Apollo 13? Wow Kat you surprise again.

Frankie Crews

Hi Kat! For info on how they accomplished many of the weightless scenes, lookup videos of the Vomit Comet.

Desiree Mclaughlin

Apollo 13 is one of my favorites. It’s one of those movies that, even though I know how it ends, I cry every damn time! 🥹

100 % true Story. it's funny because I know the whole Apollo 13 drama and am still thanks to Hollywood magic had me sitting at the edge of my Seat. Rest in peace Mr. Bill Paxon.

Matt Blanchette

Hey! :-O This isn't a horror movie at all! j/k

Wally Hartshorn

I've read is that this movie is very accurate in terms of the events, but that it added drama in terms of the astronauts expressing emotion, etc. Someone said that they talked like a group of accountants discussing a particularly tricky tax return. 🙂 That is not to say that it was any less dangerous than the movie depicted. Actually, they had to overcome even more challenges than the movie showed. They were simply calm and focused while doing so. The scenes involving "zero G" were shot in the so-called "Vomit Comet", a modified KC-135 cargo jet. It would fly in parabolic arcs, giving them about 25 seconds of weightlessness within the set of the spacecraft interior that they loaded into the cargo hold. They flew over 600 of these parabolic arcs to get all of the footage they needed. Nearly every time someone reacts to "Apollo 13" or "The Right Stuff", they say how interesting space is. I believe they are sincere, yet I've never been able to convince anyone to react to the HBO miniseries "From the Earth to the Moon". Please be the first! If you truly want to learn about the Apollo program, you owe it to yourself to watch this wonderful 12-episode docudrama hosted (and co-produced) by Tom Hanks, with an excellent cast, gripping stories, great writing, and A+ production quality. Plus, when you are done, you will know more about spaceflight than 99% of the population!

This was all based on a true story

Desiree Mclaughlin

Same! It’s a Wonderful Life is another favorite of mine 😁

Loved this reaction. If you’re interested in more NASA-related content, Tom Hanks produced a mini series for HBO back in the late 90s, a couple years after Apollo 13 came out. It’s called From the Earth to the Moon, and it chronicles all the Apollo missions and astronauts involved. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen it but I remember it being really engaging. Also, if you haven’t seen The Martian that gives me a lot of the same feelings this does, although it’s obviously fiction.

As soon as I saw the YT upload I knew you were gonna have a blast with this one.

Oh yes, its a true story. Even that square peg round hole problem that they had to fix. The Lunar Module (LM), which became the crew’s lifeboat, used round lithium hydroxide canisters, but the Command Module (CM) had square canisters. So they put their heads together, worked the problem and came up with a solution.

God puts everyone where they need to be…..

Probably one of the most accurately retold true stories. Much of the dialog came directly from recordings of the radio traffic. And definitely look up how they did the weightless scenes.

Ally

"Someone's at the door" LOL

Ally

You should watch Hidden Figures (true story as well)

Matt Blanchette

Hang on! :-o You're the director Gary Trousdale!

Eddie Perkins

I was only nine, but I remember all of this as if it were yesterday. Movies based on true stories and events are always the best.

Worth mentioning- The real Jim Lovell plays a small part in the movie, as the Captain of the USS Iwo Jima, the US Navy ship that retrieves the Apollo 13 astronauts after their splashdown in the ocean. He shakes Tom Hanks' hand, and has the longest (unheard) conversation with Hanks of anyone else seen during Hanks' closing narration. Also, the narration in the beginning about the details of the Apollo 1 fire recount an actual historical event, where three astronauts were killed in a fire during a test of the Apollo capsule. The subsequent redesign of the escape hatch Hanks describes to his character's son is an actual result of redesigns to the spacecraft after the tragic fire. America's path to space was a very, very bumpy one. The USSR had a significant head-start, and was in the lead for roughly the first half of the "Space Race." If you're interested in learning more about the tumultuous times behind the scenes of the Space Race, you should check out the movie "The Right Stuff", the HBO series (that others here have mentioned) "From the Earth to the Moon," and a four-part documentary that PBS made in the 1980s called "Spaceflight" (which I believe is easy to find on YouTube).

Kat, this was such a fun reaction. That you didn’t know about the events made it even better. And for another great Tom Hanks film based on a true story involving a harrowing ordeal, you should react to Captain Phillips. It had 6 Oscar nominations, if that tips the scale. 😉

The moment the had the burst disc event and they all jumped, you did to... Kevin Bacon says "What was that!!", and you said "Someone's at the door!" I'm laughing as I type this. That totally cracked me up!! I'm still laughing! That's gonna last a long time! Thank you. I liked what Mary Cherry did in her reaction to this movie. When the tank blows after the stir, and everything is blowing apart, she cut to a video snippet of that Phil Swift guy slapping the Flex Seal tape on that clear water tank. That was priceless!! I had a great time here. Thank you!
