Natural Born Killers was directed by Oliver Stone. Oliver Stone is a notorious and very controversial filmmaker who’s responsible for and had a hand in some of the most iconic classics of all time. Before directing himself, Stone was a screenwriter and wrote the screenplays for Conan the Barbarian, the film that was the breakout role for Arnold Schwarzenegger. Oliver Stone also wrote the screenplay for “Scarface” One of the most iconic films of all time. Oliver Stone is a filmmaker known for political and cultural commentary films as you saw here with this film. Stone actually fought and served in the Vietnam war. When he began directing, he would make three films about the Vietnam war. Known as Stone’s Vietnam trilogy. “Platoon” (1986) Inspired by his personal experiences in the war as a young man. “Born on the Fourth of July” (1989) Based on the true story of Vietnam veteran Ron Kovik “Heaven and Earth” (1993) Based on the true story of a young Vietnamese village girl coming of age as the Vietnam war raged on. (To date the only American film about the Vietnam war from the perspective of the Vietnamese) Two other MUST SEE Oliver Stone films “JFK” directors cut (1991) “The Doors” (1991) Oliver Stone had two major historical period films release the same year.

From the mid-80s all the way up into the 2000s, Oliver Stone just made masterpiece after masterpiece. You’ll want to dig into his filmography

Matt O'Keefe

I like this movie, but it is a lot of style and not too much substance. I also did not remember Rock N' Roll N***** was in this movie nor expect to hear a couple of bits of it on Dawn's channel.

Toc

Tarantino HATES this movie, lol.

Joe Lazarus

Tarantino has only seen a few minutes of it and will not watch the rest till this day. This is nothing like his original script and hates the style Oliver Stone used to make this. Oliver Stone is not a bad filmmaker, this just happens to be his worst.

Paul Newman

This is one of those movies which the quality of it is determined by how disturbed it makes you feel. The more you feel like you hate it, the bigger the compliment you are giving it

Ragnar Miersch

Sooooooo...much to unpack here. A veritable roller coaster ride through Miss Dawn's thought processes. I remember a few weeks ago I thought it would be a good idea if she watched this movie after her True Romance experience, but I forgot how psychedelically shot/edited this movie was. Now I regret having made that suggestion. Granted, she handled it with her usual grace and aplomb, but it was obvious she was disturbed at points, and it always sears my soul a bit to see her uncomfortable. With that said, I would like to point out how truly breathtaking her hair looked. That alone made this worth watching.

Robert Nelson

Horrible movie. Great cast. Great reaction.

Robert Inman

I'm pleased to note what Dawn doesn't like is just as valid as what she does like.

Richard Stokes

I do know why you say that Bartleby, and I admire Oliver Stone's work, but for me this one doesn't hit the mark

Louis Marzullo

Really enjoyed the outro, Dawn, especially your ambivalence towards the film. I felt that way about it for a long time. I'm alot older than when I first saw it & it does nothing for me now, just leaves me cold. As opposed to, say, "Badlands" (1973) or "Bonnie & Clyde"(1967), which I both still find very compelling & satisfying through the years. But loved the reaction. You hit your usual quota of LOL lines, especially wishing the Knox's good luck in the future! 🤣

Chicago Artist Jon

Pulp Fiction and Jackie Brown are my personal favorite Tarantino films even though some might find them a bit pedestrian compared to the long list of projects he’s been involved with. I don’t like him as a person but he is undeniably a talented storyteller.

Bill W

Perfect Thumbnail. 😀

Mark Crawford

Another great reaction... The key concept to grasping this film is the distinction between immediacy and mediation. We don't want to meet killers in all their horrific immediacy, but we love meeting them when the encounter is mediated by storytellers and image makers. And I think this is a really interesting distinction when thinking about reaction videos - when we watch a reaction video, we get the creator's immediate response, but we also get a mediated re-watch of the original.

Bartleby

Tarantino also says he’s never watched the movie from start to finish. He was outraged that anyone would rewrite his work. Even though he had only made Reservoir Dogs at that point and a producer of Natural Born Killers said they’re not going to listen to a guy that only made one movie that made less money than Leprechaun LOL Tarantino had his issues with the movie until the day he met Johnny Cash and his wife in an elevator by chance. Cash actually recognized Tarantino and told him how much he loved his film. Especially that Natural Born Killers. Once Johnny Cash told Tarantino how much he loved Natural Born Killers he came to terms and peace with the film.

Bartleby

This film is a masterpiece just as the numerous films he made before and after. The film was highly controversial but instantly became a classic.

Bartleby

It definitely is an experimental film that takes chances. I can obviously understand someone not liking the film. But the film absolutely is a work of art that utilizes various techniques and mediums to emphasize a statement about culture and the world we live in.

