I'm torn between 5 and 6. But without a doubt 8 is the worst.

Hey Dawn, it would be awesome if you could find time to squeeze in the Family Guy Star Wars parodies- Laugh It Up, Fuzzball trilogy. It's three 1hr episodes (chapters): 1. Blue Harvest (Episode IV: A New Hope) 2. Something, Something, Something Dark Side (Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back) and 3. It's A Trap! (Episode VI: Return of the Jedi)

From what I recall, in my neighborhood Star Wars was a popular, quirky type film when it was released, but The Empire Strikes Back really started the monster franchise it eventually became. Everything seemed epic about that movie.

Alan Jones

I vote for Episode IV: A New Hope. It was the first, the original, and for a couple of years, the ONLY Star Wars. The excitement during its first run was fresh and exhilarating. Special effects were still evolving, so the visuals may look more primitive than the later ones, but this was the springboard for the series. Everything else was sequel/prequel after it. I've always felt that, in the first one, everyone was out for a romp, not knowing if they'd ever play these characters or perform these sorts of stunts again. It just felt fun and fresh and alive, IMO, more so than any of the later installments.

Alan Jones

BTW, did you mean to misspell Rogue One, or is that a sly remark?

Star Wars was mind-blowing and probably my favorite one for a long time, but Empire has grown into my favorite. It has the absolute best dialogue and easily the best performances of the franchise.

Jimmy Walker

Either 46 years ago is not that long ago or I'm freaking old (47). ;) Empire gets my vote because my daughter (she got to pick a movie to watch at bad time as a child) would not go to sleep at night until she got to hear "laugh it up fuzzy ball."

VI. The bikini. Rest of it not bad either 😜 (Please don't anyone take this too seriously. Not really a Star Wars devotee, just wanted to join in)

Hi Dawn! Complicated question for an OG fan, oddly enough. Two things to address before I answer. 1) One movie is missing off the list. The Clone Wars CGI movie. It is a MUST watch! It's the next Star Wars film that you SHOULD absolutely most definitely watch next, Dawn, imo. It speaks for itself! It's also the very LAST Star Wars movie George Lucas himself made for theaters. 2) I separate George Lucas's Star Wars made productions from Disney Star Wars made productions despite them all being in the same franchise. Why? It is not to say ALL Disney made Stars Wars sucks. I like a TON of their products too. However, some of them are truly AWFUL departures from George's OG vision that made Star Wars, Star Wars!!!! The anti Trilogy being the WORST, imo! But I digress... If I must pick one favorite from the theater releases, it's Return of the Jedi. Honestly, it's pretty equally tied with A New Hope tho but you asked for just one. Return of the Jedi just satisfies every itch with a final healthy & long scratch. There's just no better way to describe it. Yes, Empire does rock also but I place it 3rd. Keeping to films, here's my OG rundown of the rest if you're curious. 4) Attack of the Clones. 5) Revenge of the Sith. 6) Phantom Menace. 7) Rogue One. That's all I'm willing to list under favorites. The rest don't qualify, imo. I don't own ANY of them & that's on purpose.

Without true spoilers... a bit about the anti Trilogy. All three films excel as far as their VFX, music, costumes & actor's cast. But the story line for this trilogy was freaking terrible, imo. A baseless departure from the Skywalker story line that BUILT the first 6 movies. This trilogy fully earns the name, anti trilogy all by itself. Solo is well made & the story isn't horrible but Han is mis-cast. Nice try with his film with Ron Howard directing tho. It's a better try than the anti trilogy does. George Lucas claims NO part of it. I don't blame him. Each film relies upon nostalgia too heavily & NOT quality writing to be fresh & new all by themselves. Force Awakens feels like a sad rip off of a New Hope. TLJ feels like a trashy copy of Empire. Rise of Skywalker is a poor copy of Return of the Jedi. Were the last three films in the anti trilogy respectful & truly complimentary continuations of the OG trilogy & prequels story line & characters that feel like natural & real evolutions of them? Well, since George sold Star Wars to Disney, many fans have strongly different answers to that question. No one can predict how a movie will make them feel. They just react to it, period. No one is right or wrong in their likes or dislikes. However, a franchise creates its own expectations & hopes that fans support to see continue. Nuff said. :)

I picked A New Hope because it was the first movie I watched in a theater. Watching a movie in a theater for the first time and the movie being Star Wars left a huge impression on me.

