I honestly don't know the answer to this, but how does Asma's religion regard Lesbians (and other LGBTQ people) I've always had the impression they were _incredibly_ strict about such things. If so, could that be contributing to Asma's flipping back and forth between wanting to engage Alice, and frustratedly pulling away?

Their previous strips together suggested a smoother or at least less harshed-on relationship than currently (www.dumbingofage.com/comic/stormtroopers/ for one, www.dumbingofage.com/comic/selfdiscipline/ for another). I think Angie is just shocked by the break in routine from the usually organized and proper Asma, with a possible side dish of being a fellow Muslim so the missing isha is really raising her eyebrows

The way she dresses so strictly according to curtain rules implies that her family are immigrants and uniformly committed to the religion. Or converts who are generally even more gung ho. I’m just getting the feeling that, like Joyce and Becky, if she comes out as gay to her family she’ll be roundly rejected by her whole community, cut off from all support and tuition, and possibly even physically harmed. Joyce is pretty lucky her father is also in the process of recovering. Or even if she dates at all, especially a boy outside her ethnic group and not chosen for her by her father a decade ago.
