Most scalping took place after the victim was dead. If that makes it any better for you. 😆

Jeff Barnes

Those rock formations are called buttes. Some are named because they look like that object.

Jeff Barnes

The native tribal names they use in movies are usually real tribes, eg, Apache, Comanche. How they're portrayed is another matter.

Bartleby

The funny thing is the depictions of Indians in these older Hollywood golden age westerns are a lot closer to the truth and historical realities of frontier life than the hyperbolically culturally sensitive depictions in the more politically correct westerns of later decades. Though not all, there were many aggressive violent tribes who launched murder raids, and kidnapped and violated white women. The storyline of Natalie Wood’s character Debbie didn’t make itself up out of thin air. It has basis in reality.

Casey Fairley

What an adventure! Always a thrill to see you enjoy any film! It's amazing watching your intuitive mind and lovely heart and soul steal the show of every vid, Dawn! Cheers! :)

Retro Maven

Yes, Dawn, that was Scar at the beginning of the movie when he appeared in front of the little girl version of Debbie. Marty shot him in the tent as he was rescuing Debbie, and Ethan found his dead body and scalped him for revenge. Excellent review. My mom watched you for the first time as this is one of her favorite movies, but she is concerned that you get a little too nervous watching these movies! Isn't that just like a mother! You sound better so hope you are feeling well...

Robert Inman

For what it's worth, double eagles were $20 gold coins, and the awkward calvary lieutenant late in the story was played by John Wayne's son - Patrick Wayne.

Simon

This was great. I hadn't seen this before. I wasn't actually a fan of westerns until this channel, and now I'm loving them. I am really looking forward to Once Upon A Time In The West.

Simon

Thanks Robert, interesting. Are those the Eagles mentioned in the song "nobody knows you when you're down and out"?

Robert Inman

Maybe? $10 coins were eagles, $20 were double eagles, but they basically disappeared from the public when private holding of gold currency/bullion was outlawed between 1934 and1974. Part of Roosevelt's response to the depression.

Bill W

Reverend Clayton was played by Ward Bond..who also played Father Lonegan in The Quiet Man. After this, he would star in two more films with Wayne before his death in 1960. The two girls who played Debbie were sisters Lana Wood (young Debbie) and Natalie Wood (older Debbie).

Chris Baldwin

If you want a film with a very accurate depiction of Native American's, I would recommend the greatly overlooked "Hostiles" from 2017. It star's Christian Bale as a Trooper, and Wes Studi as a Chief. It's a movie of hatred and redemption. A lot of it is in the Native language with sub-titles. So, you will need a copy that shows them. I've seen some other film's on You-Tube that there are none, and you're left to guess. Thank you.

Jimmy Walker

It has been reported many time that after watching the movie with friends Buddy Holly wrote his hit song "that will be the day" that was a line John Wayne repeated many time in the movie.

Dave Thomas

Thanksgiving marks when the Pilgrams landed at Plymouth Rock, they weren't getting on well...the were'nt equipped to winter in this new land..so the locals took pity on them and brought them Meat (turkey) and corn and potatoes to help them get through the winter..legend is they had a feast together..unsure of the actual date we celebrate on the third thursday of November...later King George promised the 7 Nation Tribes that the white men wouldn't expand into their land if they swore allegiance to him..but, long story short the British lost, and the Americans weren't happy with them for taking the british side....

Chris Baldwin

I'm seeing a pattern. It looks like you NEVER answer/respond to anybody on here. Your Patron's for Gods sake. WHY?????
