HeyHeyJK

Again, I'm cheating by jumping ahead before watching the full reactions because I wanted to see your final thoughts, and they were perfect. As for watching "The Haunting of Bly Manor", the answer is yes. It definitely isn't as scary as THoHH, but it's so much fun seeing many of the "Flanafam" cast members in new roles, and it's another project that you don't expect to end the way it does since it becomes an amazing example of LBGTQ representation done right. But, there's also Mike's series "Midnight Mass" which is really great and super personal for him and it's got many of the same cast again and more specific horror elements. And, his latest, "The Fall of the House of Usher" - based on multiple Edgar Allen Poe stories - has the Flanafam back with a really relevant storyline and some pretty horrific moments. Watch 'em in whatever order you want, but you should definitely watch them all.

Jim

Additional shows by Flanagan you must see: midnight mass, fall of the house of usher- watch Bly manor too.

CJGardner

I definitely second this emotion!

Beard2134

"Midnight Mass" has even better writing (IMO) and amazing acting. I really hope you skip right to that series next in the Mike Flanagan universe.

BJ Stephens

It's good, but IMO nothing has beaten Hill House.

Stacey

easily the best tv show made. from writing to directing to acting, its all outstanding

Rich Cassou

I wouldn’t go into Bly Manor or Midnight Mass with the expectations of topping Hill House. This show is a masterpiece. I didn’t care for Bly Manor really and Midnight mass was ok but no Hill House. His other works are good though and absolutely worth checking out.

Wendy McIntyre

I have no idea why this show didn't win awards

Eric

I agree. Bly Manor wasn't nearly as good as Hill House. I enjoyed Midnight Mass and Fall of the House of Usher. I can definitely recommend that one but none of them get close to Hill House.

Eric

One thing you might have noticed (or not) is everytime it shows the red room there's a red item in the red room. Olivia was sitting in a red chair in her reading room. Steve was sitting on a red beanbag in his game room. Theo's dance room has the red wooden cabinet. Shirley's family room showed a red blanket on the sofa. Nellie's toy room has a red toy chest and Luke's treehouse has a red toy truck. This is the same for each of the characters dreams in this last episode. Steve is wearing a red cardigan in the dream. Luke is wearing red shoes. Shirley is wearing a red shirt and Theo's girlfriend is wearing red lingerie in Theo's dream. And then we have one of the last scenes showing Luke celebrating 2 years clean with a red cake and the room he's in is eerily similar to the red room.

Jim

Id say they're almost (if not) as good as each other

Byron

There are a handful of shows that are perfect. There are a smaller number that never ever get old, no matter how many times you watch them. But this show is special. It stands apart. Thank you for letting us see it through your eyes. That was special too.

Byron

I’ve heard that before and I think it’s on purpose (because why not?), and I think that’s a valid interpretation, but I hold on to the fact that there is no narrow window. The picture that’s framed behind them is comfortably squarish, squarish enough to signal that they’re not in the red room. And I will die on that hill because the alternative is too horrible to bear. 🙂

Byron

I’d hold off on another series just to let this one settle for a while. There are other good series but not like this. I do recommend at some point, if not on here (it’s really not scary at all but then neither was Nosferatu) at least for yourself, watching the 1960s British film The Haunting. It is also an adaptation of the same book and while there are a lot of differences (this show really builds upon the original story a lot in all the best ways), that film served as inspiration for a lot of iconic elements in this show. You’ll recognize little (or not so little) details that ended up in this show and that makes for a really fun watch.

Katie

I think a lot of people (including myself) went into Bly Manor thinking it was going to be like Hill House with all of the jump scares and were disappointed when it didn't meet those expectations. I agree that it's not quite meeting the same caliber, but still a beautiful story that breaks my heart every time.

Katie

I'm so glad you watched this! It truly is a masterpiece of television and your reactions were so good. The first time I watched this show was incredible. I related so much to Steve, being the oldest child in the family, siblings that are addicts and deal with mood disorders, parents that you feel distant from. All of the anger and detachment and scorn and guilt and shame, I know so many people think he's a huge dick (and he is) but personally I never felt more connected to a character. Please react to Bly Manor! It's definitely not very spooky, but it's a beautiful and heartbreaking story still worth a watch.

Rich Cassou

See and I didn’t really feel that connected to the main character or her story. I look at effort levels between the shows and it seemed like Bly manor was phoned in a bit. I had no trouble with the acting performances in Bly manor but the writing and creative choices are what put me off. One of the most annoying things was the reuse of the score from hill house which is literally begging audiences to compare the two shows or treat Bly manor like a sequel. The lack of scares was also annoying. I expected a drop off from Hill House as it’s (in my opinion one of the greatest shows ever made) but I found Bly Manor to be a real let down and I really wanted to like it. Oh well I have liked a lot of Mike Flannigan’s work they can’t all be great though.

