Buckle up kiddos. We're going in raw.

Jamie (QueenofSodor)

going from 0 to 60 in only one panel, that's some impressive mechanical performance right there

KiasyonSFM

Very direct and to the point Carla.

Jennifer Novelli

A classic move right out of Sun Tzu's "The Art of War," or perhaps Zapp Brannigan's "Big Book of War!"

Rubia

Actually kind of impressive, being able to rein himself in after jumping ahead so very far.

Grace Serenity

This Carla redemption arc has been so nice to see!

Astariel

Oh shit, just jumping right in there. Gonna be a long 24 hours.

Empress of Robots

This is the "pie in your face" version of having a quick call with your billionaire parents. Very on-brand for Carla

Maude Reads Things

Hoo boy. Well, that's very Carla - rip the bandaid off.

Ragtime

Brave, Carla!

C

"What makes a person turn neutral? Lust for gold? Power?! Or were you just born with a heart full of NEUTRALITY?!"

C

This could get rough...but I'm certainly hoping Carla's parents make the right choice.

Dan Rabin

The layout of Emil and Janneke within their panels is nicely similar to the layout of Charlie and Carla in theirs. Carla's attention is on a screen mounted high on a wall, giving her a slight upward tilt of the head that makes her look extra serious. Charlie's attention is going back and forth between Carla and her parents, so we don't see the same effect in her pose. Carla's line in the final panel includes herself as "we" in referring to Ruttech's policies. She didn't do this in her apology to Asma three strips back, and she got snarked at. Carla *can* be trained! Stick from Asma; carrot from Charlie.

Harold

Next strip: "OK! Done! We'll get right on that!" "Well... THAT was easier than I was expecting"

Lazuli

oh just ripping off that band aid. okay.

Tim

"Oh, Kiddo, sorry, no-can-do, that's Ruttech's bread and butter. Everything else we do is just gravy. Just the icing on the cake. You like cake, don't you? I'll get them to perform at your next birthday as a private show."

Fart Captor

I don't see anyone being betrayed?

Andrea Andrew

A wealthy person fighting for the working class.

C Bonesmith

Aw man. Why do they have to be so nice? It's gonna be heartbreaking when they go "Sweetie, we're a multibillion dollar international company, our board of directors would remove us from the C-suite if we tried that." Or maybe I'm wrong and Carla gets good things! But as integrated into everything as Ruttech is, I can't imagine that it's still truly a mom-and-pop shop with just the two of them making decisions.

pinkinia

OMG you GO Carla!! 💜💜💜

Crunchos cereal

"Also if we don't sell the weapons systems, some immoral weapons manufacturer would sell them instead. See, it's better that good people sell weapons instead of bad people!"

Maude Reads Things

I also just love Emil's 'would you like to stay for dinner?" "WOULD YOU LIKE TO STAY *FOREVER*?" energy. Probably the last bit to love for a while.

voyager-ngc5195

The worst outcome and the one I'm most expecting here, is that nothing's really going to come from this. I know it hasn't been the theme of the comic but I don't expect Carla's parents to just disown her or stop loving her simply because she disagrees with them. Mostly, they'll just chalk it up to her youth and inexperience. She doesn't really know what she's talking about, they'll say, it's something you'll understand better when you're older. What Carla's going to have to realize is that her power to do anything about this current issue is negligible at best, and that if she truely wants to do anything about this, she's going to have to leverage her parents love for her against it. Which inevitably, means she's going to have to cut herself off from them. Entirely.

C Bonesmith

Which is extremely unsafe for a trans college student in Indiana to do. If she cuts herself off entirely, she loses access to the social and financial safety net that is a pair of supportive billionaire parents. She's gonna have some hard choices ahead.

Omnithea

Boil lanced. Administer disinfectant.

GundamBradley

I am so glad that Carla's going right for it. I feel like Charlie's presence is definitely emboldening her.

DramaQueen

That’s just way too much for her friends to ask of her and I’m sure none of them expect it. Asma will never like her anyway, even Carla can’t afford her meds or a place to live and has to drop out of school. Let’s hope the story isn’t written that way because it would add to our current heartbreak over everything else.

Tessea

That's about the reaction I expected on meeting Charlie. I absolutely adore how positive and accepting Carla's parents are. 😄 But kudos to Carla for not taking the easy out with introductions and such. She stayed on topic and ripped that Band-Aid right off! But now I'm curious how this will go. There are several possibilities: - 'Oh you're just too young to understand how the world works' - 'Don't be silly! We'd be out of business in a month!' - 'When you're in charge you'll be able to make decisions like that' - 'Okay. Sounds good to us. People seem kinda miffed about it anyway' - or what seems to be true uncharted territory for them all, an actual conversation/debate (hopefully not argument) about it.

Tessea

Oof. That does down the rabbit hole of darkest timelines. I could always be wrong, but I can NOT see these clearly loving and ridiculously supportive people cutting off their daughter for a simple disagreement. I can't really even picture them brushing her off considering they have moved mountains to help Carla be who she is (we should all be so lucky) They seem more like the 'prove your case and convince us you're right' type of parents. And I can't see Carla cutting off her parents over it either. Unless they're completely dismissive and blasé about the whole thing, Carla would understand she's not in a position to change policy. But I doubt she'd be enthusiastic about Ruttech as a brand/company anymore. I feel this will go in a more interesting route as we don't often see these kids making rational thought out decisions, and Carla is legitimately trying. It would be a waste to just shove that aside for a generic plotline. But as I said, I could be completely wrong in the end. ^_^

NinjaZaku

Oh we're taking the "rip off the bandaid" approach, okay. Here we go i guess.

