Before trying out the new INTERmission DLC, we decided to run through the entire Remake again with the new PS5 version. In addition to 60fps and better resolution, there are a few other small changes to this version including upgraded textures. We took this time to talk a lot about the Remake's story and some theories that have surfaced since we last played it.

Just watched this episode and your discussion about the whipsers and the meaning of death in FF7. And it's pretty interesting. About Remake you can say on one hand death doesn't matter anymore because it seems like everyone who should have died is alive again. Probably with the exception of the president. But to me it seems very obvious today that we will see the whole avalanche gang again. In some way. But on the other hand you can say death matters again. Because we all were aware of certain happenings and they just didn't turn out that way. And now we are thinking about it again and are more emotional invested then ever before in the last 20 years. So this whole whispers and fate thing ... as bad as it is... but it's these two sides of a coin. I'm still not sure how to feel about that. Have to say that the fact that we've seen Biggs in the ending again kinda ruined the whole plate fall scene for me, which really frustrates me. When I saw it at first I crieed my eyes out. When I watch it today I just feel this kick in my guts and I hate it. I rather skip those scenes to prevent me from start thinking about it. However, I can't say that I don't want to see them again. I love them and more storytime with them would be great. On the other hand I don't see a good reason for it plotwise. My guess is that they will stay in Midgar and we will see them again in the midgar raid. But I can't imagine any task that they are specifically needed for. Pretty much every task could be done from other side characters. Marle and Wymer could create a new avalanche cell or something. Your point that the whispers let look the party like straight up losers is a good point. Never thought it that way. Square Enix was constantly creating scenes that actually were meaningless and no one wanted to see. Just to show us that the whispers are there and what they doing. To be honest: Also for some other reasons I feel like they never thought this through. The explanations who and how someone can see them changed multiple times over the time. So in the end the execution was pretty bad. But what it did with us wasn't the worst thing. Caring about the fate of the characters again and theorizing about stuff. There is something they killed in us. The certainty of things we loved the most and the certainty of death. But they also revived something in us. The passion for FF7 as a new experience. Some people would say that is something that art should do. Other would ask is still art or just junk? To put this into perspective, I have to add that this is not the most important point of the game for me. Because to be honest, SE has always written stories where they eventually lost me because I didn't understand it anymore. These points exist in all Final Fantasy games. Except maybe in 9. But it was never that negative for me. The much more important point for me is that SE learns again what good Final Fantasy is and that they learn to listen to the fans. And that they found solutions that they might never have found without FF7R. This particularly applies to the combat system, character writing, and variety in the music. On all three counts, FF12, FF13 and FF15 were pretty disappointing for me and so far I have a feeling that FF16 will disappoint me there as well. Luckily, Intermission went in exactly the direction I'd like to see in modern Final Fantasy. I especially liked that they added a lot more japanese humor. And did more experiments with the music. And they add a lot to the wutai war. So I have good hope that the team around Kitase, Nomura, Hamaguchi and Nojima will learn from this and carry those lessons into future games. Like in an FFX sequel or another remake. Without FF7R and its achievements in the evolution of the brand, the odds were very high for me to completely lose passion for the franchise. Sorry for the wall of text. Hope you're doing well.
