Railway Series Book Club

alright so churchgirls drunken one-night-stand is out, but RED FLAG DRUNKEN ONE-NIGHT-STAND IS GO!!!!!!

Logibear

Joyce: "I choose the path of most resistance" Brown

Sajuuk-Khar

Oh my God if Joyce engineers the sailing of Red Flag I will fucking cackle like a hyena

Michael Hill

Oh gee. What could possible go wrong?

Sajuuk-Khar

Cain Marko ain’t got shit on her

LupinThe8th

The Gingerness has been doubled. Now if only they pick up Carla too.

Sajuuk-Khar

It’s not like Ruth has ever ended up falling into bed with a succession of drunken dates

Harold

Counterpoint: JOYCE YES

AE Gonzalez

Exactly what this situation needs, alcohol.

Harold

I love that this happens so fast that Becky's hands are still in that position

Edwin I Callahan

Seriously, I think Ruth/Becky/alcohol social interactions have great comedic potential.

Harold

@Michael Hill: Pull up a chair, because this will take a while

Logibear

Also this is like getting Keith Richards to show someone how to dabble with needle drugs.

Andrea Andrew

Ruth was the first to see Becky’s new haircut!

Sajuuk-Khar

*rubbing my hands together, Emperor Palpatine-level sicko style*

KiasyonSFM

The fact that Joyce has the strength to strong arm Ruth into this is heartening and worrying in equal measure

Andrea Andrew

I always thought the red hair club for women worked.

GundamBradley

There have been *worse* plans in this comic's history, so....

Sajuuk-Khar

Genuine question: have there???

Sajuuk-Khar

**also see: disastrous on a biblical level

Kazo

Know thy loopholes, I GUESS.

Astariel

Joyce is a problem solver! And also a problem creator. Often at the same time.

tifani

Joyce have you lost your actual mind? DID YOU FORGET RUTH IS A RECOVERING ALCOHOLIC.

E

Everyone has secret heelys (Except Carla)

tifani

RUTH IS A RECOVERING ALCOHOLIC.

tifani

I am at a loss of thinking of a single one.

tifani

THANK YOU!

MrShoggoth

It’s like sending someone to Saudi Arabia to take a get away from sand.

tifani

Joyce has become so codependent in the last week she is so freaked out by Becky’s desire to handle her break up like an actual adult instead of just getting drunk and wallowing and ignoring the issue she has shoe horned someone who is in recovery from an extreme addiction to alcohol that contributed to her being actively suicidal into going to a bar. I’m just typing that all out and looking at it. In horror. I hope Billie finds out. I want Billie to find out.

tifani

As someone who has a family history of alcoholism to the point where my dad got drunk one night 6 years ago with some people he should not have to “unwind” after a series of life setbacks and the series of decisions he made that night led to him fucking dying at the age of 52… I kind of want to kill Joyce right now.

C.T. Phipps

This will end with them sleeping together.

tifani

Or or how about let’s talk about my alcoholic suicidal little sister getting drunk one night and me having to call the cops on her because I didn’t think I could wrestle a knife away from her and I really didn’t want her to stab herself like she kept saying she was going to!

tifani

My sister’s doing fine these days fortunately. But hate to know what would have happened if she’d run into people like whoever encouraged my dad to get drunk when he was having his dark night versus my sister having me.

5099 5618 v2.0

Well, I hadn't expected Joyce to launch Red Flag *by hand*, but here we are.

tifani

I’m taking a break from the comments /comic until this next sequence of events resolves. This shit isn’t cute or funny for me to see anyone speculate on like this or make light of. I am legitimately fucking triggered. See you guys in a week or whatever. And the only reason I’m not deleting the personal stories below that I really don’t go around telling random people is that I think people should take stuff like that into consideration and it could help out someone who might need it someday.

5099 5618 v2.0

@Kiasyon Back in the Walkyverse she could go toe to toe with every other humanoid but Sal (maybe). Supposedly this was due to being the youngest of the baseball team that is her siblings, and learning to scrap very, very young, as a result.

