the scene that was akward was because he was trying to tell her that he loved her for years and she was dwelling in the idea that chess players could go mad because of her mom's insanity.

they write down their moves and that is how there is a record of the games that they can replay. Speed chess is very popular. You might enjoy watching chess on twitch or even starting to play online yourself. I bet people would enjoy seeing you get into the swing of it.

a fork is a position where a piece treats two pieces. Like imagine you have a knight in a position where it can attack both someone's queen and rook. if they move the rook you get their queen, if they move the queen you get their rook. so you are forcing them to loose the rook (or even the queen if it ends up in an even worse position.)

the pills are just anti-anxiety meds. it wouldn't be viewed as performance-enhancing. they don't cause hallucinations for her, but they do help her focus. her dependency isn't great but she was self-mediciating her trauma.