Bartleby

Oliver Stone is one of the most original and compelling filmmakers in the history of cinema. A man who’s been to war. A director who has made films that shook the foundation of the US government and spurred change at the government level of policy. Oliver Stone is a very bold director who experiments and takes chances. The nature of the experimental work includes techniques in filmmaking itself to tell a story. Stone has won as many Oscars in his career for writing and directing. That being said, Natural Born Killers isn’t the best place to start with his films. As it’s just being dropped in the deep end of his most bold and experimental. You really should have seen “Conan the Barbarian” and “Scarface” by now, which Stone wrote both the screenplays so far. Conan is a classic that launched the career of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Scarface is one of the most iconic and possibly the most quoted film of all time! Oliver Stone’s writing that’s being quoted so much even decades later. The Stone film that he directed that you probably should have started with is “Platoon” (1986) This film is inspired by Stone’s personal experiences as a young man fighting in the Vietnam war.

Right on, bro, this one sure ain't Badlands or Bonnie And Clyde! Great friggin' movies. It's not even True Romance, or Wild At Heart! Damn, I'm so dying for a Bonnie And Clyde reaction! Cannot believe there's not one reaction to that movie yet! I think it may be my pick on this channel! I can't remember! It might be Paper Moon. (I finally saw a fantastic reaction to Paper Moon on Ames' patreon. if you're looking to add a channel, Lou, I can recommend that one to you, that's a great one, dude, and a good crew, many with great taste! She did Wild At Heart too, now that I think about it!).

Toc

Yeah, I know the whole story, I lived through it, I saw Platoon the day it opened, I saw Reservoir Dog the week it opened (ditto Bad Lieutenant) I had seen Wild At Heart the day it came out, which came a few years before NBK (not to mention Thieves Like Us, and Badlands, and Bonnie And Clyde, True Romance, Kalifornia, et al). I am well-acquainted with the time period, and yeah, I've heard him "make his peace" with it in interviews. Anyways, I was just goofing, I just like punking on Stone who I find bit of a glitzy 80s-90s hack.....but there are way worse! The Doors is a joke, Born On The 4th is so miscast and designed. Nixon was great, I'll concede that. Not perfect but if I have to watch one of those tedious 90s movies like JFK or Malcom X, Nixon would win by a long shot. Hell, I'd rather watch Nixon than Schindler's List or Saving Private Ryan. I'd definitely rather watch Platoon than Saving Private Ryan, not even close! But ultimately, he was a disappointment for me after seeing Platoon. Wall Street was ok, but shlocky. I never saw the Vietnam movie he did from the point of view of the North Vietnamese. Is that a good one?

Toc

Jackie Brown, at the end of the day, is my favorite, the one I go back to the most. It wasn't that way the day I came out of the theatre! My line at first was: "Damn good movie! But not Pulp Fiction!" And that was the general reaction at the time. But that quickly changed, as soon as the DVD came out and everyone started rewatching it over and over again! His other movies, it's the first time you see it that's the best. But Jackie Brown gets better each time you watch it.

Bill W

Someone got her started on Tarantino stuff with Reservoir Dogs, and I'm sure someone probably told her she has to watch True Romance and NBK before she gets to Pulp Fiction, so she's just following recommendations.

Louis Marzullo

This platform is the standard-bearer for diversity of passionate, thoughtful opinions! Long live Dawn Marie! 😄

Louis Marzullo

Thanks, TTM. I know Ames but my circumstances only allow me one Patreon sub... Things won't always be this copacetic between us, my fellow New Yawkah! (Schindler's List tedious?? Rut-roh! 😄). But that's part of what makes this such a blast. Peace, bro ✌️

Bartleby

And stop trying to be so darn clever all the time! It gets in the way of actual understanding what’s happening in the actual movie. You trying to be overly clever is what kept you from understanding and taking in 12 Monkeys which should all make perfect sense by the end. Just guessing that none of the movie is real and just in someone’s head doesn’t mean a whole lot either way. It doesn’t make what’s happening in the film any less meaningful or with intent. So take it in before basking in cleverness! When you watched Fight Club it was such a major fail for Detective Dawn that you then overcompensated by saying what if none of it’s real? That keeps you from understanding the real things and consequences of, that are actually happening in the movie. It doesn’t make you extra clever. So stop trying to be clever and just take in what the movie is giving you.

timeless_realm

I adore your cleverness, Dawn! Please continue being yourself! Anybody who mouthes off to you can just head for the door. We’re here for your reviews, and not interested in anybody else’s opinion of your style. You’re doing great and I appreciate all your hard work! Never change!

Duke Pootentooter

Detective Dawn is my favorite part of this channel. Whether she figures out the giant twist in the first 3 minutes, or guesses wrong at every turn throughout the whole movie, I am thoroughly entertained. And it gives a much different viewing experience than just rewatching the movie on my own. Vive la Detective Dawn!!
