Carla desperately searching for the path of least resistance

C

She's trying...but we're gonna need to have the hard conversations with the parents/CEOs.

Lazuli

its not fine, carla

Tessea

Aww. But Leslie does have a good point. Robin won't care, though! Perhaps Carla and Leslie should try talking to Carla's parents together. Carla is clearly conflicted, and Leslie would be able to offer specifics without feeling hostile. plus there would likely be some initial hijinks where at first they assume Leslie is Charlie.

Jamie (QueenofSodor)

obvious course of action here is the return of Harrison to the story, so that in addition to solving this problem he can be Yet Another person for Joyce to run away from an awkward conversation with

Logibear

"Yeah, but it's like apples and oranges" "...you do know that that phrase is meant to explain that those are different things right" "They are?"

Astariel

Getting a little meta there, Carla.

Harold

@Jamie (QueenofSodor): Harrison (Jacob's lawyer brother, for those who may have forgotten) represented Carla in her legal fight to get proper housing at IU. He might be one of Ruttech's in-house attorneys. If the Ruttens hired him independently, that's another story, but I don't remember if that was the case.

voyager-ngc5195

Been having a lot of this exact conversation except it's AI.

Tessea

Leslie and Robin weren't arrested because of why they were protesting. They were arrested for protesting _at all_. The spirit of what Leslie is saying is true, but the letter of the law isn't going to be applied to the specific purpose of the protest. It's wording would have to be broad enough not to show favoritism to the University or Rutech. So the arrests would be because the protest was happening 'unlawfully'. So in court her being represented by Rutech's lawyers wouldn't technically be a conflict of interest. That's likely how Carla it seeing it. (In her own Carla way)

CleverCrumbish

Leslie... please pick up the phone here... please understand this is fundamentally a "twentysomething with complicated feelings" problem that can't be purely politicked away...

Amós Batista

"Daddy! How long to create a new feature in Rutech TV app, that will allow to customize avatar? For no specific reason..."

Maude Reads Things

That's not really how it works Carla. Offering struggling professors legal representation (especially given she was partially protesting them) would be a great thing to do. It's not at all related to the harm they've caused though so it can't possibly 'make up' for it. And you're not one of the people wronged so it really isn't up to you to decide that. I feel for Carla. This is going to be a long, painful conversation

Star Ringer

... What do you mean...? I don't think Carla having complicated feelings is really relevant to what Leslie has to consider and deal with regarding her own actions and affiliations.

CleverCrumbish

No, but it's something Carla needs HELP with in a way that she will not ask for and that Leslie is among a very small number of cast members actually positioned to assist with, plus it makes further blithe assertion of Leslie's personal positions on the matter irrelevant and largely orthogonal to the matter at hand.

A feeling I keep getting is, even if the university does divest from Ruttech, the problem is far, far from solved. Which makes it basically a form of tiny virtue signaling vice an actual solution to an admittedly giant problem? Whereupon I’d expect some people would scowl and say “It’s slightly better than nothing, right? Doesn’t that buy me some absolution?” My answer feels like “No, it doesn’t.”

orthogonal/ɔːˈθɒɡənl/Orthogonal means meeting or intersecting at right angles (90 degrees), much like perpendicular lines. In broader math, science, and computing fields, it describes things that are completely independent, separate, or unrelated, meaning that one action or variable does not affect or overlap with another.

SomeKindaNerd

I wonder if the main site's more... Dissatisfied commenters are going to be as frustrated with Carla.

SomeKindaNerd

That'd be parallel, no? Never meeting or intersecting?

It’s interesting to see someone devote so much Herculean effort to finding the path of least resistance

Star Ringer

... is explaining that Carla's good will is not the only relevant factor to whether people are willing to accept things from her not helpful??

CleverCrumbish

Usually yes, and in fact a thing she needs to hear. In this particular situation no. Leslie is trying to explain "This is more complicated than you want it to be, you can't use your parents' money and clout to do a nice thing for me here because they're involved in the bad thing you're trying to ameliorate" and seemingly not understanding that that involvement and Carla's guilt and feelings of helplessness to properly change it is *why she is trying to do this in the first place*. So it's a pointless thing to say in this situation because it starts from a position of Carla being clueless and not actively tormented by the very dilemma Leslie thinks she's completely glazing over.

Jesse

“Eww, she’s picking her nose!”

Tessea

Soon followed by "Daddy! I wrote a new feature in the Rutech TV app that will allow to customize your avatar! I kinda also deployed it as an official update."
