I’d run, too.

Andrea Andrew

Outside of making her girlfriend jealous, I kinda forgot how Dina feels about Dotty.

JMat

Is this Dina avoiding "snitching" accusations by not naming the parties?

jafortee

apparently hurting people hurts people?????? I’m shook

C

"DOROTHY HOOOOUSE!"

Vivian

Dina's furrowed brow speaks volumes

Andrea Andrew

Yeah, maybe Dorothy should talk to Joyce, and avoid Joe.

Logibear

Dina is like a Utahraptor amongst the pigeons, if the pigeons were human sized and named Joyce and Dorothy

jafortee

the joke about “two hikers fleeing a bear” seems applicable here

William Lewis

"you better run, you better hide, you better leave from my side... " As ms Benatar might say...

C.T. Phipps

Dorothy Keener loses her Supreme Court confirmation hearing when this story comes up.

Crunchos cereal

Ah, here are the sitcom shenanigans for talking intimate matters in a public place!

Harold

@jafortee: Dorothy ran cross-country in high school. Joyce is dead meat.

Harold

"MAKE IT TWO FOR CANADA"

Harold

At least Dina is acknowledging that a person cannot be "stolen" (and, yes, I believe that she is somehow able to convey the quotation marks even with her hands in her pockets).

Maude Reads Things

Even more awkward because Dorothy might know Joe's mom. And I'm sure Dina is enjoying them scurrying away, however slightly

Dan Rabin

This strip continues a short series in which a character leaves a scene, and the camera remains with Dina. Each strip also has Dina providing the information that makes someone (including herself) leave. We've now been updated on how several characters feel about Joe and Joyce and Dorothy in a way that seems natural, without scene changes. We also have a curious focus on Dina, who isn't herself in the triangle. Dina is now stationary in the hall, not in a room. As of this moment within the comic, Joe and Karen are hugging in the Beck hallway, Sarah is headed towards them (Dina herself decided to leave them to it), Joyce is fleeing away from that location, and Dorothy is hurrying after her—perhaps with a bit of protect-Joyce-mode engaged. Booster was last seen making the acquaintance of "Slamber", who is in Walky's bed in the room shared by Booster and Walky. Walky himself was last seen intending to have lunch with Jennifer, but we followed Joyce and Dorothy out of that scene. We've been reminded of the police raids, Just another sleepy day in Read Hall.

Tessea

Dina - "Sarah, Joyce, Dorothy.... If I keep this up I can have the entire floor to myself after everyone flees the country!"

Dan Rabin

Perhaps she's omitting Joyce's name because the situation is known to Dorothy, and Dina is being economical in conveying the information that Dorothy seems not to know.

Tessea

I think it's more her following what she perceives to be social etiquette.

JMat

Dina would love this comment.

KiasyonSFM

Run Dorothy. Run away, and Never return (double Lion King references)

Bad Poetry

Yep, time to get scarce. It's bad karma to start a new relationship before the existing one(s) are over.... And sometimes, karma shows up as an insenced momma bear.

Dina (/inner monologue): "Right. All social obligations seem to be satisfied. Back to finding cereal to eat and checking the latest points of palentological contention online." "And yet...I have a sense that my next bowl may be just a little tastier than yesterday's..."

5099 5618 v2.0

@Dan Rabin She does seem to value parsimony, yeah.

wyatt

righteous execution by dina

Kazo

So this is the start of Dina's villain arc.

AE Gonzalez

Joyce and Dorothy spend the day avoiding Joe Mamma.

Harold

Eventually everyone goes to Canada *except* Ruth

Empress of Robots

So one thing that I just realized is that implication of Joe being upset and accepting his Mom’s comfort and sympathy is that maybe Joe wasn’t actually serious (in his heart at least) about trying poly with Dorothy and Joyce

joe mcguire

Really? I call this her hero arc 😂

joe mcguire

What’s funny is they’re acting like she’s gonna beat them up or something but from what we’ve seen I think all they’d get is a heartfelt expression of disappointment, which actually for Joyce and Dorothy would be much more devastating than getting beaten up 😂

“Minimization of US Persons”

Shane Wegner

Accurately relaying timely information in its valid context is villainous?

Shane Wegner

Counter-proposal- it hurts that Joyce didn’t care enough to invest a single conversation in the possibility, possibly for fear of broaching Dorothy’s rejection.

Harold

If anyone knows "6 Inch" from Beyonce's LEMONADE, please indulge me: Dino hat, she walked through the dorm like nobody's business Goddamn, she murdered everybody and we were her witness

Empress of Robots

That could be! I just would find it very funny (from a meta level) if the past year of arguing over whether they should be a poly ship in the comments is moot because Joe never actually wanted that in the first place...

Empress of Robots

Broke: Running for Office Bespoke: Running away from the mom of a guy you've known since high school because you were his girlfriend's gay awakening (and you also stole said girlfriend like she was a fresh baked pie on a windowsill in a Yogi Bear cartoon)

T Campbell

I think it's more like "I'm quoting a term whose definition I'm a bit fuzzy on rather than risk inaccurate paraphrasing"

T Campbell

The "named third party" thing is an interesting phrase. Dina's version of tact?

Harold

Dorothy: "It's me. Hi. I'm the named third party, it's me."

JohnL

Why am I hearing Monty Python voices crying 'Run Away!'? Is Joe's mom actually a nasty killer bunny?

Dmitri0240

That was always my interpretation. Joe was willing to settle for a poly arrangement if it meant being able to stay with Joyce, but that's not the same as actively wanting it. Given Joe's background, it would be completely understandable if he had said something along the lines of "I was willing to try monogamy for you, but I'd honestly be more comfortable in an open relationship if that's something that appeals to you". The fact that he didn't and instead went with "I want you to have what you want" spoke volumes. So if true, of the three people who would have to be fully onboard with Joe's proposal, a total of zero actually were. One would have immediately rejected it (albeit, likely with another existential crisis leading to rash actions), one *did* immediately reject it, and the other only saw it as a consolation prize. And I will readily admit to not being an authoritative source when it comes to polyamorous relationship dynamics, that feels squarely in the "doomed" category.
