This is extremely important so whatever you're doing right now, PAUSE, answer this and then you can resume 😏

Which one is the best???? The Godfather or The Godfather Part II???? There HAS to be a best but I just can't decide. It's not fair and I'm losing too much sleep over it so help me make the call! I need to be well prepared for when this comes up in every day conversation. Please stop my brain from working overtime! The poor thing isn't used to it 🤪

P.S. please be nice and respectful of others opinions 😇

Part 1. That classic end shot.

Ceryk

Honestly never watched either of them

Pat Cecil

well 2, BUT, that's not fair because it would not be there without the classic that is one

Eric Bonham

You can't just tell me to stop what I'm doing. I was driving. I hope that old l hit will be ok.

james flack

Which one had the most oranges in it?....🤔😎

Toc

You need both, they're a set, I consider them one movie, I saw them both for the first time the very same night so there's even less difference to me. HOWEVER, having said that.......the original is obviously the right choice! See, at first people were a little lukewarm about Godfather Part 2. Then after rewatches they started re-evaluating it, and you'd say....."You know, The Godfather Part 2 is actually great.....in fact, it might be better than the first one!" You'd say that just to emphasize how great the second one was! Then......like a game of telephone and mass conformity, it just became a meme that people have adopted, basically. The first one has Brando. The first one has Sonny. The first one has Sonny getting splattered all over the road, most spectacular, heartbreaking death in moviedom, not to mention the twenty minutes leading up to it. You can't have the second one with the first one. Lastly: the second one is slightly murky unneccesarily, due to Danny Aiello unneccasrily ad-libbing "Michael Corleone says hello" when he strangles Frank Pantangelli (why would he even say that?). And who hasn't watched The Godfather Part 2, gotten caught up in one section and hadn't had the twinge of disappointment when it switches to the other section? We get over it immediately because the movie is so great and we admire the structure......but I posit that little twinge is something we don't have to live with in the first movie. And so, since we're splitting hairs, both movies being masterpieces, I give the first movie the edge. PS: The abortion/miscarriage stuff seems shoehorned in to give Diane Keaton something to do, since she had become a big star between the first and second movie, due to the hit comedies she was making with Woody Allen. I don't buy that subplot for a second.

Toc

(I think we all can all agree that the third one is a friggin' embarrassment! )

Gene Hendricks

It's a really close one (as both stories combined make up the original novel), but I have to give the edge to The Godfather. Part 2 requires you to be familiar with the characters from the first one where as The Godfather is a self contained story.

Wreath35

The Godfather Part 1.

Richard Stokes

2 I prefer but not sure if it makes it better?

Roger Freeman

I give an edge to part 1 because you have Brando. There a set though. One big movie

Jimmy Walker

The only wrong answer is to say part III was the best one out of all three movies!

Matthew Dunham

Most people consider 2 the better of the two. Just like Star Wars "The Empire Strikes Back" or "The Dark Knight" the rare exception of a sequel being superior to a 4- 5 star movie 🎬.

Budsfan67

2 is better but there can't be a 2 without a 1 so 1 is better.

Michael Hartsell

Check IMDB and or Rotten Tomatoes why ask a bunch of retards this question?

Darrell Palmer

It depends. When I was younger I preferred the second film, but as I got older the first film became my favorite. So, it depends...

Celeste McAllister

Since you asked,2 is my favorite the huge increase in the production budget was noticeable, the details of the streets of NYC a hundred years ago was amazing, missing was Don Vitto, Marlon Brando wasn't on board for a sequel..

MICHAEL STERKOWITZ

Has to be one, it is a complete film, it doesn't need two. Two needs one. The feel of one from opening to end is superb. Both are great movies, but ONE.

Bill W

I like The Money Pit!

Prophet2272

I've always preferred 2 over 1.

Chicago Artist Jon

1. 2 was a little more entertaining and more polished, but it had twice the budget so it's apples to ... oranges. 1 was groundbreaking cinema.

