So MANY great things about this film. Tells a GREAT story many never knew existed before it's release. Remember Dawn that back then Black people were considered property and looked upon as inferior by white majorities in MANY places. It shows the UNREAL racism and odds that these men faced every day and their sacrifice. For greater context?? Back in 1854 the rules of engagement still abided by Revolutionary War (1776) protocols where entire regiments would stand and advance into enemy fire. This tactic was officially abandoned AFTER the civil war in large part due to the ENORMOUS causalities inflicted on BOTH sides. Also marks the real coming out party of Denzel Washington as an A list actor who garnered his first Oscar as Tripp. Throw in an incredible cast and direction with ANOTHER superb score by the late great James Horner and it's a film you never can watch enough..

Dawn, for your Christmas wish-list: Ken Burns' 9-episode documentary mini-series on the American Civil War. You'll be saying "Best. Gift. Ever." 😁

Best recommendation I've ever seen you make, or the only good recommendation I've ever seen you make. Keep up the good work.

"I'll take your place! I'll go fight for you!" Bill, now I definitely think Dawn should watch "The Messenger"; she might have been Joan of Arc in a past life! 🛡️🗡️😄

The most famous Joan of Arc movie is the 1928 silent movie The Passion of Joan of Arc. A silent movie about Joan of Arc would be even more of an F You to the YouTube subscribers and patrons wouldn’t it.

Hey Dawn! You should totally watch the silent movie The Passion of Joan of Arc It’s a classic!!

Good reaction Dawn! I don't think any of the commenters can give you comprehensive answers to many of your questions within the space of a few paragraphs. Unlike the next 2 war movies on tap, this one was intended to make a statement based on actual historic events, dramatized to support the overall theme. The Dirty Dozen is fiction based in a WWII time period, and is largely entertainment focused. Apocalypse Now is Vietnam War fiction colored by period anti-war sentiments fueled by events like the My Lai massacre - without representing actual events.

Very good reaction! Thank you!

"Apolcalypse Now" is famously based on Joseph Conrad's novella, "Heart of Darkness." In 1998, the Modern Library ranked "Heart of Darkness" 67th on their list of the 100 best novels in English of the 20th century.

Highly recommend Ken Burns' The Civil War miniseries to learn more about this event. One of the best documentaries ever, it's very engaging and dramatic.

Simon

Excellent reaction. Thanks to those who recommended the Civil War doco. I will watch it

I am from Georgia. I would explain it, but it is really something that takes time and learning to grasp. But yes, the war was basically about economic survival for the South, who had used free slave labor for over 100 years to be able to compete in the world market. When they realized that the North was serious about abolishing slavery, they knew they couldn't economically survive if they had to pay for labor. So, they fought, and lost. Bad thing is after about 10 years and with Lincoln gone, the North kinda gave up on trying to keep the South from being wretched to Black people, and it took another 100 years to get equality back on track.

I highly recommend Gone With The Wind for a view on how the South was before, during and after the Civil War from a civilian point of view. The book is great too.
