Hostile takeover from your parents, Carla.

My wack brain just thought "man it would be funny if the wheels on her skates just started deflating in that last panel"

carla is being forced to experience complex feelings like empathy and that makes me very sad

GundamBradley

Can't say I don't understand why Asma's reacting the way she is, both because it's not like that improves her situation, and because she's Asma, and I genuinely do not remember her being warm to like virtually any cast member to date, so this would be an odd time to start.

Dan Rabin

Wow. Asma is further away from the camera than the much taller Carla, yet we can see enough of her expression to see that she is patiently waiting for Carla to finish. We do *not* see Carla's face—her struggle is all in the ellipses in her speech balloons. Asma's placement within the elevator shows that she is holding the "door open" button to let Carla get it all out, at which point she delivers a slight snark and allows the door to close. The final silent panel leaves Carla in the same pose she has had for the entire strip: she is still the Carla who apologized for Ruttech, a big giant pivot for her. I think Carla seeks approval, now that she's had various peers, plus Leslie, confronting her with her situation. Asma's willingness to listen counts at least part way, and she'll need a big reserve of approval for the talk with her parents she already knows she must have. Asma's unusual phrasing "I love that for you" may look garbled, but I think it may be deliberate and literal, as one might compliment someone on a nice outfit or haircut. Asma doesn't look pleased as she delivers her remark, but she has likely computed that Carla's nascent outlook comports with her politics.

Irene Knapp

"I love that for you" is quite the line there. Good for Asma.

DramaQueen

That’s true, everyone should learn to avoid her.

Astariel

I miss self-confident badass Carla.

Lazuli

"herb im sorry." "okay. i dont forgive you."

Tessea

Oof. I really feel bad for Carla here. She's starting to realize that she's rich and spoiled in a way that no one else is. Her parents gave her everything in so many ways that no one else's parents could match, and that actually means something to everyone else. It's really hitting her for the first time and making her uncomfortable.

Tessea

Were deflating whoopie cushion sound effects included?

Kid, get some ice cream. Goes great with crow. You've earned it.

5099 5618 v2.0

@Jamie (QueenOfSodor) I suspect she's better prepared for those.

Logibear

Really high pitched ones, yes.

5099 5618 v2.0

@Astariel She's still in there. She's just also having to deal with stuff she hasn't actively prepared for, lately.

Kelly (they-them)

Oh boy! Asma can put that in her apology portfolio :D

Maude Reads Things

yeah, that was like...THE most awkward way to do that. In fairness, she's not used to being in this position. God speed, Carla

Shane Wegner

Can you be sorry for something you’re not in control of?

Beck Chonigman

....I think you would have been better apologizing in general sympathy for the situation rather than apologizing for the whole shebang at this juncture Carla. While this is a mighty big step for YOU, it just comes off to others as trying to appease any possible guilt or ill will of you from others.

Shane Wegner

Controversial take- the deaths in Bulmeria are the responsibility of the Bulmerian commanders ordering the strikes against civilians.

Avian

yeah, I get why she's like that, but FUCK is she perpetually unlikeable to genuinely well meaning people CONSTANTLY for no reason??? Like I get she has no obligation to educate anyone, I'm not saying that, just...the unyielding passive aggressiveness is incredibly off putting now and I do not think she's a good person with how long it's been going on. She is ALWAYS upset with anyone for daring to interact with her while also WORKING A FRONT DESK. I don't understand the point of her, to be mean and unfair with no pusback?

Katrina Marie Paton

@GundamBradley I mean, there's Alice? I doubt most of us are Muslim and gay so I don't feel many of us are in any position to judge Asma's behaviour one way or the other. To suggest she is purely being a bitch for no reason seems unfair and almost definitely isn't the case at all. Just because we don't know why Asma is the way she is doesn't mean her actions are entirely arbitrary, it just means our claims are themselves completely arbitrary. "We don't know the reason and therefore there is no reason. Hmmm, can I actually get away with saying that? Guess we'll find out.

Justin Wells

I'm sorry but what are you even trying to say? Are you saying that the army of Bulmeria has been attacking its OWN civilians? Is that something that's ever been said at all in this comic or ever happened in its real world equivalent? Ruttech has been supplying the weapons for a slaughter and while it wasn't the choice of Ruttech the company to do said slaughter they're still the ones supplying and profiting off the death. They cannot absolve themselves of the complicity in said slaughter nor the harm their weapons have caused

GundamBradley

I am not saying it to be judgmental. I just kind of figure Asma is a pretty guarded person, and that she doesn't really light up around people who aren't her friends, and that we just... do not see her with friends. It's not like she's a ray of sunshine with Ruth or Raidah, people she is on a first name basis with. That's her right, and we know she has reasons to not put herself out there often.

thejeff

It's hard to know exactly what the direct parallel is. Bulmeria is the only nation or group ever named, so it does seem like it is come kind of internal conflict: Bulmeria killing Bulmerians, presumably some ethnic minority population. It's also hard to say how much responsibility Ruttech really bears. They seemed originally to do mostly civilian products, phones, bikes, drones. Carla said when this first came up that they sell computer systems to the government and thus probably the military. While that was likely a bit slanted in her parents defense, it doesn't seem likely that Ruttech is a primary contractor who might have some say on where weapons are sold. It's not even clear whether they're doing custom work for weapons manufacturers rather than just selling off the shelf components, though it seems likely they probably are. But just being at second hand with no control over where the weapons are sold, much less how they're used makes it much harder to condemn. Unless you're going to go full pacifist (or argue the US should unilaterally disarm). Personally I can't do that. I wanted the US to send far more help to Ukraine and far less to Israel, but that doesn't translate neatly into "building weapons is bad".

Sajuuk-Khar

What is Asma’s reply if not a laser to the emotions area

Sajuuk-Khar

Carla, grabbing the elevator doors: Wait! C’mon! If I built an Iron Man suit that was car-themed for no particular reason and went to Bulmeria and blew up all of Ruttech’s weaponry there would you believe me??? :< Asma: What are you TALKING ABOUT let go of the DOORS Carla: 😭 TELL ME HOW TO MAKE THE GUILT STOP FIRST

Harold

Skates will roll you home Butter toast will warm your bones But only you Can fix you

Astariel

I dunno. The vibe I'm getting lately is that Carla was born to rich parents, therefore she is bad and should feel bad about herself.

Johanne

She is so, so much closer to having power over this situation than anyone else except her parents and the board of Ruttech. A non-negligible amount of influence.

Shane Wegner

I don’t think Carla will be able to cause her parents to rethink the choices they’ve made so easily. They’ve surely thought long and hard about the ethical calculus of their choices, Carla has only very recently started pondering it.

Shane Wegner

@JW That is indeed how civil wars, genocides and/or insurgencies work, governments attacking their own, some version of which is happening in fictional Bulmeria and many versions of which have happened IRL. The government surely calls the other side rebels, traitors, terrorists. They likely call themselves freedom fighters, revolutionaries, etc. I think @thejeff said more or less what I would. If memory serves, Ruttech makes high resolution GPS chips that are useful in a lot of different applications but including missiles. Not like, nerve gas. In-universe info is light, but it’s not clear who Ruttech sold chips to and when, possibly unrelated third parties, maybe the US government, possibly before any of the Bulmerian war started. Even if Ruttech stopped making all GPS chips today, what would it change? They could ask the Bulmerian government to return all Ruttech GPS chips installed in missiles for a refund, somehow I don’t think they would do it though.

Derick Huth

Asma gets kinda trampled on by everyone. She deserves a break. Like a kitkat. Or maybe a little Alice time.