Tessea

Oh hi, Ruth! Welcome to the storyline! I love how Becky's pose barely changes after panel 2!

5099 5618 v2.0

@C.T. Phipps (Previous comment deleted; I'd forgotten about Ruth's alcoholism and related issues. Mea culpa)

Amós Batista

Joyce, don't poke the Tiger with a short stick

5099 5618 v2.0

@tifani Ah, crap, you're right. There's even odds Billie materializes out of thin air and chases her down, for this one (>.<;) "Well played, Detective..." (/directed at Joyce, to be clear)

5099 5618 v2.0

@tifani Walky at the Halloween Party, when he couldn't keep himself from making jokes about Mike possibly not really being deceased, perhaps (._.)

C.T. Phipps

It wouldn't be cheating on Becky's part.

C.T. Phipps

I am all for this disaster.

GundamBradley

I'll say that "Sal pretending to want to be with Marcie to make Malaya jealous" was ultimately a worse idea. for an example, but yeah, this is still a low one.

GundamBradley

That one as at least obviously Walky having a serious issue processing the loss. We've seen since then that he's actually more affected than he wanted to admit to himself at the time. Definitely not a case where he was approaching any of it logically.

Shane Wegner

…because their hair is red! (And other reasons) 💡

Shane Wegner

And then Ruth said “No, I’m not doing that just because some freshman wants me to.”

Beck Chonigman

"I guess I don't give a damn about my drink reputation."

5099 5618 v2.0

@C.T. Phipps I would rather it not involve Ruth drinking, or having a rehash of the "act with integrity; no regrets" scene from the previous timeline, myself.

darklion

Nothing can go wrong

Dan Rabin

The Rule of Funny is strong with this one. Also, the Rule of Strong is funny with this one.

Dan Rabin

Perhaps Becky, having just said no to Joyce, can also say no to Joyce's terrible plan B. Ruth can also say no to things, and Jason sometimes helps her. BTW, perhaps the main site should have a tag "boozles" to allow us to index ethanol ingestion. Use of the drug has accompanied some key plot nodes.

ThatOneGuy

She is also flying... Her feet are not on the ground. Joyce is just pushing Ruth into Becky so fast, she never touches the ground.

Sajuuk-Khar

@5099: Okay, but what if instead of a truck it’s Becky’s ladyparts, and Ruth isn’t in a car, and she says “act with integrity, no regrets” before eating Becky out so hard that Becky dies

Rob McBobson

Calling it now: Becky gets drunk, makes a drunken confession about how sorry she is that she hurt Dina's feelings and how much she loves Dina, and Dina overhears it and is moved.

Sajuuk-Khar

THE PROPHETESS, THE SIBYL

Sajuuk-Khar

Jason has never said no effectively to anything in his entire life and it’s cruel to expect him to start now

Samel da Camel

I love Ruth, and would die to see just one more strip with her interacting with the rest of the cast, but I don't really like the premise of drinking. Joyce should get Ruth to take Becky out to watch a movie, or to dinner or something. Why does alcohol have to be involved? Like, I get Becky missed out the dranks night with Joyce for Dorothy - but was the 'sinful', rule-breaking, underage drinking such a vital part of that for Joyce?

Samel da Camel

To clarify I support Joyce's dranks night and I know it is very important to Joyce, but I don't think that necessarily translates to Becky - and she needs support right now, not the same epiphanies as Joyce.

joe mcguire

So the concept of “tending your own garden” is pretty foreign to Joyce, huh?

thejeff

Except that Becky doesn't seem to have a problem with the idea of drinking, just of going out with Joyce to do it, because a) Dina might misunderstand and b) she needs to stop doting on Joyce. And sadly, it's not like Ruth is actually in recovery. Seems she can drink again, now that she's on new medication that doesn't cause a bad reaction. Not sure I like that, especially it doesn't seem to have been portrayed as a problem.

