I don't say this often but this is one I am pretty happy about not seeing earlier. My poor heart can't handle the Jodie Foster scenes 😭

Taxi Driver was written by Paul Schrader. He wrote it in a period of struggle and isolation. The story is also in part inspired by Arthur Bremer. Bremer was a lone gunman who attempted to assassinate Governor George Wallace when he was running for president. The Governor survived the shooting but was left permanently paralyzed. His hope for the presidency were dashed. Screenwriter Paul Schrader looked into this man and took inspiration from him in writing the story. There’s a great irony in this because when Taxi Driver came out, a man named John Hinckley saw the film and it left a deep impression on him. Hinckley was a lonely, unstable man who became obsessed with the film and even infatuated with the actress Jodi Foster as a result. He identified so strongly with Deniro’s character that he was inspired to attempt to assassinate President Ronald Regan. In 1981, Hinckley shot the President as he was stepping out of a building and surrounded by Secret Service. No one saw it coming. Hinckley claimed he shot Regan to impress Jodi Foster. He was found not guilty by reason of insanity and sent to an institution for the criminally insane.

Great commentary once again. I loved your honesty about this movie not being for you, and it made me even more wishful that you do Collateral (2004). Extremely well-made, extremely underrated. Ripe for a proper commentary like you always provide.

Jimmy Walker

John Warnock Hinckley Jr. (born May 29, 1955) is an American man who attempted to assassinate U.S. President Ronald Reagan as he left the Hilton Hotel in Washington, D.C., on March 30, 1981. Hinckley was reportedly seeking fame to impress the actress Jodie Foster, with whom he had a fixation.

I'm just really pissed that the DVD cover has a picture of De Niro with the mohawk. What the hell are they thinking!

Dawn, this is a top ten all-time film for me but I totally get why it didn't connect with you. It is relentlessly grim, ugly & bleak. Yes, some very bad guys get killed but if Travis' original plan to assassinate the Senator worked, we wouldn't even have gotten that! No heroes, no romance, no real friendships, no happy endings (you're spot-on about the ending probably not being real), not even any humor, really. So, as you astutely asked, what is it supposed to be? I think it seeks to provide not so much an answer but more of a context to ask & ponder the question "How does someone like Travis come to be?" Of course, a 2-hour movie can only do so much but for me, this one does it better than any other & it is a more important question than ever almost 50 years later. Travis' mental illness is clear & his isolation & loneliness is making it worse, day by day. He was honorably discharged from the Marines. Was he in Vietnam? Most likely. Is that where he got that hideous scar on his back? Or was he abused as a child? Or both? He seems alienated from his parents as much as from the rest of the world, calling them "Father" & "Mother" in his letters... Anyway, loved that you could appreciate the quality of this movie without necessarily liking it. And your instinct to want to reach out to people in distress & give them a boozie is just the best. The best. ☺️❤️🌻

Dawn, in another lifetime I worked a few years as a sommelier, and there are wines I could understand the reasons they were were considered "great" without wanting to drink them myself. I view movies the same way. You get the same prerogative 👍

Yes, that is indeed Peter Boyle, the dad from Everybody Loves Raymond & The Creature from Young Frankenstein... The man who wanted to kill his cheating wife is Martin Scorsese, the director. You can also spot him briefly sitting outside Pallantine HQ the first time we see Betsy... Sport had a "drug nail" on his pinky for scooping up & snorting cocaine out of. Jesus from The Big Lebowski had one, too. You called him a "gype" 😄 but he was also funny as f***... Travis shot the guy in the checkered suit in the face & chest. I'm not sure what you think you saw there... The actor who played the taxi office manager is Joe Spinnell, who was Tony Gazzo the loanshark in Rocky 1 & 2. He was also Willie Cicci, one of the Corleone family hitmen in Godfather 2. The one who testified that "the family had alot of buffers"... I can't see the full reaction but I'm guessing you recognized Harvey Keitel (Matthew/Sport) from Pulp Fiction (Winston Wolf, the fixer) & Reservoir Dogs (Mr. White).

Louis Marzullo

You asked so many good questions, like "What does he want?" & "Why does he want to kill the Senator?" He wants to make his mark, to be seen, to be important, to be remembered (fantasizing about doing top-secret work for the government). Unfortunately, his brain/psyche is so broken at this point, these are the best options he can come up with. His attempt to start a relationship with Betsy was sort of his last chance at "normalcy", in his mind. When that failed badly, he tried to become a "superhero", as you said, by first trying to kill a politician (they're all corrupt con-men & liars anyway, right?), then the pimps. He killed them but did Iris really go back home to her parents? And vigilantism is a serious crime especially in NYC, so it's doubtful he would have just been allowed to resume a normal life after recovering from his injuries, as you also noted.

A film, even a great one such as Taxi Driver, cannot be for everyone. I hope this viewing experience does not put you off the early work of Scorsese and DeNiro. I think you would like their earlier work on a film called Mean Streets - unlike Taxi Driver, there is a lot of humour in it and, although set in 1970s New York, it is lighter in tone. I would also recommend Paul Schrader's film First Reformed. Released in 2017, it is not a sequel to Taxi Driver, but it is Schrader's attempt to return to the same themes, albeit in a completely different context. It is a film that is "in dialogue" with Taxi Driver.

Louis Marzullo

Or as Prince once said about Bruce Springsteen, "I'm not a big fan of his music but I have alot of respect for his talent". 😁

Louis Marzullo

"He's suiting up for good or evil, I just don't know which because I still don't know who he is. It's hard to tell". That line should be the first inductee into The Movie Reactors' Hall of Fame! ☺️

Louis Marzullo

Just need to put in a good word for Albert Brooks, who played Betsy's jealous co-worker, Tom. He is a brilliant comedian/actor/writer/director whose real last name just happens to be Einstein. That's right, Albert Einstein. 😄

I think Dawn ended up not feeling good about this film for the same reasons she didn’t feel good about Apocalypse Now. Both films put the viewer very up close and personal for a story about descending into a dark violent madness. Dawn very much felt everything the filmmakers intended her to feel, and was disturbed by it, as many over the decades have. Both Apocalypse Now and Taxi Driver are known as tough films. Not ones lightly or casually enjoyed. Dawn is a sensitive and empathetic person and the extreme nature of both films can definitely be overwhelming. Martin Scorsese himself said he never imagined Taxi Driver would make the impact that it did and that it would be as embraced as the film was. If Taxi Driver had come out in any other period, it might not have. Taxi Driver takes the viewer down one lonely man’s descent into madness. And that may not feel pleasant, but Scorsese, Deniro, and the music of Bernard Herrmann artfully craft that dark journey so captivatingly. There is something so compelling about seeing the character become more and more alienated, isolated, and disturbed, until it all explodes into violence. The explosion of violence from Travis at the end feels inevitable and cathartic. Every man watching Taxi Driver can identity with some aspects of the characters loneliness and struggle.

Louis Marzullo

Of course Dawn would be the most disturbed by Jodie Foster's character & scenes. Of course. 😢
