You will need your own copy of the movie to watch along! 😁

Another one to tick off my black and white movie list ✅ I'm becoming quite the connoisseur 😏

One of my top five favorite movies. Casablanca being number one. Peter Lorre (Joel Cairo) was the one who gave Bogart the tickets to travel at the start of Casablanca. In real life Bogart and Lorre was good friends. if I remember the story correctly, Lorri was the one who convince Bogart it was ok to be with Bacall even with their huge age difference. Bogart was going to end their relationship till Lorri told him you may live ten more years with her being happy together or you can live ten more years without her.

"to have or have not" is the next Bogart movie to watch. Besides being a great movie you are watching two people on screen falling in love with each other in their real lives.

Yes Dawn, you did see Gutman/Sidney Greenstreet and Cairo/Peter Lorre in Casablanca. Greenstreet played the rival cafe owner and Lorre was the one who had the letters of transit originally and was captured by the police at the start of the film. The trio made a few films together. Highly recommend Bogart films are The Big Sleep (1946) and To Have and Have Not (1944) where Bogie is teamed with his wife the sultry Lauren Bacall!!. Your reaction was nicely done😀!

Joel Cairo was played by Peter Lorre who, in Casablanca,, played Ugarte, the man who gave Rick the letters of transit. Gutman was played by Sydney Greenstreet, who played Ferrari, the owner of the Blue Parrot in Casablanca. This was, at the age of 60, Greenstreet's first talking film. Most of his career was on stage. Might I suggest you watch To Have and To Have Not with Bogart and Lauren Bacall. It has a much more straightforward plot and one of the most sexually charged relationships in film history.

The Sam Spade character appeared in a series of 6 novels so a multimillion dollar find at the end of novel 1 would not fit the series. 🤷‍♂️ Dashiell Hammett the writer of the Sam Spade series also had a husband/wife crime solving team series, Nick and Nora Charles. These made it to movies using the title "The Thin Man". Much lighter and with good comedy moments as well as not giving away the 'Who done it ' till the end. Dawn would enjoy those as well IMO The Big Sleep 👍👌

Robot Falcon!

Dennis Shogren

In her memoir, Mary Astor thought the script was a “humdinger.” “I didn’t have to be talked into playing Brigid O’Shaughnessy. She was attractive, charming, appealingly feminine and helpless. And a complete liar and murderess. What more could anyone want to play?”

My suggestion for your next b&w movie is to "learn" All About Eve. It won six Oscars, nominated for 14. Received four (!) female Oscar nominations.

In my opinion, if you want to see a true Alpha Male, it is Bogart in The Maltese Falcon.

Hexon66

I can just see Bogart's face sneering "Uh-huh" when you call him an "Alpha Male", just like when Gutman is pontificating. Labels like that are for the insecure.
