DDT was actually banned because it was causing Bald Eagles to have thin egg shells. They started to became Endangered. Once DDT was stopped their species recovered.

Michael Gehrman

Great! Love these! The car on the TV was OJ Simpon; and the bearded guy was Charles Manson. The mechanic was killed by an oil can spout.

The ending on this one is tricky. Was there actually a secret operation going on where some nefarious part of the evil shadow government was spraying people with a phobia drug, and then manipulated screens to drive people to kill? Or was the phobia effect of the helicopter spraying unintended, and everyone just got their phobias amped out of control by repeated exposure without any sort of overarching conspiracy? The repeated link of messages through screens across all of the victims driven to kill would seem to prove the conspiracy theory, but... since Mulder's own phobia is a shadowy, all-controlling secret government, was the message on his cell phone at the end of the episode just an effect of his one-time dosing with a paranoia-inducing pesticide? Good times. DDT and other chemical dosings of communities actually did happen. In the 50s and 60s there were a lot of miracle chemicals that turned out to be really, really bad for humans that were sprayed all over everything, much to people's later detriment. And as far as mind control experiments go, it eventually came out in the 80s and 90s that the CIA spent a good chunk of the 60s and 70s micro- & macro-dosing people with stuff like LSD, mostly just to see what would happen, in the vague hope of finding legitimate mind control drugs. So far as we know, that never actually went anywhere, and there's no such thing as a for-real mind control drug or brainwashing serum. William Sanderson (Ed the fired mailman) was another big get for the young series; he crops up in a lot of stuff (most recently on the channel in this week's watch of Blade Runner!) and always turns in a great performance. He also does a lot of voice acting, so you're bound to have heard him somewhere. This episode aired just a few weeks after OJ Simpson's nationally televised car chase, so get ready for a lot of OJ jokes in the next season or two (the OJ trial was inescapable back in the day).

Speaking as someone who watched X-Files week by week as it was first aired, and looked up all the things they talked about, I can tell you that every time you say "Is that true?" with incredulity in your voice.... yeah. It's true. In this episode, in past episodes, and in future episodes. The internet was still new (dial up), but we still suddenly found ourselves with the ability to look up information quickly and easily. (Well, quickly and easily for the time, nothing compared to now). And many X-Files people spend too much time fact checking things they said. Ha.

I can't see he actor with the phobia of blood without thinking of Larry of Larry, Darryl, and Darryl fame. And if you know who that is, then you are OLD. Just like me :D

I’m just here to see if Kat dances to the into music. I come here for the whistle dance.

Fish_Kungfu

He’s also played as J.F. Sebastian in the first Blade Runner.

Michael clark

There was no one controlling them. They just sat the words as part of their paranoia….

Who Are These People

4:22 "Remember how I called the papercut?" Weird thing Kat- I rewound your reaction and the 2nd time you didn't.

Who Are These People

29:35 The woman Mulder glimpsed in the Gym ad that was playing when he was having the psychotic episode was David's rl wife Tea Leoni. She'll show up in a surprising guest role later in the series.

Super late to this, but subliminal messaging is true and proven and it's taught for marketing/advertising. Have a cousin and a few friends that went to school for design/advertising and one of the first things they are taught in marketing is "sex sells" and how to subtly use that in ads without it being obvious.

Robert Raszkowski

Hey KAT - did You knew that Metallica first album title was "Kill ’Em All"? By the way - that main actor - J. F. Sebastian... "Bladerunner" ;) "Just do it"... isn't that the Nike slogan?? Subliminal messaging??

RJ Inkglider

Sharp eyed viewers will recognize JF Sebastian from Blade Runner.

RJ Inkglider

How did that microwave have an apostrophe for "KILL 'EM BOTH"? Lol.

Walter Crockett

Yeah I don't think that was Tea, I know she shows up in the show later. They were married in 1997 and if I remember correctly they were married very soon after they first started dating.

This was the one with Ashlyn Gere. She played Bonnie McRoberts (the one that attacks Mulder with a knife) She was a famous Porn Star who did a lot of mainstream content as well, which was rare back then and even today. She is actually really good in this episode.
