K, Zachary

So this the episode where they tried to replicate The Thing We are actually in Breckenridge Colorado ready to go skiing. Enjoy your time off Kat!!

Owen Kosik

Yes, all timer right here

I don't recall this receiving any backlash, but it's also worth pointing out that The Thing was a critical and commercial failure when it was released. It bombed so badly that John Carpenter basically could no longer get any backing from major studios for the rest of his career. It really wasn't until the 2000s that it finally started to gain the appreciation it deserves. Also, you probably recognized Xander Berkeley from Candyman.

Bit of a glitch at 46:35 there, as well at 46:51, no idea what's going on with that.

Taco Wolf

I noticed that too, thought it was my internet being janky

No I reloaded the page a couple of times to make sure. It also happened a little last week if I remember right. If you look at last week's episode, do you see a glitch at 16:20? If we're both seeing it, it's on Kat's end, not ours.

Kris Jensen

Scully: "That same Thing was in Richter's blood". The production designer, Graeme Murray, also worked on The Thing. Also remember, The Thing was a remake (The Thing from Another World) - and the original was based on a novel (Who Goes There?).

Robert Raszkowski

Mr Freeze (Arnold voice): "Do you know what killed the dinosaurs? The ice age" Ice to meet You... It is a bit chilly here... Xander Berkeley - oh I dunno - You maybe recognize him from: Candyman? Terminator 2? Walking Dead? Take Your pick KAT. :D Now - why did You "froze" two times at the end??? o0 XD

To add to some of the comments below: This episode aired on network TV about 11 years after the movie, The Thing, was released. And, as mentioned below, there weren’t a lot of people that had seen the movie at the time of this airing. So, given that, I’m pretty sure that Chris Carter felt he was, if nothing else, giving John Carpenter’s movie the attention it deserved. It wasn’t until the 2000s that the movie achieved cult status and was rightfully appreciated.

I love this episode! I have been enjoying this rewatch so much!

Great as always, Kat! Loved it! My memory at the time is that this was a very popular episode, since it wasn't a straight up copy, but was just a variation on a great theme. It was still very well done, and very tense.

Katie Jackson

That guy played an ass in everything I've ever seen him in 😂

I've seen enough evil Ice lately. As soon as it started, you could see it was a take on The Thing.

All of these stories (Carpenter's The Thing, this episode an dozens more) are inspired by a short story by John C. Campbell called "Who Goes there." Worth reading! It had a lot of influence culturally.

Kenny bania from Seinfeld?! And the stepdad from T2??

'Ice' is still considered one of the best episodes of the series. It was an early establishing point... capturing more appeal from viewers & critics. Personally, I'm a sucker for isolated bottle episodes. Especially stranded in the tundra. And this episode really delivers on the tension and paranoia. This one really established the kind of quality the XFs was capable of. (Apologies for ende on a preposition.)

The Thing on a smaller budget (and without the _excellent_ Rob Bottin). Would a bullet stop a shapeshifter? Did the Norwegian in the movie _really_ miss the dog? The guy who asked th pilot for his credentials was in Terminator 2 and Candyman.
