“When in Rome” means to follow the customs of a place you are visiting.

Toxic Ghost

There are two movies: the first is X-Files Fight the Future which takes place directly after season 5, and I Want to Believe, after season 9 —which I believe there is work to release the directors cut of soon so perhaps you’ll be able to see it!

Code Monkey

This episode reminds me very much of a Wes Craven movie called "The Serpent and the Rainbow" from 1988 that would be awesome for you to watch. I've not seen anyone else react to it. From what I recall it's a very creepy take on zombies.

My mom (who is THE BIGGEST original X-Files fan and the reason I love it so much) made a good point: the new version isn't going to have the same impact regardless of how they make it. The government already admitted they know about UFOs, we know about MK Ultra, we know a super-rich pedophile cabal exists, we know that government conspiracies are a matter of fact, so it's not gonna hit the same way it did in the 90s. What made it fun was that this show was all fringe nonsense in the 90s, now it's just a depressing reminder of reality lol

Another great reaction to another great episode! Politically, this episode was about 30 years ahead of its time. The phrase in question is "When in Rome, do as the Romans do." The meaning is advice as to when travelling to a place, live as the people do there and follow their customs. The phrase is believed to date back to approximately 383 AD when St Augustine, who was from Africa, was offered a job in Milan. At the time, many of Christianity’s customs and observances were not settled into an international pattern, and Augustine was unsure of when to fast. Aurelius Ambrosius, the Bishop Ambrose of Milan – advised him: “When you’re in Rome, do as the Romans do." The movies are very good, and should not be missed. Unfortunately, the reboot is a mess.

there's two movies and a third on the way! wow

Who Are These People

Huh, I've never heard that before. I still don't quite understand it.

Who Are These People

"Cutest kid ever!" she says every. single. time. They can't all be the cutest, can they?

Who Are These People

I can't see how a new X-Files can capture the feeling of there being something really "unknown" going on. A new 'Scully' would be a politically polarizing character and a new 'Mulder' would have to be an anti-vax quack.

Fun fact: The original working title of The X-Files was "Flashlight Beams in the Dark... Will they or won't they" but they changed it right before it started to air.

Oh, man, I don't know if Kat is ready for "The Serpent & The Rainbow"... as I recall it was pretty intense. I should go back and re-watch that one, it's been a while.

Fun fact about the flashlights in the X-Files: they had to use some VERY intense and powerful lights to get the exact kind of "beam of light" effect that the show is known (and sometimes parodied) for. According to the actors, they were very heavy & hot, and frequently had to be rigged with wiring running down their sleeves to power packs concealed beneath coats and other clothing... they weren't really flashlights, they were essentially portable stage lighting dressed up to look like military grade searchlights. Less of an issue with today's smaller, more powerful LEDs, though LEDs of similar strength would look completely different on camera. Honestly, this show does so much brilliant work with lighting that it helped redefine what could be done on TV at the time. The Wade Davis mentioned in the show (by Mulder) wrote a famous book about Haitian voodoo titled "The Serpent & The Rainbow" that was adapted into a very effectively creepy movie by Wes Craven, which I'm kind of on the fence about recommending because it's very good but I personally found it to be A LOT on the stress meter. There's very few movies that I can't watch alone, and that's one of them; your mileage may vary.

I don't know, I think there's still plenty of room to play there. At the very least, I'd watch the hell out of a post-disclosure X-Files where the agents have to uncover all the awful things that were wrought because of conspiracies that are still being hidden, and bring to justice all the awful people responsible for those evil deeds, set against the backdrop of a world still dealing with those disclosures. It's a completely different show from what the original was, but IDK if you're ever going to catch the lightning in a bottle of the original, for all the reasons already mentioned here. The show hit so perfectly because it spoke to and of the moment, you just have to find a way to do the same here and now, which is a very tall order but not necessarily impossible. I'd be willing to give it a chance, but also be very quick to abandon it if it doesn't hit right.

KAT - I do not believe in VooDoo but I sure love the Voodoo that You Do. :D

noooo I'm all caught up! now I have to wait for episodes :( i hate it here. But also I love it here. X-Files is one of those shows I wish I could watch for the first time all over again. Watching you watch for the first time is the next best thing. Thanks, Kat!