Martin Bech

The one with Brad Pitt in a tank top

Louis Marzullo

Hits do get botched. Shit goes sideways. Gangsters know this. Vito, Michael, Roth (first attempt) all survived... Not saying the Rosato bros figured they'd be interrupted by a cop but it could've been to dupe Frankie in case he survived. Or maybe that's just the last thing they wanted him to hear. Or maybe it was just a flaw, like the punch Sonny whiffed on with Carlo!

JD

I've always preferred part ii. Al Pacino is cool but al Pacino + robert de niro is better.

Joshua White

1 is hopeful, 2 is nihilistic. So I guess one is more enjoyable, but 2 cuts way deeper.

DougJitsu

Its all 1 6 hour movie.

Grinznmore

Needs to be watched in chronological order. Both quality films.

Carl Evans

The Godfather. It is a complete, standalone beautiful film. Can’t have Part 2 without 1. And as others have mentioned, Part 1 had Brando and Caan. So Part 1 Would have enjoyed more De Niro Vito than what we got in 2. And even more Sonny in 1.

Mark Crawford

Two, because it's way more enigmatic than it first appears. And Hyman Roth's death face is too funny for words.

Louis Marzullo

I'm in the "it's one movie" camp, like 2 acts of a play or 2 movements of a symphony... Hey, that's a mic-drop line, Dawn! You have my blessing to use it next time the subject comes up at a party 😄 Now get a good night's sleep! P.S.- More questions for the comment section, like once a month at least!

Robert Jewell

The first is the choice because it originated everything that follows, but both are masterworks. That's the brief answer. The long answer is an essay, but even the essay wouldn't say one is better than the other. But frankly I watch the first more than the second because there are so many iconic moments. So don't brow beat yourself over it because as Vito Corleone says to Michael, 'I didnt want this for you.' Feeling you have to make a decision about it, that is.

james flack

What makes you so smart? Oh, you listened in school, O.K. that explains everything........... Never mind, -Rosanne Rosanna Danna

George Roybal

You can't hav we 2 without the original. Plus all i can say is Brando..

james flack

TTM, the third installment dealt a lot with the Catholic Church and its perceived politics at the time, Hence, the film went under the radar for a lot of Godfather fans. Personally, I have always been of the opinion of watching all the movies in a series at least once, and to never, ever dissuade someone else from watching ANY movie, just because I didn't like it. -Just sayin'...

Bill Bryant

I like 2 better. Definitely liked DeNiro. Certainly both movies are great!!!

Toc

Actually that' s false. For years, every time they do a poll, Godfather 1 wins by a large margin. It's a line that has gone around for years, and it's origin was when we used to say back in the day "Godfather 2 is great.....it might even be better than the first!" (Because at first, people had a muted response to the second one that improved on rewatches. ) That line went around for decades, and that turned into "Godfather 2 is better", like a game of telephone.

james flack

TV had a series called "The Godfather Saga" many years ago, with a lot of extra footage from the first two movies. Also, it rearranged everything in chronological order, just like Grinznmore suggested. -😎

Toc

Well.....if you're going to kill somebody, there's no need to lie to them right before you do it. But more to the point, it confuses the audience unnecessarily. It's not a big deal, but if we're splitting hairs, that bothers me way more than the one missed punch, especially when everyone knows that in reality, Gianni Russo had a rib broken during the filming of that scene. So one missed punch, a whole bunch of ones that didn't miss! That scene is classic, missed punch or no missed punch. I have a couple of minor qualms about a few early connecting scenes in the first quarter of Godfather 1, but nothing like the ridiculous abortion subplot. No way in the 1950s....plus Tom Hagen won't let her out of his sight, remember? So how did she even arrange the abortion? With Tom's help? Maybe! Maybe Kay is Tom's mistress. Short of that, the idea that some WASP mob wife was going to secretly get an abortion (while she's on lockdown) in the 1950 is a bit of a stretch for me. (As well-acted as those scenes are!).

