(well okay, nobody on their side of the fourth wall has anything to gain, there's certainly a contingent out there on our side who'll be jacking off to whatever venom gets spat in that hypothetical conversation for a month straight)

Honestly, she may have known even before they were dating. Joe's experiences with his parents divorcing were something he was pretty open with Joyce about when Joyce needed advice about her own parents' issues.

1. Dina, as expected, provides the walking link from the previous strip. 2. This strip checks in with Dorothy's Concerns, probably so that we don't forget the world outside Read Hall), then gets overtaken by Dina the Messenger, linking Karen's visit back to the instigators of Joe's sorrow. 3. We have recently been set up to know that Joyce follows her friends' parents on social media, so we don't need any explanation right now for Joyce's evident online acquaintance with Karen. 4. Panels 4 and 5 have Joyce doing a pair of comedy/tragedy masks all by herself. 5. Joyce's comic haste is underscored by intersecting the panel's edge. It's a frequent and effective technique.

Karen doesn't seem like the venom-spitting type, but "Please go, haven't you done enough" would have its own kind of punch. (I don't hate Joyce, but I don't mind her squirming a lot and/or suffering a bit, which is my basic attitude toward most of the rest of the cast, too.)

I just meant more Joyce having a conversation with Joe and Dorothy. Joe needs some level of closure to get to a healthy place with all of this, and Joyce should probably tell Dorothy about Joe's suggestion that she's been sitting on for a while now without telling Dorothy about it.

Canada is one of THE most accepting countries in the world when it comes to LGBTQ+ couples. They even have specialized pathways and asylum guidelines for persecuted LGBTQ+ individuals globally. Marriage is accepted by both the system and people in general and has been since 2005, there are strict anti-discrimination laws and major cities like Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal feature vibrant gay villages and massive annual Pride celebrations. Now, Ireland is great too, I'm not trying to say otherwise, but MORE accepting? I don't think so.

@C - I see where you're coming from, but I don't think that will help any of them. I'm not sure what more closure Joe can get from Joyce. At least in my experience, keeping up communication with your ex in search of closure just ends up prolonging the pain. As for Joe's proposal, I'm of the camp that Joyce had no obligation to tell Dorothy about it unless she chose to accept it, and now that it's off the table, I don't see how telling her about it would do anything but stir up drama in their relationship.
