Woo-Hoo!! Can't wait to hear your young Vito impression 🤌The cow!! I'm already dying!!🤣

Louis Marzullo

Spit-take #1: "What's a Hyman Roth?" 😂 ("Hyman" with an "a")

Louis Marzullo

Ah Dawn, that was so good. Grazie. Wouldn't have minded the outro being as long as the reaction 😁 You looked edified but maybe more like you just had the best meal (or something else 😉) of your life! Some housekeeping: It was Roth who wanted Michael dead. Revenge for Moe Greene & also Roth not wanting to share power & 💰 with Michael (the "big deal" was a partnership with the corrupt dictator of Cuba, Batista. Fidel Castro got in the way of that. Poor Cubans traded one tyrant for another). Roth took advantage of Fredo's resentment toward Michael & his being "weak & stupid" & enlisted Fredo's help through Johnny Ola. Rocco was probably also involved. As head of security, he may have let the gunmen onto the property & opened the drapes. He kills Roth at the end knowing it was a suicide mission, maybe to atone for having betrayed Michael... Brando wasn't in the flashback at the end because the studio wouldn't pay him what he wanted! 😠 Probably Woltz's revenge for Khartoum! 🐴 (just kidding)... Becoming "legitimate" did mean stopping all illegal/criminal activities... Michael moved the family to Lake Tahoe, Nevada, same state as the Las Vegas & Reno hotels, casinos & brothels they operated... The NYC scenes were set in "Hell's Kitchen", on the West Side of Manhattan... I've got a few more tidbits but I need a break 😄... That was an after-hours live sex show in Havana where Fredo revealed himself as the traitor... Michael brought Frank Pentangeli's brother over from Sicily to convince Frank not to testify & preserve their family's "honor". Frank kills himself in exchange for Michael taking financial care of his family, as per Tom's promise... Frank had taken over as Captain of Clemenza's crew after he died under mysterious circumstances. In real life, the actor who played the older Clemenza demanded his girlfriend be in the movie. The director, Francis Ford Coppola, fired him on the spot & created the Frank Pentangeli character to replace him... Catholics typically have an open casket at the viewing, unless the deceased is horribly disfigured beyond even all the powers & skills of the funeral director, as was the case with Tommy in GoodFellas 🤕... Last one: The treatment for baby Fredo's pneumonia is called "cupping" or "fire cupping". Supposedly removes toxins, been around for centuries. Doubtful it did Fredo much good.

Thanks a lot Dawn! 👍

Godfather II: Italian Boogaloo

Bartleby

I think you may have missed the part Dawn where Vito as a little boy is being processed and registered at Ellis Island when he first arrives to the United States. It’s the American immigration officer who simply see’s the Italian names of his name and hometown and assumes them together and registers his name as Vito Corleone It was the clerical error of the immigration officer that dubbed young Vito as Vito Corleone in the United States. This kind of thing was known to happen as you saw the overwhelming number of immigrants coming in and many spoke no English.

Alan Jones

I take issue with your assessment of Kay's attitudes. She did NOT buy into the criminality of the family business when she married Micahael. It was Don Vito's plan that Sonny take over the criminal enterprise, while Michael stayed "clean," perhaps with a view to running for Senate or even President. But events drew him into the criminal side of things after he and Kay were already married. Then he promised her that he would clean up the business within five years and go legit, leaving the criminal activities behind. But he broke that promise too. She was never onboard with the criminal enterprise, though she tolerated it for many years, until she realized that he was too invested in it ever to change. I admit that aborting their child was a terrible thing to do. But by that time, they had both acted in bad faith with each other. So he doesn't get a free pass on the breakup of their marriage, not from me. He was to blame at least as much as she, maybe more so.

Louis Marzullo

But Michael killed Sollozzo & Capt. McCluskey BEFORE he & Kay were married & it was his idea. Then he disappears for over a year, the reasons for which are never explained to her, obviously. Not exactly a trust-building act. So I think she was lying to herself when she got into that car with him in part one, as was Michael when he told her "That's my family, Kay. That's not me". I detected an unmistakeable air of pride when he told her the Johnny Fontaine story. And she did not look horrified & repulsed, more like mildly shocked but intrigued. I think his promise to make the family legitimate was always a lie, especially after his first wife & brother were killed. He needed a wife to bear him male offspring to carry on the family biz & give him the air of legitimacy & respectability of a man who is married with children. I'm not saying Kay didn't love him but she was also attracted to the wealth & power & knew in her heart at least from the point of his return from Sicily that Michael was never going to leave "the life", imo. He even told her he was working for his father now. That said, I agree that Dawn was too easy on Michael ("How can she leave him, he's so handsome!" 😄) but I think that would change with at least a second viewing of both films, which is almost a necessity!

Chris

Spot on except for one thing. No way was Rocco involved. When Rocco first came on the scene in part one, they referred to him as "Michael's Luca Brazi" Rocco wouldn't have betrayed. Michael anymore than Luca would have betrayed Vito.

Louis Marzullo

Hmm. I just don't believe Fredo opened the drapes. When he says "I swear to God I didn't know it was gonna be a hit, Mike", I believe him. Tom also says he believes Fredo "doesn't know anything" of consequence. Fredo was by Michael's side the entire party, while Rocco was in & out of the house, as when he dragged Deanna to her bedroom. Whoever opened the drapes had to do it after Kay fell asleep. They'd have to be very "cat-burglar" about it. Fredo probably would have tripped over one of Anthony's toy trucks. Also, who killed the two gunmen? Why did Michael have to emphasize to Rocco a second time to keep them alive, after Rocco weakly says "we'll try"? I always thought of Al Neri being more akin to Luca Brasi than Rocco. He was Michael's #1 enforcer.

Mark Crawford

This was a great reaction video! In an age where being "critical" of something is constantly lauded and rewarded, the simple act of appreciation is a welcome relief.... I do think it is funny that you are so "Team Michael". And perhaps it is valid to say that readings of this film have been too soft on Kay and haven't taken into account her own willing blindness when getting involved with Michael upon his return from Sicily in Part One. Over the years, I've come to the view that the theme of Part Two is confidence - and its two distinct manifestations, positive and negative. The confidence of the Young Vito reflects the confidence of a booming America that is opening itself up to immigration and building its great cities such as New York. But the confidence of Michael is the paranoid confidence which never lets other people in. I mean, how else are we to take the idea that the people we should keep closest to us should be our enemies, if not an indicator of clinical paranoia!? And this also reflects Michael's time - the paranoid Cold War era of the 1950s. One final observation is a parallel between Part One and Part Two (one of many parallels, of course)... You will notice that both films feature only one moment when the music truly starts blaring on the soundtrack. In the first film, this is when Michael kills Sollozzo and Captain McClusky - a moment in which he affirms his commitment to the personal family, a committed Corleone son and brother. But in Part Two, this blaring music happens as the Cuban people rise up in revolt, affirming not the brotherhood of one's personal family, but the universal brotherhood of mankind.

Right in line with Dawn not liking women in general. Hell, she wanted Grace Kelly to spend life in prison for cheating, meanwhile trying to coach her two would-be murderers to success. The only one she kinda liked was Eva Marie Saint...who basically lied and manipulated Cary Grant for most of the movie. 🤔

Louis Marzullo

She also liked Clarice Starling, Rosemary Woodhouse & Marie Kreutz at least but agreed, these are exceptions that prove the rule. She's never denied it, that's for sure... Oh & Calamity Jane!