Shane Wegner

I, too, support disarmament. But are we talking not making any GPS chips, or what? A lot of ambulances use GPS.

Packy Anderson

Both panels 4 & 6 go from 0 to 60! Carla gets it from somewhere...

Katrina Marie Paton

It would be one way to just push this conversation down the road without having to actually do anything I guess.

5099 5618 v2.0

Just pull that band-aid right off, whydontcha

Simon Magid

There's so many technologies that can be weaponized, and for that matter many weapons technologies with peaceful uses. They can't really be readily disentangled. :(

Shane Wegner

“My parents! If I can hit that bullseye, the rest of the dominos will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate!”

Shane Wegner

I’m hoping they effectively illustrate how naive imagining there IS one right choice is. 🤞

Jasmijn Wellner

of course, we mustn't forget the agricultural uses of bullets and rocket launchers

Shane Wegner

Have we ever even once seen that Ruttech makes bullets or rocket launchers? I dimly recall reading they made vehicles, etc, then some GPS chips, some of which other people were adding to missile guidance. Depending on who you ask, bullets and rockets have their uses. Ukrainians found them useful when Russians swarmed across their borders trying to kill and plunder and wouldn’t listen to reason or diplomacy, but would listen to explosions.

Simon Magid

@Jasmijn Wellner: I am not sure if you are being deliberately obtuse here. Throughout human history the search for better weapons technologies has also resulted in peaceful spinoffs. While the pursuit of better explosives was intended to more readily blow human beings to bits, it also made it possible to build tunnels and roads past otherwise insurmountable barriers. The modern steam engine was in part made possible by literal centuries of foundries working to make better tubes originally intended for gun and cannon barrels. Rocketry started as a weapons program and arguably has continued to mostly be so till this day but also resulted in weather satellites whose predictions have saved countless lives. Mathematics has been used for both engines of war and construction of better dwellings, bridges and devices of transport. Devices intended for purely peaceful uses have been weaponized time and again; likewise, weapons technologies have been employed to improve human lives whenever peace broke out for a while. You should also not forget the use of your brain to actually think critically as opposed to merely make pointless cynical remarks and shallow attempts to 'score points.' That, too, might improve your life.

thejeff

There's also the reality that whatever you might think about US support of Bulmeria (or of Israel or the war with Iran), a military and thus weapons are a fundamental part of statehood and always have been. If everyone would just give up conflict entirely, that would be great, but they won't. Even in our current days, I'd wanted more US arms support for Ukraine than we actually gave, but that still required the arms industry.

thejeff

In addition to what others have said, Carla cutting off her parents entirely doesn't change anything either. I mean, it's a big thing for her and personally for them, but it doesn't actually change Ruttech.

thejeff

I'm curious what people think the right choice is. Is the theory that the US should just stop all weapons manufacturing? Obviously try political pressure to change US policy decisions, but Ruttech isn't setting policy. And it's a stretch to argue that all the arms industry is inherently bad and should be ended.

thejeff

I know it's mostly a joke and I do want that for Carla, but it's always bothered me about Stark's arc. It seems very appropriate and noble in the superhero genre, but if you think about it a little more seriously the idea that building weapons for a democratic government is bad, so the billionaire should instead build super-weapons for himself is far worse.

Gale Tazzin

once carla decides something is worth doing she does NOT fuck around

Johanne

U.S. Export laws demand that any seller inquire about the final destination country and application use of any product exported that could be used for weapons technology. The law does this in order to make people try as hard as they can not to sell weapons to sanctioned countries like Iran and Cuba, but Ruttech could easily self-sanction anything headed to Bulmeria by cutting off their known supplier pathways and making the legally required asks for the rest. Some may get through the cracks by people on the other end lying, but it'd at least be a meaningful reduction.

Simon Magid

You are right about that. This is one of the superhero assumptions that does not work well in real life. I console myself with the fact that as superweapons go, collapsible rollerskates are at least environmentally friendly.

Rob McBobson

Hey, in order to keep up with the debate in the comic I need to ask if anybody could tell me all the specific details about the Bulmerian situation and Ruttech's part in it that we've got.

Crunchos cereal

”Stay awhile! STAY FOREVER!” One of the first times I heard a digitized voice from a computer. Yeah, I’m old.

Harold

@MST3K.fan: What does the singer who did "Gloria" have to do with all this? / j

Jennifer Novelli

They've got her number, just like Carla has her parents' number. Which is how she called them. QED! ^_^

Tim Starliper

I thought Carla was pretty much always direct. Good to see her using it to do some good.

Tim Starliper

I would like to see the last, but expect more of the first with a smattering of the second and third thrown in for added flavor.

KiasyonSFM

She seems to lose that with her parents cuz she cares about their opinions greatly. Glad that she finally started to get passed her fear.

Tim Starliper

We were seeing the beginning of this with Leslie, I think the conversation with Asma was the final push Carla needed - and Charlie is indeed the carrot in the stick and carrot analogy. Something positive for Carla. I think she is going to need someone to lean on - and that someone will be Charlie.

Tim Starliper

Nah, it'll be fine. Now excuse me, I have a page to obsessively refresh for a while....

thejeff

From what we know, Ruttech is probably a sub-contractor supplying guidance systems (and other computer systems?) used in missiles rather than building the missiles themselves. This means they've got no control over who they're sold to. They could break those contracts, which would be very expensive and take themselves out of the business entirely, but not much less than that.