Louis Marzullo

The scene between Kay & Michael in the hotel room is one of the most emotionally intense & riveting in cinema history & completely believable within the story, imo. There are a slew of other ways they could've given Diane Keaton something to do that wouldn't have been anywhere near as compelling

james flack

TTM, seeing as you must have read the book and I had not, I therefore assume that you are a lot more informed on what was forced fed into the film than myself. So, I will graciously withdraw my previous comment. 😶P.S. Don't fool yourself, in the late 50s, just as today, there were plenty of chances to get whatever you wanted if you had the money, no questions asked. 🙄

Toc

PS: Aren't you quoting Emily Litella, not Roseanne Rosannadanna? (one word, not two)

Celeste McAllister

Learning a lot about movie history these last three years + a 3.8 gpa,I stayed awake in classes, asked a lot of annoying questions..Rosanne Rosanna Danna👍vintage SNL, my mom could imitate her...

Jeff Barnes

The best one is whichever you want it to be. In the end it's all subjective. I'm mostly an OG kind of guy, so I prefer the first.

Gary Mackley-Smith

Whilst the sequel is one of those rare times when it is a match for the original, for me the first movie is the best as it was groundbreaking and without it there would not have been a second part.

Toc

The Little Italy stuff was incredible, totally agree Celeste. If you like that part of the movie, you might want to check out Milos Forman's incredible 1980 film "Ragtime". Also Carol Kane in "Hester Street" from around 1977.

Toc

I didn't say you couldn't get an abortion if you wanted to in the 1950s; I said I don't buy that a WASP mob wife who can't even go shopping without Tom Hagen stopping her is going to sneak out and get an abortion.... in the 1950s. PS: The book sucks, don't waste your time, a perfect example of the movie way surpassing the source material. Jaws is the same way.

Toc

Louis, I completely agree with you about that scene. Sure, I find it a far-fetched plot point......but a fantastic, indispensable scene! And you're totally right: they could have given her something else to do but it wouldn't have been as riveting and emotional. I frickin' love Diane Keaton in both movies, a totally underwritten part that is 90% exposition. (most of her dialog is asking questions), and she totally makes it into something memorable and indispensable. I watch the awful actress in "Serpico" and those cringey scenes in an otherwise great movie.....and Kay could have been totally like that, as written. She really did something with that part....in a movie full of dudes chewing up the scenery!

Zack Gallardo

Why would you pit us against each other like this... WHY? 🫣

Toc

1000% agree. I tell reactors that a vote for "The Godfather" actually means Godfather and Godfather Part 2.

james flack

Dawn, I hope you're happy throwing out a very controversial question and then sitting back and enjoying the back and forth between your adoring fans. And her not even knowing that you can't have two "Best Movie Ever", let alone, hundreds of them..... But, then again, we're talking about one of nature's most beautiful creatures that ever graced the Scottish Highlands, so, I guess she can do whatever the hell she wants. 😁

Robert Nelson

GF 2. But that is a tough question. ... and play.

Robert Sackrider

Godfather 1972 Mostly b/c Brando & Caan. Flawless casting. & it’s a stand alone film. Also another amazing crime film featuring James Caan: Thief (1981)

phil v

I would go with the first one so you can get the feel of these movies. It will get you in the right mindset for the second one, too. Both are great!

Ragnar Miersch

It's been 8 hours. When can I start again? I'm really hungry.

Louis Marzullo

Star Wars, Saturday Night Fever, Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind... My sister & brother-in-law took me with them to see "Fever". I was 11. Conversation in the car on the way to the theater: "Joe, should we be taking Louie (don't laugh) to this movie?" "Ah, it won't kill him". Lmao, that was the only litmus test back then! 😄

Roddy Hutchinson

I don't think you can have a wrong answer. I llean 2 but it's close.

Michael Hartsell

Well Dawn did you get your answer? Enough already with trying to answer a stupid question.

Louis Marzullo

Hey Mike, you better brace yourself for when this happens all over again with Rocky 1 & 2 ... Personally, I can't wait!! 😂

Michael Hartsell

Let's push for Rocky every chance we get. I can't understand why we are still waiting for Rocky, and I agree 1 & 2 is a must watch ASAP.

Louis Marzullo

They're on their way! Dawn on last livestream: "Yeah, I have to do the Rocky's soon" 🥊

Rob Jones

Not really a godfather fan. I think Goodfellas is much better movie. I really like a Bronx tale too.
