gesture is tense as she starts to ponder in panel 1, then relaxed as she enunciates her epiphany in the next panel. She makes contact with Joe as her thinking takes her to the uniqueness of her relationship with Joe in panel 3. Joe notices an important detail in panel 4, and Joyce comes up with a dismissive line and gesture in the final panel, but without really contradicting Joe. Zooming out, the conversation has come around to Joe's proposal of multiple relationships in their previous talk, and Joyce has signaled that the concept is available to her (much as she seems to dismiss it as merely conceptual). Staying zoomed out, Joe knows much better than to demand "I asked you a precise question—respond yes or no!", for that would be to claim the relationship as his alone. Instead, they're engaging as co-owners to find their way together. Joyce has not yet brought Dorothy into the discussion, but we can now see how her declaration in today's last panel can be used with Dorothy: Joyce can't *get* any more devoted to Dorothy, and she won't allow anything in the world to diminish that devotion—and here is something she wants in that world, badly. Joyce will not be delivering an ultimatum: she has no threat that she is willing to carry out. For what it's worth, Joyce has been portrayed as wanting sex more insistently than Dorothy. There is space.

5099 5618 v2.0

@tifani The chair might actually vaporize, if all that came to pass. And still, she would be fully justified in all that.

tifani

But what the fuck is she going to do? Go to Joe and tell him “Hey I bought those land rights fair and square! Well not fair and square but the sale went through. IT WENT THROUGH!”

5099 5618 v2.0

@Harold Remember that scene in the Simpsons where Homer asked his family to leave the room before shouting an obscenity so loud they cut immediately to church bells and Ned Flanders saying it was the loudest profanity he'd ever heard in his life? I predict something like that, if that's what she walked in on.

tifani

Pretty sure Dorothy is still at the front desk but given that Joyce was supposed to meet her as soon as class was over and class is over she could be heading to meet Joyce right now.

5099 5618 v2.0

@tifani "Like Kevin Garnett, 'ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE'!"

Amós Batista

I love how she grew up in 3 years

Sajuuk-Khar

Joyce. Those hand motions. The hand motions of a total dipshit idiot of the Brown lineage. Zoning Issue will be born in fire.

5099 5618 v2.0

@tifani I think framing it in terms of land rights might trigger a powerful enough philosophical feedback loop to drive her into another dissociative fugue.

Lazuli

@tifani curious what her reaction will be to both situations

tifani

I think it’s going to be basically what I said before. Just her feeling a lot of emotions and not knowing what to do about it. Maybe she’ll just stand there frozen for a bit like an overheated computer processing. I do think however she acts she will break the trend of surprisingly unbothered reactions to the drama.

tifani

I decided to check out the main site comments and they are fully convinced Joe and Joyce are over but also reminded me that they are on the dumping stairs. But was anyone else dumped here besides Danny? Also love the idea of Willis subverting the expectation by having them not break up in this cursed spot.

5099 5618 v2.0

@SilverMoon9000 The poly route and/or the first of the Seven Seals. Curious which it is? Come And See!

5099 5618 v2.0

@tifani Joe (to Dorothy): "So, your preferred way of thinking about your recently-started relationship with Joyce is as a *questionably legal sale of property*?" Dorothy: (/glitches so hard she tears a hole in reality)

Sajuuk-Khar

@5099: Also that “Come and see” is delivered in the voice of Johnny Cash off the opening Revelation quote of “The Man Comes Around”.

Fart Captor

That comma is SO CRITICAL

Shane Wegner

Did you know that one could add two numbers to make a sum, yet also, one could add -three- numbers to make a sum? A three sum, if you will.

Kelly (they-them)

But I'm not hearing that you're *only* Dorothy's Joyce and the 2 baddies she pulled by being hot and autistic

Tessea

Conversation! We have conversation happening. This is not a drill! Also, please call Dorothy to the entry stairs? She needs to be part of this so we don't end up with some cliche sitcom 'overheard a bad-sounding part of the conversation but not the context' story.

Tessea

I have to ask. Who is Steve and what does he have to do with cereal?

Tessea

Closing on 2 decades. Comic time is weird.

Astariel

Steve is/was the best friend of the main character in the webcomic Questionable Content. As the comic went on, he started to show up more and more rarely. Then, at a moment of intense emotional climax, the author published a whole strip of Steve eating cereal in his in underwear. This has become a legendary moment of trolling one's audience.

Gale Tazzin

I was never worried about Joyce being open to it, or even Joe. I won't consider it a real possibility until Dorothy weighs in

Sajuuk-Khar

Joyce reveals her true form as a blood elemental

5099 5618 v2.0

Would the Soothsayers care to say some sooth about all this? Curious where our local prophets see this going.

