Mark Thompson

Or at least cut it down to every 20 minutes. Cut the guy some slack.

Ria

God dorothy I so badly understand the impulse to ask the person I've wronged whether I've apologized enough, and whether I can possibly apologize some more, please could I, please you have no idea how sorry I am and how much sorrier I can be

C

Amber, who helped this entire scenario of Joyce and Dorothy happen: "...the only stabbing pain I feel...is my stab wound...nothing else..."

MrShoggoth

Damn, Walky. Straight in the brutal honesty. Now to see if Joyce puts her foot in her mouth again…

Kelly (they-them)

Call Walky Basketball the way he rebounds so fast (I'm not judging Walky or anything. His feelings are valid and understandable. It's just that my thoughts are hilarious to me and I'm compelled to share them is all)

Logibear

It's not a matter of if. Only when

Railway Series Book Club

dorothy will see a free dose of self-loathing on the table, ask "is anybody gonna pursue that," and then not wait for an answer before mainlining it (not like this isn't a legitimate reason to ruminate on her actions or anything but jeez girl)

Harold

Joyce [poking head back in]: "AHHH H--" Dorothy: "JOYCE! Not the time!"

Astariel

Harsh, but not undeserved.

KiasyonSFM

Walky with the emotional liver shot. CRITICAL DAMAGE. 😭😭😭

GundamBradley

If only I believed you in that last panel, Dorothy, but third time's the charm, right? I think we're at 3, anyway, now.

tifani

Well this whole thing went as well as it could have. Seriously.

tifani

I mean honestly Dorothy what the fuck did you expect? How’s that “amicable terms” preference working out for you? Way easier to keep up that self delusion when you don’t have to actually interact with the people you’ve hurt. Or look directly at them like you are noticeably avoiding.

Maude Reads Things

Yeeeeeahhhhh that's as painless as that's gonna get. Don't worry, Walky, she'll stop dumping you in my fanfic.

Lazuli

what a mic drop

GundamBradley

Given she's already been told Danny's pretty annoyed with her, too, not fantastic.

C.T. Phipps

Dorothy is actually quite bad at remaining friends with her ex's.

tifani

Extremely fair.

5099 5618 v2.0

@GundamBradley For notably different reasons [1], but yeah. [1] - "Im not mad, Dorothy, I'm disappointed. You could at *least* do your non-monogamy *ethically*. There are just... So many books on the subject. Maybe ask Joe to recommend a few; he's got a whole *shelf* of them."

5099 5618 v2.0

(Mind you, I suspect hearing that from Danny would melt her brain, especially if Joyce was in earshot)

5099 5618 v2.0

@C "It feels like nothing at all! Nothing at all! Nothing at all!"

GundamBradley

In general, she could do worse, but given it's been like a couple of days, she really should've asked herself what she's asking for here. Absolution?

5099 5618 v2.0

@Gundam Bradley I think that's it, yes.

tifani

She did absolutely nothing to make a friendship possible so she should have expected this. I think she was just counting on residual feelings of affection to make a friendship happen by default with absolutely no effort on her part. Because Walky defaulting to loving her and forgiving her bad behavior has been the pattern of these two over and over. But this break up is not like the other times.

Logibear

"Hey, believe it or not, dealing with my ex's guilt is not an aphrodisiac. Sorry Amber" "AHA! YOU SAID SHE WASN'T THERE"

tifani

Well she can’t dump him again if they never date again.

Logibear

"um... you going to eat that?" - Dorothy whose mouth is just smeared with guilt like melted chocolate

Railway Series Book Club

its like when a dog tries to eat some plastic trash, joyce is gonna have to force her mouth open and snatch anxiety the right out of there

Corronchilejano

Amber: "You know walky, she didn't sound like she had emotionally dumped you. Have you considered..." *takes out polyamory pamphlet from her belt*

Lazuli

@tifani i feel this reality check coming sooner rather than later will ultimately be to dorothy's benefit. she's been awash in horny and romantic emotions and interacting with walky and him telling her that helps ground her a little.

