Lazuli

this feels like meta-commentary

jafortee

“You text my parents on Facebook?”

Ragtime

Willis stares out at the audience with this one

Jamie (QueenofSodor)

okay i was wondering if that second pannel yesterday was veiled commentary or not but now it *definitely* feels like this sequence is making veiled commentary vis a vis the comic these women inhabit i don't see a reason Julia Gray can't be involved with President Doris, Lord Jakkar, and Random Guy Seth! it's pride month, Joyce, let your girl poly out a li'l!

KiasyonSFM

Dorothy so quick to label someone as temporary...🤔

C

Joyce: ...But what if, and here me out...Julia dated both President Doris AND Seth at the same time- Dorothy: ...*raises eyebrow* Joyce: THIS IS PURELY HYPOTHETICAL AND HAS NO CORRELATION TO ANY AUTHORS REAL OR IMAGINED! Dorothy: ...*raises eyebrow even further* Joyce: *begins going full gibberish*

Astariel

Glad to see that Joyce is keeping the important things in perspective. Are we seeing a little reluctance from Dorothy to let her parents know about the new relationship? I wonder, is that because it's bound up with her abandoning Yale and her Presidential ambitions, or is there more to it?

Sajuuk-Khar

Dorothy: Joyce announces her love for me subtextually every day in the comic strip where I am obviously future horny President :3 Also Dorothy: Joyce is strictly talking about comic strip plots and has no lingering feelings for anyone represented by these characters :3

Sajuuk-Khar

The peach emojis were making the Keeners very worried that while flattered, they *were* going to have to explain to Joyce that 1.) atheists are not automatically swingers, and 2.) she is way, way too young if they were

Panel 1: Coming soon - The Thing with Two Heads: A Dumbing of Age Body Horrorgraphique

David M Willis

and remember, we're still a few months out from The Smooching publishing on-site as i was writing these

Lazuli

so is dorothy supposed to jakkar or doris?

Harold

@Jamie (QueenofSodor): That is, like, the thinnest veil imaginable

Sajuuk-Khar

“Joe…I found…A solution…To hussiness….A solution to ALL the lonelinesssss…of flessssshhhhh…”

Sajuuk-Khar

Imagine if she did and Jacob got mad about it

Sajuuk-Khar

I love Dorpy and how like, she will *torment* herself over stupid, easily resolved shit but then “Everything Is Fine” at situations like this, it’s very endearing in a dumb way, it’s the perfect trait for her nerdy butt

5099 5618 v2.0

@C Dorothy: (/silently). "Exactly as planned..."

5099 5618 v2.0

(headcannon: a variant of the Death Note exists in DoA, except it determines who hooks up with whom, and under what circumstances.)

Andrea Andrew

It is very necessary, Dorothy! I know people who have the most accepting parents and for them, it still feels great. Mine were kinda…accepting of the Bi reveal, not so much on the trans reveal. So is Dorothy also the space alien?

Andrea Andrew

Does Julia still miss Seth? Will she want to be with both Doris and Seth?

Jamie (QueenofSodor)

she's such a fascinating creature. i want to wobble her like a piece of sheet metal

5099 5618 v2.0

Not everyone *has* to come out to their parents, Joyce. Some of our parents have outright asked if we were gay more than once, so it can feel kind of redundant. [1] [1] - (Jokes on them, tho: that was (mostly) *autism* they detected! (>.<;) )

GundamBradley

I will say, it's quite wild that JOYCE has come out to her dad, but Dorothy is shrugging about coming out to her parents.

Gale Tazzin

dang, i forget how powerful your buffer is

5099 5618 v2.0

@Sajuuk-Khar Ever heard of "the Cenobites"? I've heard they throw the *best* parties

Tessea

Emojis require context to be properly effective!

Tessea

I guess fans can be a little predictable as a whole. I'm reminded of that line from Men in Black: 'A person is smart, but people are dumb, panicky animals and you know it.'

Ragtime

Well it's not just the bi-ness, it's also wrapped up in "I'm not going to Yale for my girlfriend" and "my lifelong goals are changed" as well as "i have girlfriend-adjacent ptsd". Parents can also seem accepting but then reveal will meaning phobia and ignorance

Andrea Andrew

Huh. I noticed that as well. Her parents would definitely accept her being bi and in love with Joyce.

Maude Reads Things

Joyce, not everything in this strip needs to map to your life 100% But also, poly is a thing. As is 'delaying the thing you want to later in the story so you can make it narratively satisfying.'

Fart Captor

Whomst among us is gonnq talk up the competition

Sajuuk-Khar

It is not…HANDS…that get you admitted to those parties It is…DESIRE

KiasyonSFM

Curious how Joyce is gonna digest this!

5099 5618 v2.0

@Maude Reads Things The kids call that "edging", I think.

darklion

( ⊙ _ ⊙ )

JMat

So, was this written after you'd decided to speed the Doyce thing along?

Jennifer Novelli

I forget, who is Jakkar supposed to be a stand-in for, again?

Harold

Jacob.

Harold

@KiasyonSFM: Interesting choice of words, given what happened on Saturday night

Astariel

Yes, from what we've seen of them, it definitely seems like they'd be supportive both of her new relationship and her changing life goals. I wonder if maybe Dorothy feels on some level like she doesn't deserve that support.