5099 5618 v2.0

@S-K (To Joyce): ~You can run on for a long time Run on for a long time Run on for a long time Sooner or later, God'll cut you down...~

5099 5618 v2.0

@S-K "The Mercy Seat" remains my favorite of his covers, from that period, FWIW.

Morgan Byrd

And the author of QC, one Jeph Jacques, is 100% in these comments

5099 5618 v2.0

@tifani I suspect she is focusing on a subset of them, currently.

taekwondogirl

If she doesn't address the fact that Joe said he's open to a throuple, I will rage quit

Sajuuk-Khar

*Joyce jazz hands* it’s FINE, Dorothy will understand! She has to! *jazz hands intensify*

Jack Deeth

Jeph, if you're here, please fix you site, it's down!

Logibear

Load bearing comma

Logibear

If she doesn't and Joe doesn't ask whether he has or hasn't been broken up with as well, I will scream

AE Gonzalez

Everything about Joyce in Panel 3 screams, “I want your dick inside me, Joe!”

Girlycore

I think last we saw Dorothy she was heading to check on Amber, actually? I kept expecting her to walk in during shirtless time with Walky&Amber.

Girlycore

I believe the people are calling it Zoning Issue (not Boning Issue, thankfully).

Girlycore

Alternative: Joe: So... you think having sex with Joyce constituted a sale and now you have ownership of her?

Girlycore

They're always fully convinced everyone is over. The only time they aren't is when people break up explicitly in the text, then it wasn't a break up and everyone is terrible.

Girlycore

In the immortal words of Yelling Bird: AND THEN THEY ALL FUCKED!

thejeff

I read through those before coming here and there was a lot of "Well, they've talked now. Good closure." I can't even tell why anyone was thinking that.

Crunchos cereal

And some of us take the joke maybe a bit too far.

tifani

There’s actually a beautiful poetry to the idea of Joe and Joyce kissing out in public and Dorothy walking out to see it. It’s like a speed run version of everything leading up to it. So now I hope that’s what we get but also once she stops blue screening of death over the reveal I could see her deciding to allow the poly because it now technically absolves her of the “home wrecker” label. She would have a gift wrapped “um, actually” to hand off to Sarah. Speaking of Sarah I don’t think she’s going to be into this at all. I struggle to think of any of their friends who wouldn’t think this is a bat shit crazy idea. Except Booster and probably Amber. Sal and Danny already voiced disapproval. And Joe is going to be getting a lot of “you just want threesomes” accusations. Meanwhile I think we’re being set up for a poly situation where Joe and Dorothy are decidedly not dating each other and will have to make that very clear very often meanwhile once Joyce gets the idea of a three way in her mind she is going to pursue it like it’s her white whale. I think these three are heading for an actual throuple situation where they are all dating each other. So the next step is Dorothy and Joe slow burn enemies to friends to lovers.

tifani

Yeah it’s crazy. It is clearly the beginning of a conversation in that last comic with a level of art detail showing a plot important talk is coming. I think what we are being presented with is a lot of people realizing very quickly that they were wrong about something (very strongly insisting Joe and Joyce were broken up and Joyce had no romantic feelings for Joe) and now they’re trying to stop the speeding train (that is polyamory) coming at them. It’s like the longer the conversation goes on the more obvious it becomes they were wrong so they’re trying to will the convo to wrap up so they can somehow get to be right?

tifani

That is the most dramatic way you could possibly describe entering into a polyamorous relationship and feels very “heroically gay” Joyce. This girl is never going to be chill about anything. Seriously though I see her introducing the three of them like “I’m Joyce and this is my grand NOT rhetorical maxim.” And Joyce is in a leather jacket and they’re on a stage because they started a band. Joyce is the lead singer playing an electric guitar. Dorothy plays bass. Joe’s on drums.

tifani

I predict they start a band. (They also fuck).

Steven

It looks like the site is down, but maybe not to everyone?

Rob McBobson

Dumbing of Age works fine for me, but Questionable Content doesn't.

tifani

Thinking on Joyce in that last panel declaring her love for Dorothy “forever and ever”. She can’t declare that for Joe. Not because she probably won’t (even if they break up I think once Joyce loves you she loves you forever) but because Joe wouldn’t want that declared for him, not in this second when it’s all just so fragile. He wouldn’t even be able to declare that to her. He’s a child of divorce. He’s ethically non monogamous. He doesn’t know how he’ll feel “forever” and won’t make a promise he can’t keep. He just knows that RIGHT NOW he loves Joyce. And he’s asking if right now, presently, in this moment does she love him back? And the answer to that is yes. And it means whatever it means. But most importantly it means he’s not being thrown away. And there’s an important lesson for Joyce to learn in actively choosing to love someone you aren’t symbolically marrying. That you are choosing every moment and every moment after to just be with for that moment. That could end at any time and you know that and embrace it.