5099 5618 v2.0

@tifani For one, she let Joyce break the news and laugh in his face about it. I mean, Joyce didn't ask if she could *do* that, but still.

tifani

She allowed Joyce to do that. She then let Billie handle the fall out of that and made no attempt to check on Walky at all. Even when she shows up to his room she makes it about Amber and not him and only asks about his feelings as an after thought. She also let the person she cheated on him with walk into his room uninvited to interrogate him. She could not have done this worse.

tifani

She creates pain for him and then just stands by and lets it happen.

5099 5618 v2.0

@BBCC "Hey, speaking of which, what's 'guro' mean?"

Shane Wegner

Yesterday I was thinking “This drop-by at least gives Walky a chance to lay down some boundaries.” Pointing out a Dorothy’s actions do hurt is indirectly that.

Shane Wegner

“Speaking of knife wounds, how’s the one I left in your heart doing? Could I give it a little twist or sprinkle of fresh salt for ya?” “I’d rather you didn’t, yet here you are doing it anyway.” “OH LET ME GIVE IT A KICK” “Joyce, no.”

Shane Wegner

I just realized the List of People In-Universe Who Actively Like Dorothy Keener is quite small, while People Who Do Not is growing longer.

Terra Bruder

I swear to the goddess that no-filter walkerton is more generous than some of y'all

GundamBradley

Short of like, Danny and Dorothy, there's pretty much no ship in this comic that I think the door is ever totally shut on. Well, Mike and Ethan, but ones without dead people in it, I mean.

Sajuuk-Khar

I fucking love how Joyce is just unrepentantly nosey here, guided by id, and Dorothy is here mostly in the manner of a fantasy world penitent with a thorned whip obsession lmaoooo It’s them at their most deranged extremes

Sajuuk-Khar

Dorothy: “Dead dove. Do not eat.” *sighs, puts the dead dove in the microwave* No, no, it’s my fault for needing food

Sajuuk-Khar

I feel like this is still amicable? Walky clearly wants to remain friends but uh. Circumstances

Katrina Marie Paton

@tifani who hurt you honey? Cause they did one hell of a job and I'm sorry you had to go through that.

tifani

@katrina Hey, I’d prefer not to have personal assumptions made about me and posted publicly based on how I analyze a fictional story, thanks.

5099 5618 v2.0

@S-K I think "mutual agreement regarring cessation of hostilities" is potentially negotiable. Potentially.

5099 5618 v2.0

@S-K Proposed edit: Most deranged *so far*.

5099 5618 v2.0

@Lazuli NRE is a hell of a drug, it's true, but it *does* wear off.

Jasmijn Wellner

"I was thinking of dumping you again right here and now, just for the fun of it, but I guess I better not... Unless?"

Rob McBobson

Reminds me of what I read once. "Apologizing once to somebody means you're sorry, and you're apologizing for their sake, to atone to them. If you apologize again, later, it's for your own sake. They didn't react the way you were hoping the first time, and you're hoping to get a better reaction from them." I'm not saying that I in particular needed to hear that, but at the same time, hooboy, did I need to hear that.

Ryan Malcolm

Walky and Dorothy both deserved that line by Walky.

tifani

I did say “if”

tifani

I mean to be fair to him he has really only shown significant interest in the exact same two girls this whole time. Dorothy basically had to talk him into Lucy and that relationship was always going to be short lived. Basically I think this reputation he has gained as a guy who rebounds quick isn’t really an accurate representation of him. Being with girl a then being with girl b then taking a mild detour to girl c then going back to girl an only to reunite with girl b when girl a leaves him just seems like an expected behavior. A real serial rebounder has more variety mixed in….like Dorothy. I’d things end with Joyce I do not see her next romance being anyone we could predict….Asma? Jocelyne? Amber to make things worse?

thejeff

Dorothy: "No, I'm sorry, but I'm exclusive with Joyce now." Joyce: "Um, about that ..."

5099 5618 v2.0

@Terra Bruder He could have screamed and thrown stuff and still not have overplayed things. This is a *very* mature and measured response on his part, IMHO.

