A great reaction and a great pick! I still strongly suggest Wolf in the Fold and Specter of the Gun. This was brilliant writing far ahead of its time.

I'm glad you watched this one, the Vulcan Mind Meld is a pretty core part of star trek

I'm starting to think Kat's whole channel is secretly about how much of a foodie she is! A few people have mentioned before what happened with the original pilot and the Pike character in the comments on Kat's other Trek reactions, but the short version is that NBC liked the concept but not quite the execution of the first pilot.  Execs famously  called it "too cerebral," and wanted to make it have more action and appeal to non-sci-fi fans.  By the time the production had written a new script and were ready to shoot the second pilot, the actor who played Pike, Jeffrey Hunter, was no longer available.  The captain character was re-written and re-cast with Shatner as Kirk, and the rest is history. The two phaser types are related.  The Phaser 1 prop (the electric shaver, as Kat called it) is the lower-powered version, and the Phaser 2 is basically the Phaser 1 inserted into a cradle with a pistol grip attached, giving it more power and range.  Phaser 3 is the "vacuum cleaner" rifle that Kat loves from "Where No Man Has Gone Before," which has even more power and range. Fun design elements that help with the show (and later the franchise)'s world-building. This episode is noteworthy for a few things:  IIRC, it's the first time we see a Vulcan mind-meld, the first time McCoy does his "I'm a doctor, not a (blank)" catchphrase, and one of the few times in the original series where we hardly see the Enterprise.  The episode's core message of "we don't have to destroy everything different from us" coupled with a believable, sympathetic creature that was so radically alien for a 1960s TV show became a core tenet of the franchise.  Great episode.

I am starting to believe that by watching so many Horror/Sci-fi Films that you are hitting the Plot lines dead on. I upon first viewing had no idea that those were Eggs with the Mother Alien guarding them. I am impressed and wonder if you indeed wrote some of these Scripts or maybe you missed your calling as a Writer. Long live and Prosper Kat.

Poor Schmitters, burnt to Schmitter-eeens....

I think this is the first one that you've watched where Dr. McCoy says his famous "I'm a doctor, not a ____" line. It's a meme for how often they have him doing that bit in the show :D Not sure if it made it on your list or not, but episode 21 from this season, titled "The Return of the Archons" is pretty decent and has a few themes that are relevant to a couple of movies that you've watched on the channel. Also a cameo from a young Sid Haig!

Minor counterpoint: the first time we see the mind-meld is quite a bit earlier in the series - "Dagger of the Mind." I really hope Kat does that one on this channel; no spoilers, but it's a great one.

Kat, if you're ever in the neighborhood, I'll buy you a thin-crust pizza with Italian sausage and extra cheese - your choice on New York style, or Midwest tavern-style. But I won't make the mistake of getting between you and the pizza. "Kat considers eating a possibly sentient alien life form because it looks tasty as hell" was not on my bingo card for today, but...yeah, it's a take. And as Trek takes go, that one's at least understandable; the Horta DOES look like a huge sausage pizza. Lord knows there are weirder takes. Somebody already beat me to the "this is the first appearance of McCoy's 'Dammit Jim, I'm a DOCTOR, not a ___________" line. It was kind of a hot meme for awhile, too, with people sticking in the wildest nouns they could think of. Hell, even Saturday Night Live poked at it once.

BrakYeller

You're absolutely right! I forgot about Dagger of the Mind. It is a good one!

Who Are These People

It's weird this one wasn't on the polls or recommended, it's considered a top 10 episode.

Somehow I’ve never sat and watched this full episode before now. Good pick!

It''s Kat aware of the significance of shirt color in TOS? :D