Harold

@tifani: D-D-D-Dorpy And The J’s

Tessea

I'm planning to dig into a re-read soon, but at the moment I don't think I ever realized that Joe was worried about being a bad influence on Joyce.

Harold

@5099 5618 v2.0: Agree 100% on “The Mercy Seat.” Cash grabs hold of it as if it was written for him- as if Cave’s psychotic words are just spilling out of him as he goes along. The stuff that nightmares are made of.

tifani

A criticism I kept seeing and we’ll likely keep seeing over the idea of poly being “bad for Joe” because the love for Dorothy vs the love for him is “clearly not equal” but let these two just be an example of love not existing the way you think it has to. It doesn’t have to be “equal”. It just has to be THERE. And there’s nothing pathetic about accepting love freely given when it’s offered and it’s real. Love doesn’t have to be this perfectly measured out thing. Especially because it’s a thing that doesn’t exist and has never existed in a form that can be quantified. Joyce loves Joe in a way that’s DIFFERENT from how she loves Dorothy. That doesn’t make it lesser. That doesn’t make it not love. That’s the lesson being taught.

tifani

That “I almost ruined myself forever” moment with Liz left a mark on him. Plus Dina told him there was a risk of religious trauma induced post sex shame crying. I think he was very willing to take it slow because he convinced himself attempting sex with Joyce would go exactly that bad and could only go bad because his past treatment of women makes him “bad.” It’s not like people have any issue with reminding him of how he used to be. Sarah, Joyce, and Dorothy are the only ones who really KNOW and accept he’s changed for the better. He has his own self worth issues to work through.

5099 5618 v2.0

@tifani And the first song of their set is "Gold Dust Woman"

Unknown

Oh hey cool, Joyce is 'hypothetically' discussing going outside her current relationship with a third party without in any way discussing things with her primary first! Again! Surely this is all ethical and won't go wrong at all! I wonder if Dorothy will be as cool about this as Joe was, given that the last time they were together her mind flashed back to Joyce being kidnapped? I'd love for them to all get some therapy, maybe throuples therapy.

Harold

@Sajuuk-Khar: "Zoning Issue Will Be Born in Fire" sounds like it could be the title of a Godspeed You! Black Emperor album

Harold

@Steve McSheffrey: Luz and Amity, a slow-burn WLW ship from the animated series THE OWL HOUSE

Dmitri0240

So for the people who are convinced this is the beginning of an eminent polycule, what exactly am I missing? Joyce made a very minor grammatical Freudian slip, Joe called attention to it, and Joyce immediately tried to walk it back and repeatedly stressed that she is "Dorothy's". How does this change the status quo? Even if Joyce did change her mind on less traditional relationship structures, is there any world in which Dorothy is comfortable with being in a relationship (directly or indirectly) with Joe? I certainly don't see it. And if that is the case, the only two ways this ends are 1) Joyce still possessing lingering attraction to Joe but not acting on it, or 2) Joyce bringing the proposal to Dorothy and that attempt brining about the end of Joyce and Dorothy's relationship. In any case, I'm not holding my breath until all three people express a desire for polyamory in preference to other options. Right now, we have one person who's completely unaware it's being proposed and would almost certainly reject it immediately, one person who *did* reject it immediately but might not have considered it fully, and one person who says they're completely onboard but who seems to see it as more of a consolation prize that what they actually wanted.

Steve McSheffrey

I assume they were together forever but fictional characters do that much, much more than IRL. I can't name anyone I was intimate with or crushed on in college.

tifani

I deleted my original comment because it was too argumentative and I’m going to try and say this more calmly: Joyce is not doing anything wrong by having this conversation with Joe. Joe was beyond owed this conversation. Joe is not some “third party”. Dorothy was the third party. Joyce was wrong for misleading Dorothy into thinking they were in a monogamous relationship when they weren’t even if Joyce super duper intended it to be. Joe and Joyce never broke up. They were on a break. Dorothy had a right to know that and it is bad that Joyce kept that information from her. But given everything that happened Joyce is not violating any kind of ethics here. This is course correction. Joe is Joyce’s other partner, not her ex. And Dorothy has been given priority for days now. If Joyce is not breaking up with Joe (and all signs point towards no) then this is exactly what she should be doing. This is what she should have done from the start. And after they talk she needs to tell Dorothy what she actually wants and what the situation actually is.

5099 5618 v2.0

Song that comes to mind: "Wild Child" cover by Jeremiah Kane

5099 5618 v2.0

@tifani I think this is where young folk would say "Church", these days.

Girlycore

Perfect. No notes!

Bronxden

I’m ready to get off this ride man

The main site hasn't worked on Firefox on my (Mac) desktop for some time now. Also QC has been hacked according to Jeph on todays Patreon post.
