Much has been said about that monologue. I saw the film in the theater and was appalled that it was much darker than the children's film the trailers made it out to be. In fact, this film, along with the second Indiana Jones movie, was responsible for the creation of PG-13. Spielberg (who was involved with both) suggested there should be a rating between PG and R. As for the monologue, the studio hated it and wanted it cut. Joe Dante was firm that it should stay in because, he argued, it was a microcosm of the film itself, with its mixture of horror and absurdity. Spielberg, as Executive Producer, stepped in and said he personally didn't like it, but that it was Dante's movie and his decision, so the studio relented. Along with everything else in this film, the sequel makes fun of it. With time it has become one of my favorite things. That, and how the mogwai (and gremlins) mutter fun things under their breath. In the classroom, the as yet unseen gremlin takes a bite of an apple and throws it back on the desk in disgust, exclaiming: "Traif!" Also, about that monologue, does everyone know that people can't fit in a chimney? A typical chimney flue is about one foot square, not even the skinniest person could fit in one, let alone in a bulky Santa costume and with presents. So either the girl is nuts and making this story up, or it's just part of the cartoonishness of the film in general (which is amplified by a factor of a million in the sequel!). By the way, "Mogwai" is Cantonese for "monster" or "demon".

So you definitely have to check out the sequel Gremlins 2: The New Batch. It's one of the best horror sequels, one of the best comedy sequels, and one of the best sequels in general. I love that it doesn't try to top the original and it just leans into being a live action cartoon comedy movie. I also love that it pokes fun at the original and in particular makes fun of the rules. It's one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. I think it'd make for a great reaction and it's definitely worth a watch.

The monolog was literally where I learned there wasn't a Santa as a child lol The sequel is just amazing, leans much further into the absurd comedy angle but I saw that one in theater and it's one of my favorite theater going experiences. Half the jokes went right over my head but I loved it all the same...

I’m so excited for this. I’ve been waiting for you to upload this video before watching this year. I agree with everyone else, Gremlins 2 is great too.

Kat, before 1990, the Dad/Santa monologue was sad and hearthbreaking. But ever since the sequel came out and referenced it, it gives me new emotions. That’s all I’ll say 😂

Gremlins 2 is a fever dream of a movie, and if you are ready to take that ride it can be just wacky fun. To give some context the director only agreed to do the movie if they let him do whatever he wanted, and he really pushed it.

Dante is the master of family horror comedies. Gremlins 2 is a psychotic comedy fever dream made by a director who had been badgered by the studio for years for a sequel, who had final cut, and didn't give a crap about the studio. It's completely different and completely wonderful. Joe Dante is a mensch and a genius. I have great respect for him using once-famous actors who had fallen from the spotlight and landed in obscurity. If one were to google the cast of a film like Gremlins, one would find half a dozen famous old actors and the great Warner cartoonist, Chuck Jones. Bless him for his humanity. Aside from the obvious Dante films, check out "The Hole" (2009).

Yum, Yum, that was Fun. I could go for some more. Did the evil Ruby Deagle remind anyone of Almira Gulch from The Wizard of Oz? All she needed was a bike or a broomstick. Merry Christmas everyone 🎄

What a classic and IMO great Christmas movie!

Glad you liked the score. Fun fact, Goldsmith did the score for Alien and The Omen as well.

The first time we see the convention for inventors, Spielberg passes in front of the telephones in some kind of small vehicle. Behind and to the right of the telephones is the famous time machine. The next time we see the convention as Rand is trying to call home, the time machine is gone and there are vapors and burns on the floor people are looking at. That was a cool detail.

I do hope you see part 2 someday its worth a watch. Some people disagree but I dare say its better!