A friendly PSA for Star Wars fans... Don't forget you can watch Dawn's vids on Youtube as well as here. All her reaction vids up on Youtube for Star Wars Episodes I thru IV & Rogue One are a bit easier to find & get to there for very quick viewing! BUT if you want to enjoy Dawn's FULL reactions vids of the trilogies then you gotta watch them here. I've done full watch parties of all six of the original & prequel trilogies & for Rough One(Rogue One) right here & Dawn's vids are lovely! They were all good times! Dawn, your love & passion for this franchise based on them is wonderful! Thanks for escaping into Star Wars at it's best! Btw, Dawn & fellow fans, you might have missed something from the prequel trilogy. Relax, it's a minor but cool detail. At the very end of the credits of Phantom Menace, Darth Vader's breathing can be heard as the credits finish. It's kind of creepy but a spectacular little detail by George. Last thing in the movie was Anakin became a Padawan. Nice fore shadowing of Vader coming later. Check it out! Cheers! :)

Revenge of the Sith Because this film crystalizes the tragedy of the galaxy in the Star Wars universe with the fall of Anakin, the Jedi order, and the rise of the Empire. The final scene with Anakin and Obi-Wan dueling and the emotional tragedy of it all is as good as Star Wars gets.

Retro Maven

The Empire Strikes Back, hands down. The only Star Wars movie to make the cover of Time Magazine. I still have the copy!!

Jeff Barnes

Eps IV thru VI are good. Once they began with the prequels, I didn't even get a half hour thru the first one so I gave up on the others. I guess you have to be a hard core Star Wars fan to appreciate them.

Eric Janssen

Yes, it’s real, but fans still think “May the 4th”is the day because of the stupid pun, hehehhh….Although I suspect those in Scotland would probably remember Margaret Thatcher first coming up with the pun, more than Americans would. In the US, May 25Th is the Memorial Day holiday weekend, and when A New Hope was first released (without that subtitle), Fox didn’t know what to make of the movie, and tried to “bury” it by releasing it on a holiday where they thought everyone would be having too much fun on beaches and cookouts to notice. To quote Obi-Wan, “….Good job.” 😂

Clayton Johnson

You made a mistake, did you have a Rough one, and didn't want to go Rogue.

Ted Little

I voted for VI "Return of the Jedi" because it completed the first trilogy. Frankly, I have never been able to get interested in the other films, which seem to me to be nothing more than rather poorly made cartoons.

Ragnar Miersch

You said you were looking for a new series. Why not just treat it as a new series and start from the beginning. Episode 1, the Phantom Menace could begin a whole new space Odessey for you. Nothing can compare to Firefly IMHO, but the Start Wars universe is too comprehensive and intertwined to pick and choose.

David Patterson

I voted for 'Empire'. It is a tie between that and 'New Hope', but 'Empire' is the better film. Episodes I & II ruined the franchise for me. When they remastered the original trilogy with the deleted scenes and CGI, I bought the DVD box set which included the original versions of the three films. The OG 'Star Wars' (before it was named 'A New Hope') and the OG 'Empire' are the only 2 'Star Wars' movies I will ever watch. I can't even watch ROTJ anymore. I tried watching 'Solo' since it was directed by Ron Howard, but only made it through 20 minutes before I had to shut it off.

David Patterson

2 fun facts: -The OG 'Star Wars' was the first interplanetary/space/alien related film that didn't involve Earth. -Similar to 'The Seven Samurai'/'The Magnificent Seven', The OG 'Star Wars' was a rebranding of an Akira Kurosawa film, namely 'The Hidden Fortress' (1958).

Simon

Omg. Rough One 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Michael Hartsell

The first is always the best so "The Original Star Wars Movie"

Mannygogou

my favorite is Rogue One... well technically it's Empire because it topped the first one. And the best stand alone movie is the first one Star Wars before it became Episode 4. It was a standalone movie before it was a franchise and so it feels complete and all the others relate to it and so in those ways it's the best one. Then Empire kind of beat it though. And then after many years they 'accidentally' made a great movie which is Rogue One, it took the best elements and put it all together in what feels like a reboot in the best possible way.

Devlin Domini

Empire, but Empire is only great because you already know the characters from the original.
