I'm cutting Joyce some slack here, since despite her recent attempts at embodying the strip's title and other flaws, she's a good person and her trying to find out where Amber is comes from a place of concern. What she's doing isn't acceptable behavior, though.

She is NOT trying to find out where Amber is out of concern. They know Amber is fine. It’s been four days since the incident. Dorothy has texted multiple times and has likely been left on read. There is no special reason Dorothy is entitled to know where Amber currently is except that it’s on her check list for the day. Joyce however just wants to be proven right. If this was coming from legit concern she and Dorothy had multiple other options for finding this out before coming to Walky. Off the top of my head they could have sucked it up and asked Dina because Dina likely know or could easily find out and isn’t someone Walky and Amber are avoiding. She is also someone Amber would trust to know her location.

Hey maybe Joyce is just tying to cover her bases and use Booster’s proper pronouns because even though she feels she’s probably right she’s willing to consider a tiny chance that is Booster. I think it would be funny if she leaves this moment thinking maybe that was Booster. She always runs away from them the second they’re around. Maybe she never noticed how similar their voice is to Amber’s? Walky should text Booster about it and Booster should agree to say that was them just to fuck with Joyce. Joyce never gets to know for sure!

I note the comic-art conventions at work here: Joyce's knock, Walky swooshing the covers over Amber, Amber's little Asterisk of Speaking to give the speech pointer something to point to. Although Joyce has impolitely opened the door on her own initiative, she resumes the usual protocol of knocking once she can see inside, and she treats the edge of the door as a boundary for the rest of the strip. She currently says a lot of shit. I’m not going to humor her. She’s not a lesbian. Words mean things. And she’s privately nursing a heartbreak we just saw before our eyes not a half an hour ago her time that was her realizing she’s in love with a man at the same time she loses him as a consequence to her own lie of omission. So calling herself a lesbian is clearly denial/coping. If real actual bisexual women want to call themselves lesbians I have no power to stop them. But Joyce isn’t real and we all know she is not calling herself a lesbian or gay as a catch all. She’s calling herself that because she wants to deny the actual reality of her actual desire which is that she is a bisexual woman in love with a man at the same time she is in love with a woman and lying to herself and both of them about it. Because it’s just one more story she’s telling herself today. And given this is a story and I am a bisexual woman frequently presented with bisexual erasure regularly I am even more determined not to play along. Even if the character doing the bisexual erasure is the character themself. She has proven herself to be an unreliable narrator of her own life when it comes to thoughts and feelings she’s still processing. Dorothy too. I don’t judge them for it. I’m rooting for their growth. But I’m not going to be like “whatever you say is the truth” about it.

Please know that I so much consider bisexual and pansexual to be the exact same thing and have such deeply personal feelings about the word bisexual and if the pansexual label need exist that when you see a comment written by me about this coming in to specify pansexuality get a mention is not only unnecessary it’s actually kind of a trigger. We’ve discussed our views on the labels before and I’m not trying to fight about it. I would just personally appreciate you not doing this in response to a thing I just said. We’re on the same side of this issue ultimately. But we gotta agree to disagree on the labels.

Okay now I’m just wondering if Joyce’s face in that last panel is her reacting to Walky wanting her to leave and Amber very obviously hiding from her. Like okay so giving her the benefit of the doubt because I feel like she crossed a line here that makes me think she’s getting off way easier than she actually deserved but now looking past this I’m just going to focus on the fact that she really seemed to think she could just walk inside this room and find Amber there and it wouldn’t be a big deal. Thinking back on her whole “no hard feelings” attempt with Walky. I think she is finally actually letting herself feel that her behavior has altered her social fabric in a way she doesn’t like. Like she clearly thought before this that Amber is someone who would want Joyce to know she was okay if Joyce was showing up saying she was concerned about her. Now she’s finding out no actually that is not their relationship. I think she and Dorothy were both under the impression that they were better friends with Amber than all evidence shows they are. And this shouldn’t be a surprise. I think Booster who has known Amber for way less time clearly has a better understanding of her than Joyce or Dorothy when he says she doesn’t trust easily. But I think them perusing her this hard shows they do not know her that well, do not get her, and have not earned that trust they just assumed they had.

I so believe in this being an extremely funny thing to do I have also messaged Willis on tumblr about it. And if it works it will be the greatest impact I have had on this comic since that time I convinced them to edit in a pizza box solving the “did Hank get the girls pizza” mystery once and for all. Though I do recall Hank died for it. His sacrifice was not in vain.
