they don't care how many books you read now

Andrea Andrew

Good old Robin. She seems like the star of another story.

Sajuuk-Khar

On Robin’s inner thigh she has in sharpie: CALL NOW! 1-900-490-FREAK

Rob McBobson

I'm gonna be honest: There's nothing wrong in itself with "in medias res" which I think is Danish for "starting a story when the story's already started", but I think this one would have benefited from a lead-in strip or something similar. I feel a bit confused about where they are at the moment.

Fart Captor

I'm going to enjoy watching Raidah trying and failing to gain literally anything from this

Logibear

"Didn't you listen to me at all?"

Logibear

"I wish I could listen to you less, that's the same thing right?"

Jamie (QueenofSodor)

has raidah just been hanging out at robin's place all day? feels odd to cut back to something that feels like it'd come immediately after the last strip these two were in after like, a month ago

jafortee

I heard “Leslie cares about me”, damn right she does

Maude Reads Things

Who wants to place a bet on whether or not Raidah murders her herself by the end of the day?

Harold

@Rob McBobson: There *was* a lead-in strip: https://www.dumbingofage.com/comic/assistme/ You're forgiven for not remembering, since a) it was a stand-alone strip, and only half of one at that, and b) a LOT has happened since then. It's been a hell of a day.

Harold

@Fart Captor: In panel 3, we can almost literally *see* the beginning of a human brain breaking

Rob McBobson

Also, could somebody explain which part of this strip it is that "they don't care how many books you read now" refers to? I don't get it.

Lazuli

but then who will leslie begrudgingly be friends with?

Tessea

And now a break from the Rutten Drama (tm). And can Raidah stop being awful for a little while? As a treat? She needs some Robin lessons to stop being so uptight all the time.

Tessea

I'm guessing it's referring to the police not caring if you're educated? That's the only sense I've made of it so far. n.n;

Rob McBobson

@Harold: Thanks! I wonder if this means that the comic's storytelling timeline is less than 100% straightforward and this strip is meant to follow right after the one you linked, or if, like Jamie (Queen of Sodor suggested, these two women have been hanging around with each other for a while since the last time we saw them.

C.T. Phipps

I mean is she being unreasonable that Robin has been ignoring her going to elaborate lengths to get her unjust exile overturned?

Kazo

You know, all this would be worth it if Raidah got an aneurysm from all this.

C.T. Phipps

Raidah wants Robin to take the fact she's been kicked off campus for a protest seriously. But Robin doesn't care as she's rich and only took this job to be close to Leslie.

Tessea

She's rich? When did that get established? (I need to start a reread soon)

Tessea

Not at all, but her attitude about people in general needs to have it's oil changed.

Astariel

Aw, Robin cares about Leslie.

Sajuuk-Khar

I do think that severing the Carla plot thread there and letting its impact marinate is the right move, but this is a little abrupt, yeah. On the other hand, better than going back to the beloved new couple, because as much as I love em we can leave them alone for the moment

Jamie (QueenofSodor)

oh no, i think cutting off the Carla thread was fine! it's the fact that this strip reads like it's supposed to come right after (checks archive...) "Assist me" (www.dumbingofage.com/comic/assistme/) despite that having run a month ago! i feel like this strip probably needed to be there rather than here.

5099 5618 v2.0

Trying so hard to do the right thing, here....

Gale Tazzin

she might accidentally make a friend who provides her with nothing

Frey

Y’know, as someone who had two aneurysms, I agree. Raidah might learn some perspective from it

Andy Janson

I think it's about the Pizza Hut BOOK IT! program where you could get free pizza for reading in Elementary School. But I could be completely wrong.

Shane Wegner

Team Rocket thinks they’re going to get that Pikachu!

Shane Wegner

Caring more about other peoples’ situations than they do is a recipe for frustration.

Dan Rabin

I like Robin's stance in the first three panels, shrinking away from Raidah, but actually letting her handle her arm. And the faces!

T Campbell

Not long ago, I gave myself the assignment of bringing likability to one of the least likable characters I've ever followed (it was partly for a lark, but I'll probably share it eventually). It got me thinking about what techniques you'd use to "rescue" a character like that. (I know it's subjective, Raidah has her fans and David likes her, but still, you follow me.) Raidah is still a really hard sell for me, but if you want to generate some sympathy for her, this is not a bad way to do it.

Packy Anderson

I don't see any danishes in the strip, so I'm confused. I see some "in the middle of things", but it's not the middle of a danish.

Packy Anderson

Her own story. Where, instead of being a congresswoman, she worked at a toy store. Willis, you should explore that!

Packy Anderson

I heard "I care about Leslie, and refuse to leave her behind".

Harold

@Packy Anderson: I don't doubt that Robin cares about Leslie, but I'm also hearing, "If I help Leslie maybe she'll finally feel the same way about me that I do about her."

C.T. Phipps

Robin was said to have like several houses. Also, she had only been a GOP politician for money, breaking down when confronted her votes had real consequences when people asked her about it.

C.T. Phipps

An easy way to do it would be to have Raidah actually care about Bulmeria and the arrest of Robin or the smackdown of protestors. I think the best way to do Radiah is she's personally awful and a bad friend but has her heart on all the big subjects that the cast doesn't really care about.

FWIW ‘In media res’ is a Greek term dating back to their plays in ancient times. Much like ‘deus ex machina’. No baked goods needed.

Rob McBobson

Just for the record, I wanna state that I know what language "in medias res" is from, and was behaving jocularly. :)

Astariel

'In medias res' is Latin, not Greek.

Harold

"Jocularity? Not on my watch!" - Tony McHenry, probably

Rob McBobson

@Astariel: In that case, I guess I *thought* I knew what language "in medias res" is from.

David M Willis

"Where's Robin" has to happen before her class, and Leslie's class is concurrent. Also Robin's second bit with Raidah works better, dramatically, after Becky/Leslie/Carla's scene, since Becky's worries about Leslie's employment falls limp if Raidah/Robin might already be on the case. So, yeah, it's a little awkward, but I felt Raidah/Robin's second scene works better after that stretch of Carla strips.

Tim Starliper

Left or right? Do we have evidence of this? I, um, need to know. For a friend. Yeah. I need to know for a friend. Or rather my friend needs to know. That's what I am trying to say.

Sajuuk-Khar

I know a guy your friend should talk to! He’s Freddie Freaker, the dancing new sensation
