From a very quick look online I've seen movies like Hidden Figures, Remember the Titans, The Pursuit of Happyness, Philadelphia, etc suggested. But I'd love your input as well, so let me know down below in the comments.

I'll post the poll on Saturday 😊

Comments

Tom Hartley

“A Time to Kill” with Matthew McConaghey, Samuel L. Jackson, and Sandra Bullock

Danny Noon

Million dollar baby🥊🥊🥊🥊🥊🥊 With Dawn's fav Clint eastwood

Grinznmore

The Miracle Worker (1962) Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke Academy Awards for Performance. Director Arthur Penn. 96 on Rotten Tomatoes.

David Harvey

"12 Years a Slave", "Unbroken", "Powder",

JL Green

Ok, with regard to classic; "A Raisin In The Sun". Modern; "The Verdict". Most recent; "Avengers Endgame."

Allen Bond

None of these will make the cut. A Boy and His Dog 1975 76% And Justice For All 1979 80% Jeremiah Johnson 1972 95% Norma Rae 1979 89% The Earthling 1980 87% They Shoot Horses, Don't They? 1969 84% The Elephant Man 1980 92%

Gary Mackley-Smith

Now Voyager, with Bette Davis. Wonderful film showing the struggles of a supposed ugly duckling into a beautiful swan ♥️

Joe Lazarus

Men of Honor (2000) Million Dollar Baby(2004)

Björn Karlsson

The swedish movie "Show me love" (You are aware of that one) 😉

Bernie Zwicky

The movie “The Blind Side” is a true story starring Sandra Bullock that tells the story of an impoverished young boy, Michael Oher, who overcomes his struggles and becomes an NFL (US Football 😊) star. It’s a great movie with a very touching story with lots of humor and warmth ❤️

Robert Jewell

ERIN BROCKOVICH (2000) - not sure if you've seen it yet. But if not, it's definitely a best movie ever. If so see SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK (2012). And if you want a masterful film in glorious black & white then definitely THE GRAPES OF WRATH (1940) by John Ford, you've seen quite a few of his films already and this matches the overcoming diversity theme perfectly. They're all best movies ever.

Robert Inman

Sandra Bullock and George Clooney in "Gravity" is a good time.

Franklin Silberzahn

I'd try "The Flight of the Phoenix" "In the Heat of the Night" or "Winter's Bone".

Dean J

I agree with The Elephant Man (1980), I know it's already been suggested, but maybe if you see it on here twice....

David Bennett

The Way Back, 2010, Ed Harris as the lead

Darrell Palmer

"Winter's Bone" "Erin Brokovich" "The Lord of the Rings"

Elliot Nesterman

I'll strongly second "The Miracle Worker." It is the true story of Helen Keller, who lost both sight and hearing as a infant, and her teacher Annie Sullivan. Adapted by William Gibson from his Tony-winning play, it was directed by Arthur Penn, who had also directed the play on Broadway. Anne Bancroft reprises her Tony-winning role as Annie Sullivan, and Patty Duke her Theatre World awarded role as Helen Keller. Both Bancroft and Duke won Oscars for the film.

Robert Sackrider

Awakenings (1990). Robert Deniro & Robin Williams.

Ted Little

"Lilies of the Field" (1963) with Sidney Poitier is excellent. It will also cheer you up no end.

john ruddick

Men of Honour I don't think you've done that one yet Cuba Gooding Jr. And Robert De Niro.

KG

The Pursuit of Happyness (2006) - Will Smith, Jaden Smith. True Story

Russ Hack

Dan in Real Life (2007) Steve Carell

Mike Conlin

"The Best Years of Our Lives" One of my top 5 favorite movies of all time, about 3 American servicemen returning home from WWII and trying to fit back into the lives they left behind.

Roger Freeman

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (James Stewart), Meet John Doe (Gary Cooper)

Sam Nishi Saisho

BROOKLYN (Saoirse Ronan) and/or NEWS OF THE WORLD (Tom Hanks) .. .. Pretty Please, President Of The World!

ShadowVessel π

Goon (2011), Varsity Blues (1999), The Replacements (2000). Yes they're all sports movies with heart just like Rocky. 😊

Bartleby

LOL I feel like every movie ever made was about someone’s overcoming adversity!

James B.

Over the Top

James B.

I was going to rec Over the Top just because of the absurdity of the premise. I'm glad I wasn't the only one to think of it.

Bartleby

No joke Louis! I was seriously thinking of suggesting that classic film by Werner Herzog. Then I thought. Even if it somehow made the list. It’d stand a snowball’s chance in hell of ever getting more than 5% of the vote.

Louis Marzullo

I'm already preparing myself for Over the Top to win but at least Fitz should be on Dawn's radar now 😄

Louis Marzullo

Hoping this very pleasant surprise post means that everyone is feeling MUCH better! EV-ER-Y-ONE!! (Yes, I'm going to run it into the ground!☺️)

Carl Evans

What's Love Got to Do with It (1993)

Louis Marzullo

Dawn Marie, can you write a post as to whether a brief synopsis of a suggested movie is OK with you? Need clarification on the "No spoilers" guideline. Unless you want to poll it.

Alan Jones

The Trip to Bountiful (1986). Much deserved Oscar for Geraldine Page.

Mark Crawford

Put me down as another vote for The Elephant Man... But I would also add a personal fave: "Sorcerer" (1977)

Patreot

Not the motivational type of movie you probably had in mind, but… “Gone With The Wind”

Bill W

LIVESTREAM!!

