Awesome reaction!:)

It is odd that some actor are known by one role they played, Stumpy, OL Mose (Searchers), Moma (Grape of Wrap) and not by their real names.

You noticed how deep Lauren Bacall's voice was. That was because of director, Howard Hawks, he found tall, slender women, with deep voices sexy. So, he asked her to speak with a deeper voice than her normal voice, and it became her thing. They even named a medical condition after them called Bogart-Bacall syndrome. It's something about when you continually speak with a low voice or a voice out of your normal range it causes your voice to change or become hoarse or something. I'm not a doctor, I just know they named it after them. Also, this movie was popular so director Howard Hawks teamed Bogart and Bacall again in The Big Sleep (1946), a movie you really ought to watch sometime.

Mike McLaughlin

Eddie, the great character actor Walter Brennan. In late 30s and early 40s, he was nominated four times for Best Supporting Actor Award. He won 3 times. Three Oscars for Come And Get It (1936), Kentucky (1938), The Westerner (1940). You were correct in your Casablanca comment. Gerard, the guy who spoke with Bogie at the hotel bar was played by Marcel Dalio. He played Emil, the roulette croupier at Rick's.

Great Reaction Dawn Marie! To Have and Have Not is one of those sleepers that a lot of people don't know about! I was really glad that you watched Rio Bravo first and how much you enjoyed Stumpy! You would definitely vibe with Eddie! Maybe someday someone will suggest Support Your Local Gunfighter (Comedy Western) Starring James Garner and Stumpy playing a Bad Guy with lotta bad luck.

Ragnar Miersch

I swear, nobody laughs more at Dawn than Dawn does. I was on the edge of my sea waiting for her to recognize Walter Brennen. One of the main reasons I chose this movie was to see the look on her face when she saw her ol' pal Stumpy and she paid me off in spades. I know Dawn likes our picks and I know we enjoy Dawn liking our picks but man o' man there's nothing like sitting in the old man cave with her and laughing (sometimes crying) 'til it takes me away from all the cares and woes of the world. Some of you may think I gush too much over her, and that's fine, but of the dozen or so reactors I Patronize, Dawn is the ONLY one I would sit and watch the "Full reaction" with. Her whole persona is infectious in the most delightful way and I, for one, am glad she decided to add to her family's finances by choosing this medium. It will be a dark day for us all if Hollywood ever comes calling and we lose her. P.S.....Sorry about the back-to-back picks. Just the luck of the draw. I hope they were to your liking as well, my friends.

While I am happy for Ragnar I think it is quite unfair that once someone wins the lottery they get entered again. Winners should be excluded so all of DM's supporters get a chance. I will be downgrading my membership now, sorry but that's how I feel, and I think I express that feeling for a lot of longtime supporters.

Thank you for reacting to this, one of the great adventure romances. The pianist, Cricket, was played by composer Hoagy Carmichael who wrote many great songs including: Stardust, Georgia on My Mind, Heart and Soul, Skylark, and Old Buttermilk Sky. By the way, you might have noticed the many similarities with Rio Bravo by the same director.

Bartleby

I disagree. The genuine randomness of the draw is the only thing that is fair. If people began being removed from the Patron Pick draws, because they’ve won once, that would only encourage them to stop being members at that level. No point otherwise. Dawn would be whittling away at Patrons who are willing to support at higher tiers for that opportunity of the Patron Pick. Maybe there might be new people to come in and replace those tier members. Maybe not… Not fair to ask Dawn to alienate higher tier members.

Robert Inman

Dawn, I enjoyed your reaction and the film! Fyi, a conch (pronounced conk) is a large marine shellfish that is the source of some great seafood, conch fritters etc - think abalone. Tastes like scallops, but chewyer. The liquid anesthetic the lady spilled had to have been chloroform - if it had been ether, the place would have exploded from the open flame nearby ;)

John Lawton

To answer Dawn’s question: “Queen Conch” is a sea snail common to the Caribbean, often used as bait. Conch shells can be quite attractive decorations.

Bill W

Yes, all the reasons Bartleby said. Everyone has the same odds at winning every time. I'm sure you wouldn't complain if you won twice.
