DUMP! HIM!

Minzoku Bokumetsu

"...and threw it out for the reason they went with"

Ria

Yesssssss I love some IW character echoes

Logibear

Awww. The deans hot white son is having thoughts... Hopefully he isn't too put out by this /s

Simon Magid

Oh no. I sense a lot of childhood programming here. Panel 5 shows that he understands this is BAD but then he seeks refuge in "surely they must have had a good reason!"

Lazuli

uh tony tooooony

Andrea Andrew

An already nice guy gaining more development.

Crunchos cereal

I hope Tony gets at least a nudge out of this towards realizing that authorities are not always good and right. Sadly, probably not.

Dan Rabin

Tony's sequence of four solo panels includes to in which he states stereotyped responses that people of his general regard for authority use to rationalize their positions. But look: in the silent panel he looks thoughtful, and panels 3 and 6 have similar mouth-shapes, but the later one is smaller. His head tilts down between the two panels, and his left eyebrow gives up its raised position even as both eyebrows show his brow knotting. I think he's processing, and I think his respect for Sarah has him doing so.

Jamie (QueenofSodor)

depends on if your definition of "good" includes today's sponsor, the Military Industrial Complex

Dan Rabin

But I see less certainty in his head position and eyebrow detailing in the last panel.

GundamBradley

This is definitely the schism I was thinking was inevitable. Question is, will it be between him and Sarah, or between him and his father?

C

Nobody wants to believe their parent is on the wrong side of things...unfortunately for Tony, he's in Dumbing of Age, where having a jerkass parent is statistically more likely.

Teeceemcg

Obviously a Republican (Pro Government)

Simon Magid

I agree. This reminds me painfully of when I was in my teens and I still firmly believed that society worked and was generally fair. My beliefs would keep dashing into the rocks of reality like a vessel in a storm gradually pounding itself apart on a reef. When they finally shattered... I did not have an easy time of it at first.

Sajuuk-Khar

Tony, my dear boy, I regret to inform you that if your dad is the same guy he was in the Walkyverse: No

Tessea

Oof. Okay, that's the first really non-ambiguous thing Tony's said that's put me off. Defending something like that is not a great look. But I assume he's just trying (really hard) to give his father the benefit of the doubt. (As I try to do with Tony) We don't really know how well he gets along with his father, do we?

Sajuuk-Khar

(The right option is your incredibly cute tsundere gf, Tony!!! Don’t fuck this up more!!!)

Packy Anderson

I think everyone is fundamentally the same people they are in the Walkyverse.

Fart Captor

Those responses aren't "stereotyped", they're alarmingly common amongst people who grow up privileged, especially if they're white and male. If this cowardly attitude about violent and anti-speach tactics against protestors weren't alarmingly common, cops and universities wouldn't be able to get away with this kinda shit

KiasyonSFM

Ooo. Now there's some struggling with beliefs....

Maude Reads Things

I can't fault Tony for wanting to believe the best of his dad and give him the benefit of the doubt. My concern is how he'll react when his dad almost certainly blows that benefit of the doubt clear out of the water.

Zesstra

Tony Carla 🤝 How can I justify this obviously unjustifiable shit my parents are doing

Shane Wegner

The college changed the rules after the fact and then applied them retroactively?

Gale Tazzin

i think he's having way less of a morality crisis than Carla is

Jasmijn Wellner

Tony: well surely the system can't fail! it can only BE failed!

joe mcguire

Tony! You’ve been batting 1000!! But you’re whiffing it here, homie!

Ryan Malcolm

Ohhh..... Tony has a choice tae make! He's having a wee crisis.

thejeff

Not quite. They changed the rules and applied them immediately. With some warning and time to clear the area.

Harold

@Tessea: At the very least (especially considering that he's the star-quarterback son of the dean), he's presumably always agreed (outwardly, and probably inwardly as well) with everything his dad does so as not to rock the boat. (It's probably the only thing Tony has in common with the guy whose mom used to bone his dad, a/k/a Walky.) Now that he's dating someone whose life, and whose friends' lives, are being directly impacted by his dad's actions, that facade might start to crack.

Tessea

I agree. I'm just not a fan of the comments when they see something like this and immediately break out the torches and pitchforks because they demand unambiguous perfection rather than layered characters.

Star Ringer

that's what stereotyped means.

Harold

@Tessea: "But torches taste *good.* Pitchforks taste *good*."

NinjaZaku

One hopes this is Tony slowly having the development necessary to eventually pull away from the bullshit he's been fed.

Beck Chonigman

I mean, so long as no one at or claiming to be part of the protest (without being disavowed by official leaders of said protest they claim to be a part of) is harassing/blocking random people quietly passing by, or say, attacking custodians for cleaning up swastikas graffitied on the wall. Then yeah. There's no reason to call cops on that protest.
