Julius Ceasar's last name was Ceasar. Ceasar became the title for Emporer of the Rome empire. Julius Ceasar was thought kind of like a god at the time of his death.. So that is why emporer's are from then on called Ceasar(versus Emporer). The Ceasar in this is named Marcus Aurelius.

yes, amazing film. It's one of the few that stands endless re-watching.

Absolute timeless classic, nice one for watching this! It was watching this that made me check out Oliver Reed's other work, unfortunately he passed away while they were filming this...right after drinking a group of British Navy sailors under the table in a nearby pub!

Also, Lisa Gerrard from Dead Can Dance & Hans Zimmer is a fucking amazing job on the soundtrack. So good. Speaking of good, after I saw Djimon Hounsou (the chap at the end - "Not yet") he cropped up in loads of stuff like Constantine, Blood Diamond, Guardians of the Galaxy ("STAR LORD!" "FINALLY!" haha), Shazam!...he's great in everything TBH. Also also, Gladiator 2 next year 😁

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World and L.A. Confidential are probably the best of Russell Crowe's other movies.

They said the Coliseum was built so they could flood the lower levels of the Coliseum and then recreate naval battles in the Coliseum .. .. To keep it factual to history, they filmed a very subtle shot that depicted Jewish families being thrown to wild animals on the Coliseum floor .. .. Scott felt that was a bit too much and cut that shot out of the film .. .. Our tour guide also said they had orgies in the Coliseum .. .. The Romans were a depraved bunch .. ..

For more Crowe - The Insider is exceptional. I really liked him in The Nice Guys. And I thought he did a great job in Man of Steel. LA Confidential and A Beautiful Mind are also strong, and I think you would particularly like Cinderella Man.

Russell Crowe - The Quick and the Dead, Mystery Alaska, Body Of Lies, Cinderella Man, American Gangster.

The actor who played Tigris of Gaul whose life is mercifully spared by Maximus is Sven-Ole Thorson. He is a former bodybuilder and strongman, and close friends with Arnold Schwarzenegger. He won Denmark's Strongest Man in 1983. Sven beat out Lou Ferrigno for the role (Ferrigno is best known for portraying The Incredible Hulk in the US tv series) and won the TAURUS World Stunt Award for his portrayal. Thorson was 56 years old at the time (20 yrs older than Russell Crowe)