Taylor L

this show is so special… the last episode always makes me cry so much!! beautiful. bly manor, midnight mass, and the fall of the house of usher are all great too!

bäckereikatze

I’m really glad you enjoyed this! I really enjoyed rewatching it, the writing is so beautifully and lovingly done, all of the relationships and even the haunting, how it actually works, and what it means for the characters and story. Not to mention the incredible film making and performances across the board. There is a time and place for simpler entertainment, but this is one of the bars for good storytelling, not just horror, definitely. Nellie’s conversation with everyone in the Red Room still makes me tear up. My one major criticism is the ending though. Mike Flanagan has gone on record saying he changed the ending after starting the show with a much more tragic one in mind, and while I love that and seeing the characters survive and change for the better, it’s not as tight as the rest of the show, particularly the trying to frame dying in Hill House more positively in the last twenty minutes of the last episode. Still, what a ride, and worth it. It’s easy to imagine there’s a good ending for everyone after the credits roll, even Olivia, now that she has Nellie and Hugh to ground her. I highly recommend The Haunting of Bly Manor, and would really enjoy seeing your reaction to it after seeing how much you enjoyed the Haunting of Hill House. I actually enjoyed Bly Manor more than Hill House, and would also say it’s the better show. It’s not a sequel but it very much feels like the team’s successor to The Haunting of Hill House.

Eddie Perkins

Wow. that was some fantastic acting and writing. This also wasn't what I expected.

Katie

That's a very fair assessment. I read an interview with Flanagan where he said that working on Hill House became incredibly unenjoyable for him to work on because of just how intricate it all became, especially from a production standpoint, and that we were never going to get another project like that from him again. It makes sense that the rest of his work seems a bit low effort compared to Hill House. I just try to enjoy the rest of his stuff for what it is.

BubblyRainbows

Some people I know have said that "The Haunting of Bly Manor" is even better than this show. Most of my friends are shocked I'm not one of them. I would say Bly Manor is worth checking out, but for me, it's not on the level of "The Haunting of Hill House." This series is amazing, and I never get tired of watching new people experience it. It's really something else. I watched this for the first time, "The Haunting of Bly Manor," "Arcane," and "True Detective Season One" all in the space of about a month, and let me say, those are four amazing pieces of writing, cinematography, and acting. Unfortunately, "Arcane" isn't a horror show and doesn't really fit in on your channel, which makes me sad (an argument could be made for "True Detective" to be considered suspense/thriller type horror, but try as I might, I can't justify "Arcane" being on a horror channel. I think you should definitely consider doing another horror series for your channel. There are a ton of amazing horror movies out there, but there are some great horror series too! Whatever you choose to react to next, I'm here for it! ✌️🤓

Jesse Williamson

I would recommend Bly Manor for sure, but I wouldn't go into it thinking "Hill House 2" or you'll be disappointed.

Absoluti0n

I'll echo what other people have said in that you should absolutely react to Bly Manor, but don't go in expecting another Hill House (because it set the bar at perfect). That being said, I still love Bly Manor almost as much as Hill House. It's less "scary," but more "creepy" in a gothic sort of way. And the strong emotional core carries over from Hill House as well. Hill House, Bly Manor, and Midnight Mass are all masterpieces as far as I'm concerned.

HeyHeyJK

I think I brought this up after an earlier episode reaction but, not that you've finished the series, I highly recommend the original 1962 film, "The Haunting", which was the first film adaptation of Shirley Jackson's novel. It's still my favorite haunted house film and scares the shite out of me every time I watch it. You'll see what a great job Mike Flanagan and crew did to respect the original source material - keeping many character names, set pieces, etc. - while adding in the expanded plot of family trauma and grief. Either way, your reactions were perfect to a damn near perfect TV series and I loved watching the full-length episodes again with you.

Ryan Thomas

Encouragement: Either read the novel or listen to the audio book of "The Haunting of Hill House" by Shirley Jackson. I greatly enjoyed listening to an upload on YouTube, the reading by David Warner. Series viewers will notice in the novel the inclusion of stones falling from the sky, the insistence on a cup of stars, phantom hands, and shared character names.

Ryan Thomas

"It's backwards suddenly, it's different". Your observation skills are stellar, Kat! What begins as a sweeping view of a hotel room with two beds cuts to a hotel room with only one big bed. The inconsistency adds to the break from reality.

Ana Fox

It's beautiful to see others be this emotionally impacted by this terrific story. It was extraordinarily done. I have seen it so many times, but you made me cry, too.

Chris Morgan

I'm of the camp that thinks Flanagan made an almost perfect show with this one and nothing he's done in TV since has quite reached its level. Bly Manor has a lot of the same actors and has some great emotional moments but it didn't really work for me. Midnight Mass has some great emotional punch but I started to notice when the characters are monologuing and it felt like the writer was talking instead of the characters some times. House of Usher was fairly forgettable but well made. The Midnight Club is probably his second or third best (depending on where you put Midnight Mass) but that one didn't get renewed so it has some loose ends in it. I would recommend his film Hush which stars Theo's actress and the original 1960s version of The Haunting which is based on the same material as this show. But Flanagan set the bar so high with this that it's hard for me to pick one better as much as I like to watch whatever he does. Great reaction. Great show.

PurpleAfterglow

Hope you continue down the Flanagan rabbit hole. Midnight Mass, Bly Manor, Fall of the House of Usher,... all amazing and have such rich story lines and meaning. Love the reaction vids.

Nowhere Man

The beginning of this episode makes you wonder how the writers have so much hostility toward writers.
