At least they acknowledge that they’re wrong, and they don’t want Carla to be a part of it, but it’s kinda hard for her to seperate herself from it.

Ragtime

Carla appreciation day!

Andrea Andrew

I think Charlie wants to hug her girlfriend.

Harold

"STOP CALLING ME PUMPKIN I'M TRYING TO BE MAD AT YOU FOR WAR PROFITEERING AND WHEN YOU CALL ME PUMPKIN IT MAKES THAT VERY DIFFICULT GODDAMMIT"

Sajuuk-Khar

I really like that Emil and Janneke genuinely are good parents, they love their daughter, they’re not abusers or manipulators or delusional shitheads like Carol; they’re kind They just also are willing to be direct party to mass murder without a raised pulse It makes this hit so much harder

Maude Reads Things

Fuuuuuck that's hard. That's a hard spot to be. Poor Carla. I hope her girlfriend is able to make her feel better. Like I said, I think (hope really) that Carla will be able to get through to them at some point but it was never gonna be in the span of this conversation and PROBABLY won't be the span of this comic. I also have to give Willis kudos here - we've seen lots of parents who are terrible people AND parents. Or people who are decent people but maybe not the greatest parents. Having genuinely good parents acting like this is a whole different kind of heart wrenching and it hurts to read.

"Okay Google. How can I take my surname off?"

Fart Captor

They're good parents, but bad people 😔

GundamBradley

The problem with trying to appeal to someone's better nature is that they may not have one.

Tessea

Everyone hits the age when they realize their parents are just humans with flaws after all.

Tessea

Charlie just like "...I actually thought that went well."

Tessea

_Every_ day is Carla Appreciation Day!

Buck Caldwell

Not with that expression on her face. That would only end in bloodshed, I believe.

Johanne

I LOVE CARLA

KiasyonSFM

Man it really sucks when the "no ethical anything" under capitalism means no ethical *anything* under capitalism.

Gale Tazzin

really was not expecting them to kinda agree to being evil

Tim Mitchell

Yep. This is where you follow them and get ready to be backup.

Dan Rabin

The stressful-all-around conversation is depicted by the thoroughly conventional technique of alternating panels for the two parties, but the last panel performs at least three wrap-up tasks: 1. The screen confirms that the conversation has been terminated; 2. Carla being mostly out of the room's illumination underscores her dark mood; 3. Charlie shows great concern for Carla—she is standing next to the now-disconnected screen, and looking in Carla's direction. Lots of "us" and "we" in the family, but the parental units are willing to restrict the perceived wrongdoing to "just us". ISTR that the usual trope for this sort of conversation is for the teenaged party to accuse the parents à la teen angst, but Carla hasn't been doing that. I don't know what's going to happen now, but I try to pick up on even small deviations from clichés by Willis.

I remember a saying I heard, on TV Tropes, of all places. 'Character is who you are in the dark.' Welp, this is the darkness, alrighty, and we're seeing Carla's character. Sorry it had to come at such a high cost.

Avian

the status quo is benefiting them and has kept their daughter safe, I get it. I disagree with them entirely, but I GET it.

Jesse

Like in the documentary by ProZD.

Sajuuk-Khar

This. Exactly this. They’re resigned to being vessels. It’s easier.

Sajuuk-Khar

They’re not. They love their daughter, and they think society is very important, particularly capitalist society, and there’s a right way to behave in it. They have morals. They are genuinely kind, and they believe that trans people deserve love and freedom and healthcare. They just have decided that the throne of “necessary losses” skulls is Fine, because I mean, it could be worse! They’re not sociopaths, they’re just cowards.

Sajuuk-Khar

If they weren’t evil, can you imagine who would be?

Sajuuk-Khar

Again, I think the Ruttens have a better nature. They do! They’re just…comfortable ignoring it, because of the money and the power not fully challenging evil affords.

Simon Magid

Carla looks like she is about to cry and is so angry about it. As well as angry at her parents, of course. :(

John C. Kirk

I think it's overstating things a bit to say that the Ruttens are "in charge of all the murder". You can certainly argue that they're complicit, but I'd say that the Bulmerian government (and maybe others) deserve a bigger share of the blame, i.e. the people who are pulling the trigger.

thejeff

The Bulmerian government. The US government. The actual company making the missiles. I'm not really fond of the focus on making weapons as the real problem here. The arms industry isn't going away. This is a foreign policy problem that can only be addressed at that level

Packy Anderson

It's been really hard realizing that my parents were decent people and good parents to ME, but as they got older, they became worse parents. The parents they were to my baby brother (15 years younger than me) was horrific. And, really, they turned my sister into a monster.

Astariel

I would argue that the people actually doing the genocide are the worst of all.

Beck Chonigman

...I see we're going with "pretending we're not soaked in blood by refusing to prevent objectively worse evils."

So, Carla's dad is Hank Scorpio, right?
