This was JUST AS MUCH OF A TREAT as I knew it would be!!!! There is a version on Amazon that has a longer Mamushka dance scene, so if yours gets out of sync around then, you might be watching the extended version!!

Now this was a surprise! I love this film and it's sequel Addams Family Values. This is actually based on a classic TV show that aired from 1964-1966. I came across that show through Nik-at-Nite growing up in the 90s. Some trivia from both the show and this film: In The Addams Family (1964), Uncle Fester was Morticia's mother's uncle, and his surname is unknown. (It is occasionally implied that he only has one name.) In this movie and most subsequent interpretations of the same character, he is Gomez' brother, Fester Addams. On The Addams Family (1964), the Addamses had a pet lion named Kitty. Though Kitty doesn't appear in this movie, Gomez can be heard cracking a whip and saying, "Down, Kitty!" as a roar is heard when he goes to the vault early on. After the movie premiered children would frequently recognize Raul Julia as Gomez Addams out in public, which according to him, always brought a smile to his face. Julia stated that Gomez Addams was by far his favorite role, and his family said this recognition was especially meaningful to him in the final months of his life because he loved performing for children and making them happy whenever the opportunity presented itself.

This is a nice surprise and such a fun movie. It's probably the best movie that's an adaptation of a TV show. The best thing about it is the family, they are so likable and charming. Despite them constantly trying to kill each other and talk about them getting hurt, they do genuinely love each other and are a sweet family. It's also just a great kids movie and a great way for kids to get into horror. Great reaction.

With Halloween coming up, another kids horror movie I'd recommend is Ernest Scared Stupid. While it's technically a kids movie, I also kinda consider it a horror movie because of how dark it is at times. It's also one of the best movies set around Halloween. It's literally the first thing I watch when october starts. It's a perfect mix of spooks, laughs, and great creature effects.

The next one, Addams Family Values, is a lot of the same (but in a good way), with the same cast. There are some FANTASTIC jokes in the next one that have become memes. It's also (funnily enough) a Thanksgiving movie. So if you give it a few weeks, it'll be the right season for it.

Ha ha, great to see you smiling again Kat after The Strangers Chapter 1 !! Love these film series sss, but must admit i preferred The Munsters, watching the original black and white series re-runs as a kid. The Thing is just The Thing, just a hand that watches the family and is, er, 'armless !! Love Uncle Fester's hair ! Shaven, just like mine, ahem....The German word PinderSchloss translates to castle, lock or bolt in English....so now we know....

Thing’s hand is from a Canadian magician named Christopher Hart, so now that I remember because I watched the credits his limb hand is also in a Horror/Comedy film called Idle Hands from 1999. So you’ve got Adams Family Values & Idle Hands. Are those made from real Girl Scouts? 😄 that’s the best from Wednesday.

Does Kat have a Letterboxd?

This was great fun! Addams and family values are my favorite Halloween movies although if I’m honest, I could watch them anytime of year gladly.

Love this movie. Definitely a fave from when I was a kid and it's always fun to re-visit. Because you asked in the video: Charles Addams created the characters for The New Yorker in the 1930s (the opening scene of the movie with the cauldron is actually taken from one of the cartoon panels)...he would draw regular cartoons for the magazine and it was later turned into a sitcom in the 1960s. I guess Charles Addams based the appearance of Morticia on his wife. And Wednesday got her name from and old poem...where it basically gives the significance of when a baby was born. "Wednesday's child is full of woe, Thursday's child has long to go" etc. And the casting for this movie is beyond perfection. I love how Raul Julia and Anjelica Huston balance each other...him with his almost manic energy, and her with her cool, mysterious vibe. And their chemistry was off the charts. Raul Julia was so incredibly talented, and he passed away way too soon, not long after the second Addams Family movie came out (which you should check out!), and Anjelica Huston was born to play Morticia...seriously, look up pictures of her mother and you'll see it's in her DNA.
