Risky Business (1983) a Cruise comedy, was done 3 years before Top Gun.

Bartleby

You want to see more of Val Kilmer (Ice Man) in a starring role? He is an exceptional actor. Check out arguably his greatest performance. “The Doors” (1991) Based on the true story of the legendary rock band. Val Kilmer plays Jim Morrison. And Dawn, this is a film along with “The Graduate” that you need to see before watching “Wayne’s World 2”

Bartleby

“Ice Dawn” What do you think of that? Viper the Top Gun flight instructor was played by Tom Skerritt. You saw him previously as the Captain of The Nostromo in the original “Alien”.

john ruddick

The next Tom Cruise movie you do should either be "Day's of Thunder" or "Jerry Maguire" both are great films. The latter will lead to "Any given Sunday" semidirectly.

Roddy Hutchinson

the outsiders and taps were a couple of Tom Cruise's earliest movies, newest Fighters cost about 90 million.

Matt O'Keefe

My dad never liked Tom Cruise. He thought he always seemed too cocky.

john ruddick

The funniest bit is when they talk about "having to follow him down below the hard deck". The hard deck is the simulated ground level which is raised for safety reasons so essentially he seems to say I crashed into the ground because the other guy did too lol

Louis Marzullo

No McFly has ever amounted to anything in the history of Top Gun flight school!

john ruddick

Oh and Mig is short for the Russian aircraft company "Mikoyan".

john ruddick

Same he's a bell end in reality I did security for him many years ago. And really short too.

Robert Inman

Also, usual fighter doctrine uses at least 2 planes at a time, a lead pilot in one and his wingman in the other. 2 seat aircraft of the type shown (F-14 Tomcat) has a pilot in front to fly the plane, and a weapons officer in back who manages the electronics and radar etc. e.g Maverick is pilot, Goose is weapons/electronics officer. This movie used real F14s for the good guys and sort of cheesy F-5 model aircraft for the bad guys. The second movie is much more up to date. As mentioned above the modern US equivalent (F-15EX) costs between 90 and 97 million dollars per plane.

Louis Marzullo

Lots of eye candy but Dawn would probably fancy Stephen Rea over all the pretty boys. Another essential part of her mystique!✨

Bill W

Louis- they're Jersey boys! They made Spandau Ballet millionaires for a 2nd time.

Bartleby

Tom Cruise’s two best performances. “Born on the Fourth of July” and “Interview With The Vampire”

Bill W

"Gael Force!" would look cool on a helmet. or "Doric The Explorer". 😀

Louis Marzullo

Ahhh, those guys! Yes. Well, guess that's not as bad as mixing up Larry Kirwan & Shane MacGowan! 😉

Bill W

Interview, Born, ..and I can't resist watching A Few Good Men. I always get sucked in whenever it's on. Louis, you don't think Dawn would like Armand?

Louis Marzullo

Hmm, not sure Bill. His character is kinda boring. But I do think she'd love saying "An-TON-io Ban-DER-as!!"

Chicago Artist Jon

The F-14 Tomcat cost about 38 million per plane in the 1990s. They built around 700. The carriers they took off and landed on cost around 10 Billion to build and a couple million dollars a day to operate. America spends around 850 Billion dollars a year on its military. Every year. And yes that is madness.

Louis Marzullo

It was the Babbitt brothers in Rain Man, Dawn. Charlie (Cruise) & Raymond (Hoffman). Not that you care at this point! 😄 And not to be confused with Billy Bibbitt or Lorena Bobbitt 😁

Chicago Artist Jon

I believe the wing man formation was developed in wwii when planes had fixed guns. If they had a plane attacking or trying to evade the 2 planes would fly in big figure 8s and eventually the enemy plane would be in front of someone’s guns. Not sure why they still use it today since the weapons systems are so much more advanced.

Chicago Artist Jon

I lived in San Diego for many years and use to drive past the topgun school on my way to work every day. So you might say that I’ve been on the 🎼 Highway to the Danger Zone! … but I never met Goose. Sadly he was already dead.

Matt O'Keefe

Well, when you are the financial saviour of a big cult. You are bound to think too much of yourself. I think he is a decent actor though. And which do you think sounds worse: a bell end or dick head?

Louis Marzullo

Dawn Marie pilot nickname: "Snacker" 🧀 And another (head) banger of an outro! 🤣 But what's this "family channel" crap?? How about "Sexy Saturdays" once a month? First up: "9 1/2 Weeks"!

john ruddick

Bell end lol he was very insistent on doing things that might have put himself in harms way. I had to sternly say no to him a few times thankfully he listened lol. I think he can be a great actor given the right role luckily he has made very good choices during his career. But he is best described as a bit of an odd ball. Lol

john ruddick

They still use it mainly to mitigate the chance of a weapons failure these days. But the tactics will change a lot depending on the mission. So not always.

Al

Goose - the GIR - 'guy in the rear'. Specifically, the weapons officer

Al

Better Tom Cruise movies: Jack Reacher, Oblivion, Edge of Tomorrow

Al

Dawn Marie, call sign "Banshee", A female spirit in Gaelic folklore whose appearance or wailing warns a family that one of them will soon die.

Al

Val Kilmer - check out "The Doors" and he plays an excellent Doc Holiday in Tombstone.

Alan Jones

Goose's wife was played by Meg Ryan, known for several big time 90s rom-coms, like When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle, and You've Got Mail, as well as a military film, Courage Under Fire. I thought you might recognize her, but I can't see that you've reacted to any of these films, though they are frequent choices in the reactor-verse at large. If you're ever up for a rom-com, try Sleepless in Seattle, my fave of these, though the others are worthy choices too.

Robert Inman

FWIW, traditionally a military pilot doesn't pick his call sign, his fellow pilots do. Sort of a right of passage as he becomes more than a trainee. Frequently picking a notable characteristic or event that is associated with that pilot. For example - Dawn could've been affectionately designated "Giggles" by her peers.

THK

After you have seen Top gun, now you ready for : HOT SHOTS - The mother of all Movies! :D you will like it.

Bill W

You're the first and only one to describe Hot Shots that way.

Bill W

I'm gonna be "that guy" and say technically banshee are Irish. (The X-Man too). Bean-Nighe would be the Scottish counterpart.

Bill W

Guy in Rear haha I would never guess thats what it stood for except as a joke. I love it. Learning!!

Bill W

Yeah, Louis, he doesn't do much, but he looks cool and has a cool name.

Bartleby

My hot take, the Hot Shots movies aren’t particularly funny or significant comedy movies that any reactor needs to see. They’re disposable flicks made to cash in on something else that was successful. That was all. There… I said it.

Robert Nelson

1. You have a lovely voice. 2. Watch Tombstone for more Val Kilmer.

Silentwolfie62

When an officer goes through flight school, it is given to them by their Fellow officers during flight school...

Silentwolfie62

When I was in the Navy, MiG was just another name for fighter jet. And yes, I was in the navy on an aircraft carrier, the USS America CV-66, from 1982 till 1984.

THK

it is not me. :D that is the official titel of the film. but you are right, every one say just Hot Shots.
