KiasyonSFM

I love this so much. 50 more strips of this quartet please.

Logibear

That last panel might be my favorite Joe panel of all time... Also bitter isn't a good look on you Danny

DonnieRamesJio

Joe mama is good people. Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Kelly (they-them)

Ah, I see. Is is time for both Joe and Sal to be emotionally dishonest

Kelly (they-them)

Although, actually, maybe Sal doesn't generally like to be touched

Ria

Danny's capacity to be so confidently bitchy is maybe the most eggy thing about him

KiasyonSFM

A Karen we can all root for

Harold

@Kelly (they-them): It's emotionally dishonest o'clock *somewhere*

Harold

@Logibear: Yes, I'm a little surprised at Danny myself. But then, considering that his Bestie Eternal's been wronged by his girlfriend (a woman who's never bothered to learn his name) *with* his own ex-girlfriend, maybe bitchy-bitter is the best we can hope from him for a while.

C Bonesmith

I dunno, I don't really blame him. He's always been Joe's best friend, and it's gotta be rough to watch him finally get into a relationship, only for her to immediately turn around and cheat on him with Danny's ex. If somebody did that to my childhood bestie, I'd be pretty bitter about it too. That's actually one of the strengths of this arc, I think. I don't read the main comments section so this might have been discussed up and down, but I think it's actually really interesting that this happened after Joe really started to change who he is as a person. Having Joyce in his life really helped him grow. This would not be tragic if this was happening beforehand; if he'd been cheated on during his womanizing philanderer stage, that wouldn't really have been so impactful. It would suck, because nobody deserves to be cheated on- but would he have let himself really feel it? Would we get to see this honestly quite excellent character work in Joe and his mom? I'm really enjoying these strips with Joe and his mom because we're seeing somebody who kinda defined himself by his callousness towards love and women and everything- we're seeing how he strove to be a better person. And then he got cheated on, and it's just- this is not the old Joe! This is a newer, better Joe! I think he's turned into a really interesting character and I am getting a lot of enjoyment out of seeing how he's grown and how he reacts and processes things. (Not like, schadenfreude enjoyment, just appreciation for the pathos.)

GundamBradley

Eh. I love Dorothy and Joyce. But, they did also do something really shitty to Joe. Danny's allowed to not be cool with that, especially it coming mere days ago. Additionally, Danny's a very loyal person, and so this kind of thing really gets in his craw, anyway.

C Bonesmith

Me too, I've come to really enjoy Joe and his mom is my favorite of the Actual Adults so far, I think! She walked in and immediately stole the scene.

DramaQueen

I wonder if Danny’s performance here is getting to Sal. He’s practically prancing. Why is he making such a drama-quicksand of a simple maternal visit? Next is he going to ask Joe’s mom if she misses Joe’s dad in bed? Standing there with his hot girlfriend rubbing Joe’s nose in being single is very cold.

Logibear

I do see where he is coming from, and I can understand why he's been a snark about it. But the last time we got bitter Danny he ended up torpedoing whatever connection he had with Ethan.

E

He’s a (good?) egg!

Maude Reads Things

Well, YEAH, but your mom rocks, Joe. Sal's mother is LINDA. As Sal said, they are not a hugging family. I'm reasonably sure 99% of her hugs have come from Marcie and Charles (he seems like a hugger). I think if Linda hugged her both their brains would short out from sheer awkwardness.

Maude Reads Things

@ Kelly - I've actually noticed Sal seems to get uncomfortable when people touch her with a few exceptions (Marcie and now Danny), especially if they surprise her. Plus also....her mom is LINDA. Who wouldn't feel the urge to shudder if Linda hugged them?

Melenynder

Sal is pretending that she isn't gonna run upstairs and cuddle Danny after this

Tessea

I may be wrong, but I think Joe and Sal aren't really being honest.... Just a hunch.

Avian

Wait, is that an egg thing? If so, oooh that explains a lot of my behavior before.

Gale Tazzin

i like the running gag of danny and joyce never using each other's names

Samel da Camel

I'm in love with Danny's face in that one panel that he is in

Shane Wegner

Dumbing of Age Book 16: The Actions of Some Unnamed Pieces of Shit

Doki

Ehhhh, as a trans person, I have to admit I'm a little bothered by the implication that being bitchy is somehow inherent to being closeted/in denial. I know it obviously CAN happen, in some cases, but I... just really am not a fan of assuming it's somehow inherent to some monolithic ~trans experience~. (Okay, getting off my tiny soapbox now, haha.)

Doki

OMG you're right. Fingers crossed Danny doesn't do something similar again, he's been doing so good lately.

Sajuuk-Khar

It’s definitely better for him to get his catty little claws out than to lean into the (admittedly hilarious) biphobia angle

Sajuuk-Khar

Danny and Joe are such ride or die doggs for each other, even as they evolve. It’s beautiful

Katrina Marie Paton

@Harold I don't see how Danny could hold it against Joyce that she never learned his name considering his current girlfriend never learnt his name until they started going out together.

Andrea Andrew

Is Danny holding a grudge against Dorothy and Joyce?

joe mcguire

Hey Danny, I think Joyce and Dorothy did Joe Dirty in this situation, but I really think you’re on the wrong side of history calling your ex girlfriend and her best friend turned girlfriend “pieces of shit” for getting together. I just don’t think that’s gonna age well. I think it’s okay to express disapproval—explicitly for how they got together before dumping their significant others, not for getting together in general— but be cool about it. I think you’re still carrying some resentment that’s being misplaced and it’s not a great look.

jafortee

Joe mama is so nice

Packy Anderson

Upon meeting me, my wife had an entire list of things she knew about me... none of which was my name.

David Pipes

This is why I went to school 400 miles away from my parents.

Sajuuk-Khar

Sal: Ah see. They support each other wit’ love an’ kindness. …Back away slow. T’aint nothin’ about this normal. Ain’t no barbed language, ain’t no gifts what are traps, ain’t no “Ah can’t expect you to measure up”s. Ah’m in the presence of actual Martians.

Harold

@Katrina Marie Paton: In Danny's defense (although I hasten to add, echoing GundamBradley, that I also adore Joyce and Dorothy), Sal makes a show of not knowing *anyone's* name, constantly using nicknames. Joyce, on the other hand, knows everyone... except, it seems, for him. One of the funniest things about the Garbage Roof gathering at the end of Book 10 was Joyce enthusiastically greeting everyone who showed up: "Ruth!" "Carla!" "Dina!" ".....Hat Guy!"

holdinglines

yknow, from what i remember from the roomies era, we didn't get to see much of Sal 'n Joe's dynamic. they got a coupla more interactions in It's Walky, but even those were done p sparingly or revolved around The Plot. uh, all that to say it's always a real treat seeing them bounce off each other in small ways like this. it's also just a good reminder how much David's writing has grown since then, which is always a fun feeling.

Maude Reads Things

Pretty sure the cheating is why he's calling them pieces of shit, not the getting together part. Danny's previously made his disdain for cheaters clear.

joe mcguire

It’s all interconnected and it’s all gonna look ugly in the harsh light of hindsight. I’m not saying he’s wrong, I’m saying he’s gonna be on the wrong side of history 😅