Artur Nienartowicz

The Accountant; (You Must Have Already Seen) Forest Gump; Lonesom Dove; Wings of Hope; King's Speech; Love Actually; 13th Warrior; Little Nicky; Light of Day; Erin Brokovich

Bill W

Dawn already reacted to The King's Speech. For decades Light of Day was unavailable anywhere unless you had the original VHS. Glad to see it's finally on Amazon Prime. 🤘

Bill W

In the Stallone pantheon, Over The Top ranks with Rhinestone and Stop or my Mom will Shoot. Can't believe it has even 1 suggestion let alone multiple.

Bill W

Life Is Beautiful (1997)

Bill W

Louis, the adversity is convincing someone to react to it. It's gonna require a magic spin on the Patron Pick wheel. (answering out of turn, the accent mark is a krouzek. It tells you the A makes an 'aw' or 'ah' sound. As and Os with accent marks are considered separate characters from their normal 26 letter alphabet. Please correct me if I'm wrong Bjorn.)

Louis Marzullo

Dipped in Bosco! 🤣 (That's a double reference, Bill. Seinfeld, naturally, but do you know the other? It's just as funny, imo).

Louis Marzullo

Tack! Going to assume in this case, both As would be "ahs". "Krouzek" also makes a bitchin' surname!

Björn Karlsson

There is not a swedish (as I know) word for the dots/circles at Å, Ä and Ö. Or for i and j 🙂

Björn Karlsson

The swedish alphabet has 29 letters 😃 OMG!!! The hungarien alphabet has 44 letters 😬😬

Julian Fierro

O’ Brother Where Art Thou. It’s a Coen brothers movie.

ShadowVessel π

Well, Varsity Blues is more of a coming of age story. And I'm not saying they're shot for shot remakes, I'm saying they've got the same heart as Rocky. Although it can be argued that Goon 1 & 2 are the hockey versions of Rocky 1-4. Lol

Craig Russell

8 Seconds (kinda like Rocky, but with bulls), A Walk in the Clouds (amazing love story), This Beautiful Fantastic (the best movie I never heard of!)

Louis Marzullo

"It might, it just might" 🐴🍊😁. I'd love a monthly one of those but I'm probably in the 1% there (the only 1% I'll ever belong to! 😆).

Bill W

Not saying I'd use MY patron pick on it.... but SOMEONE could.

JD

Idk, almost every movie is about overcoming adversity.... but Malcolm x with Denzel Washington... or stand and deliver... maybe.

David Simon

Best Years of Our Lives (Best Picture 1946)

Patreot

I second both of these (they have a similar theme…). “Mr. Smith Goes To Washington” and “Meet John Doe”

Trevor

The Straight Story.

Bill W

Yep, I gotcha and I think you are 1% too. I could do biannual at most. I think we'd run out quickly.

Bill W

I sent her 3 separate things. I'd like to know for sure she got at least 1 of them.

Kevin (31Mike)

Rescue from Gilligan's Island? Those poor castaways had to overcome a lot of adversity.

Bill W

We've only done 3 total, so i thought monthly would be a drastic improvement. Not really a "rule".

Julian Fierro

Or maybe we create a rule where everyone has to check with you before suggesting movies to make sure it’s something you’ll enjoy.

Samuraibry1

Mike Judge’s Idiocracy

Julian Fierro

I’m talking about you being the only one here critiquing everyone’s suggestions with your tastes as though you were producing the show. Maybe just relax, make your suggestion and move on. No need to try to control the comments.

Bill W

I didn't say anything negative about any movies except Over The Top. Also, I'm not the only one who comments on the movies. As far as O Brother...I was encouraging the suggestion. I think Dawn should watch many Coen Bros movies. If she decides to do that, I think spacing them out monthly is fair- just in case there's folks who don't like them , there's plenty of room to mix other movies in between, rather than monopolizing the whole month.

Julian Fierro

Then I misunderstood your reply. My apologies. I only pointed out that it was Corn brothers because she said she loved them.

Jinyatta

But I'm a Cheerleader!

Duke Pootentooter

I feel your pain. The package I sent 9 weeks ago is still in UK Post limbo. At this point I've resigned myself to the idea that it will never arrive, which is a shame as it included a few items that would have been perfect for a livestream unboxing.

Bill W

Duke, I hope it wasn't anything perishable. When I ship, U.S.P.S. tracking usually ends when it lands in Heathrow. Sometimes I can look it up on Royal Mail and see if it made it to her local post office. Other times it's a mystery. There's never a notification if it's been picked up/delivered.

Duke Pootentooter

It is still tracking on USPS, even though it has been transferred to ParcelForce (part of Royal Mail, apparently). It's been through customs a number of times at different locations. And it was held at 1 location for a full month, although I don't know where. Now I think it has been declared undeliverable, so who knows where it will end up. Maybe it will wash up on a beach and Tom Hanks can use the items for some dental work?

Bill W

I had one get scanned 11 times going tbrough US customs, all at tbe same airport. Then returned to me because tbe item listing wasn't satisfactorily detailed

timeless_realm

-Slumdog Millionaire -The Pursuit of Happyness -Schindler’s List -Life of Pi -127 Hours -The Theory of Everything -The Imitation Game -The Revenant -The Diving Bell and the Butterfly*

Bill W

No, I didn't quite understand the other Bosco reply either when I commented "Livestream!"

Louis Marzullo

Just that you keep "shouting" LIVESTREAM! like Peterman's mum did with BOSCO! The other was in Laverne & Shirley. Lenny & Squiggy kept yelling BOSCO! in unison when the gals won a 5-minute shopping spree at the local supermarket.

CinWin

8 Mile Alive Cast Away Erin Brockovich Freedom Writers G.I. Jane Mona Lisa Smile Ray (Jamie Foxx is absolutely incredible and put himself "through it" to play the role.