5099 5618 v2.0

@thejeff J: "...wait... nevermind. (>.>)" D: "...what th-"

5099 5618 v2.0

@Rob McBobson I think I needed to hear that, too. For reasons unrelated to the comic, actually. Thanks.

Sajuuk-Khar

Oh that goes without saying

Beck Chonigman

Out of the two people who just more or less barged into Walky's room (at his door, whatever) Dorothy is, surprisingly, the one who has to apologize to him the least.

Jayne Lindgren

There's a few people for whom Dorothy Keener is now apparently The Worst Person, because being someone who tries to be good but screws up is apparently much, much worse than being someone who actively does bad but is consistent about it. "I'm a bad person, but I'm honest about it!" is one of the most toxic sentiments ever.

tifani

I disagree. Dorothy was his actual girlfriend. Joyce was Dorothy’s best friend Walky had a mutual on going semi antagonistic relationship with but who he also legitimately considered a friend (as did Joyce). Both owe apologies but Dorothy was the one who had made an actual commitment to him, pursued him, and agreed on labeling their relationship as something that came with expectations she completely failed to live up to and made little to no effort to try and live up to. She did not have to agree they were back together post them hooking up after he broke up with Lucy. She knew where her head was at. She did anyway. Just like she knew they were invading Walky’s privacy by coming in here and she let it happen anyway. Speaking specifically on this last iteration of their relationship even though I could say more about the other times: she was a bad girlfriend and a bad friend and he is fully justified in telling her to leave him ALONE because they are not amicable, they are no longer friends, and that’s on her. She fucked this relationship so completely he would be fully within his rights to never speak to her again and that is on her. And that “message received” seems to be her finally getting that.

Beck Chonigman

Did she? Know where her head was at? It seems to me she was just running around like a chicken with its head cut off, lost in a crisis of self. But regardless, no matter how antagonistic their prior dynamic was set up, Joyce outright mocking Walky before Dorothy even officially ends the breakup conversation is so horribly and needlessly cruel. That's literally kicking someone while they're down while adding salt in their wound at the same time. She literally laughs at his pain. I'd say that needs way more apologizing for than accidentally leading someone into thinking they'll be a more permanent relationship only to be broken up with not much long after, upon multiple earth shattering, emotionally charged discoveries of the self that conflict prior relationship planning.

Sajuuk-Khar

You’ll laugh so hard it’ll hurt when you’re aroused!

tifani

Dorothy knew she wasn’t in the right head space to be restarting an official romantic relationship. She could have done a friends with benefits thing and kept it way simpler. If not because of where she was at maybe out of consideration for the fact that Walky himself had literally just broken up with someone. I think part of her going straight back to boyfriend /girlfriend has to do with a possessive streak she has with Walky. This idea that she is entitled to him when she wants to be (his time, his space) even when they’re not together. That’s how she ended up in this current interaction. I’m not saying Walky shares no responsibility. This was a mutual bad decision on both their parts. But Dorothy was the one who had been actively pursuing Walky prior even attempting to get him to cheat on Lucy with her. It was not an unreasonable assumption for Walky to make that she was not going to do all that and then cheat on and dump him 4 days later and she gives so much lip service to doing things the “right” way and being responsible. She was neither and she knew she wasn’t neither. And I have way less respect for someone who constantly makes lists about what they need to do and hems and haws about what they should do versus someone who actually just DOES what needs to be done. Dorothy gets endless benefit of the doubt about the kind of person she is because she has actively cultivated that image and her intentions are good. But intentions are NOTHING if you do nothing about them. What you DO ultimately matters more than what you say or what you mean because that’s real. I very much agree that what Joyce did by laughing in Walky’s face was fucked up. Her actions have been fucked up for a while now. And just so we’re clear I am 100% as mad at her as I am at Dorothy. However when it comes to who Walky deserves to be apologized at more I am going to have to continue to hold an ex partner to a higher standard than an ex friend.

Harold

@Sajuuk-Khar: I believe that was the original tagline for the actual O'Neill play / j

Astariel

@Jayne Lindgren - Yes, it's quite an eye-opening contrast to Mike's popularity.

Beck Chonigman

Damn. You were so right, even Dorothy agreed with you. Kudos on that.