Joseph

The fact that Becky isn’t falling to or touching the ground while leaning on Ruth (and Ruth isn’t holding Becky) implies the two of them are accelerating. Joyce is truly powerful.

Harold

I do not want to discount anyone who's triggered by this turn of events or is pointing out (rightfully so) that this is a terrible position for Joyce to be putting both of them in, but I *do* want to remind that Ruth recently provided a (relatively) safe space for Dorothy to get drunk (after Dotty made it clear that if Ruth didn't, she would find an *unsafe* space if she had to), and if memory serves she did so without drinking herself. This is not anywhere near the same kind of situation, but as Ruth points out here she has become the unofficial Resident Alcoholic Adviser, and she's good at it (or, as good as one can be at doing something bad).

Sajuuk-Khar

I think this is tied up in Joyce’s love for Becky/the miracles of the neurodivergent brain. She knows Becky was genuinely upset not to be there for the first time Joyce drank, and so thereby The Way to support Becky is to correct this wrong and keep her oath to take Becky to dranks. Becky points out that this will be social Kryptonite to her relationship with Dina, and Joyce comprehends BUT she still has that “The Way” track so she replaces herself with Reasonable Authority Figure, Ruth

Sajuuk-Khar

Also none of them really get the “alcoholism” part of Ruth’s dilemma and Ruth does a lot to minimize that part of her situation

Emily Baldi

Two reds don't make a right? Or something?

NinjaZaku

I'm sure nothing bad will come of this

C.T. Phipps

Ruth went back to drinking during the time skip. She's not sober.

Andrea Andrew

To be fair, they don’t have to drink at a bar. They could go to a strip club and get high on gummies.

C.T. Phipps

Ruth has returned to drinking post-time skip and this is not something that will result in her relapse. Which is why I'm focusing on the possibility of a hook up. For a serious plot, it is also why I don't support Jennifer (who is sober) with Ruth (who is not). My family has a history of alcoholism and I side with whoever is giving up alcohol in the moment.

Andrea Andrew

I think there’s a way for Becky and Ruth to hook up without alcohol. Gummies, perhaps?

C.T. Phipps

She's not recovering in the slightest and returned to drinking post-time skip. It's why I was on Jennifer's side and against their getting back together because Jennifer is sober.

C.T. Phipps

My family has a history of alcoholism and it's killed multiple members. Ruth went back to drinking after the time skip so this isn't a relapse moment. It's also why I don't support Jennifer and Ruth since the former is sober right now. I'd side with Anakin Skywalker over Kit Fisto if the former was a teetotaler.

Edwin I Callahan

I don’t think Becky is ready for cannabis products quite yet…

tifani

Ok you have made several comments implying idk… that Ruth opting to drink makes this somehow fine or she’s just less worthy of your sympathy because she’s not in an ongoing program or something? Let’s replace recovering with the word functional for the sake of semantics. She’s gone from debilitating alcoholism to recovering to functional. All that says is that a bar is still potentially dangerous for her. Someone could be really fine and good and doing okay and managing their intake throughout the week and then they step into a situation where the alcohol flows freely and even if they hadn’t intended to relapse that can happen. The safest thing for Ruth is for her to not go. And she could easily decide to not to for her own sake. But Joyce should not be even putting the idea in her head. This is a college campus full of people with knowledge of how to get alcohol. Joyce didn’t have to pick Ruth for this. Now I’m back to taking a break like I was planning to. I keep checking the comments out of habit and I really shouldn’t be.

Samel da Camel

That makes sense. Also, I kinda forget the others have agency and get caught up in what I think they are getting caught up in (not that their ability to say no justifies the suggestion).

Jesse

I think it was Pythagoras who discovered that.

Harold

@tifani: You may want to come back to the comic already. The situation did *not* play out the way you thought it might. As it turns out, no one is getting anyone drunk tonight (at least not yet).

tifani

Okay after seeing this comment and checking out the latest update I will postpone my break. I am still pissed at Joyce though.
