Yo can’t wait to get home and watch this together! Woo! 🙌🏼

On disc, there's a commentary track with the voice of "Billy" throughout the entire film. I have yet to get up the nerve to watch it like that.

I love this film. It's one of my favorites. It's seminal. I saw it at the drive-in with a friend when it came out (you need to go to a drive-in!) and it scared the crap out of us. The guy on the phone is obviously Insane. Nevermind your Michael Myers' and Jason, they could teach yoga relaxation. This guy is REALLY nuts. And the film making is so good! The cinematography! And the acting! Olivia Hussey, the "final girl" starred in Franco Zefirreli's "Romeo and Juliet", Keir Dullea, her boyfriend, starred in "2001, A Space Odyssey", Margot Kidder, drunken Barb, was Lois Lane in the 1978 "Superman". And Andrea Martin is Andrea Martin. What I like best about it is that these aren't cartoon people in a cartoon setting. These are real people, and when they die there are real consequences. People are distraught, people grieve. They're not valueless cardboard, disposable bimbos. And the police are present and try their best, but to little avail. Oh, and BTW, that's exactly how you had to trace a phone call with those old electro-mechanical switching exchanges. It was filmed in Toronto, and the sorority house is still there and unchanged. The interiors were all on-site, there were no sets. It is a veeery Canadian movie. It's incredible to consider that Bob Clark, the director, also directed "Porkies" and "A Christmas Story". Before his sadly premature passing he said that John Carpenter admired the film and asked if he minded if he did a sort-of sequel taking place on Halloween. . .

This is one of my favorite films! It was so entertaining to watch along with you!

Kat, if you’re interested, the 2006 remake actually does offer a lot more backstory for the killer and gorier deaths. I’ve been crapping on that movie since it came out but realize now that it’s not that different from the original. So yeah, you might wanna give it a try.

I hadn't seen this one before, and it was excellent! Hooray for the ramble cut! I thought the end was more "tone reinforcement" than plot point - but maybe I'm wrong? That house felt like a co-star in the whole thing, sort of like a haunted house movie. ... It was nice to see Keir Dullea; he's one of those actors that pops up unexpectedly in things I'm watching. The Starlost (sci-fi series from the 70s) is a personal favorite, but I can only recommend it if you're already down with a Space 1999 / Silent Running sort of vibe. :)

Andrew Hussey

The main girl, Jess, Olivia Hussey is, I believe, a brit, she was in a bunch if things, the older 1990s TV miniseries of It, the 1968 I think it was black and white Romeo and juliet, 1977s Jesus of Nazareth, but I always remember her from this. Great, great film...not quite the "first" slasher but this one definitely set up all the tropes later used by Halloween, Friday the 13th and so on, I remember seeing it because my older sister rented it one year when I was maybe 7 or 8 around Christmas and it just scared the hell out of me...stuck with me ever since.

I’ll have to watch your reaction tonight. 😂 Been a bit busy. Glad you finally did this one. 😉

Anyone else find it hilarious that Bob Clark also directed A Christmas Story?

China Andronicus

We’re told that he only makes a phone call after killing someone, so the ending is intended to signal that Jess was just killed asleep in bed. 😭

Joseph Charles

Hockey—that’s the real horror of this movie.

Joseph Charles

Also, I just noticed that if this was made in 1974, it predates “Halloween” by four years! “Black Christmas” was ahead of its time.

The scene that starts at 0:24:42 (the scene at the Christmas party where Mr. Harrison calls his daughter, Clare, with Barb in the background drinking out of a bottle of champagne) uses a SPLIT DIOPTER. It allows the DP to keep both FOREGROUND and BACKGROUND SUBJECTS in focus at the same time, so they can perform together in real time, as opposed to it being an OPTICAL COMPOSITE. Because of the slower films speeds 50 years ago, along with the difficulty of lighting a scene with enough light to have proper DEPTH OF FIELD to hold both in focus, the SPLIT DIOPTER became a commonly used solution. Filmmakers of the '60s and '70s were big fans of its use, including William Friedkin and Martin Scorsese.

You need to watch the original, "When A Stranger Calls" with Carole Cane. Its the same premise, but even more intense, or at least thats what I think.
