So psyched!!! Akira is one of the most influential films of all time! A milestone in anime that elevated the artform to new heights. And blew open the doors for anime in the west! And will this be your first Johnny Depp film on the channel? You can never go wrong with Johnny!

Gene Hendricks

Akira!?!?! Talk about jumping into the deep end of the pool. I would have started with something a touch less ... out there, but I'm looking forward to that reaction.

Gene Hendricks

I can see that. Still, it's an odd one. I would have suggested starting with Star Blazers 2199, but that's a series so it might not have fit the bill. (It's also my favorite anime of all time, so I'm biased.)

Louis Marzullo

Welp, not looking like the best week for me but I'll be present & accounted for because: 1) I may be pleasantly surprised & 2) I want to be loved forever! 😄

Akira is a good leap into the world of Manga and Anime it will be interesting to see what you think of it. It's a very good example of the genre.

I'm curious to see how well the Pirates movie has aged.

Tommy Ivison

Last time I was in Las Vegas there was a Captain Jack impersonator on the strip that was dead on Johnny Depp

Dawn, why is there no rum? Why is there never any rum?.......Savvy! 😕

Oh, lord...Quick anime-fandom history lesson, for those who weren't around at the beginning: When Akira hit in the 80's, most in the west literally even didn't KNOW that Japan made "serious" cartoons. The comic-book fans knew Akira from the imported manga comics, but most teens were attracted to "Cool, R-rated cartoons with motorcycles and blood! Just like Heavy Metal!" Now, yes, today, more experienced anime fans will admit it: As anime movies go, Akira is punishing, overwrought, too long by half, and doesn't make one danged lick o' blessed sense. Confused new fans ask "What was the big deal?", and we honestly tell them even we didn't know, you just had to be there. But back then, telling a newbie that they had to watch Akira, Ghost in the Shell or Grave of the Fireflies was trying to get them to watch anime, period. And what makes OG anime fans facepalm to this day is not only that those three arthouse freaks frighten off normal newbie fans, but also that it's become a generational thing for thirty-five years: Fans who had some other fan make them watch Akira will make some other new first-timer watch Akira, and the cycle of abuse continues. Thanks to Blu, there's more anime out there to start with--Nowadays, it's the cliche' to tell a newbie to start with Studio Ghibli, usually "Spirited Away" or "My Neighbor Totoro"...And believe me, after Akira, you'll need them. (But then, you're lucky--In our day, "good" anime fans had to use VHS to get newbies to watch "The Castle of Cagliostro", "Project A-Ko" or "Urusei Yatsura: Beautiful Dreamer".)

Eric Janssen

In the old days, we used to say you could never show a newbie Project A-Ko, because they "wouldn't get" the genre-spoof jokes about 80's-anime tropes like schoolgirls, martial arts or giant robots. Well...thanks to pop-cultural saturation, think most people would get the jokes today. Talk about jumping in at the OTHER deep end of the pool.

Akira is a masterpiece that brought the artform of anime to new heights. A milestone in filmmaking that showed what the world what could be accomplished in the medium of animation. It’s a film that’s recommended to all lovers of cinema, not just fans of anime. Don’t let the timid try and scare you off simply because a trailblazing innovative film and science fiction story was beyond them.

Song is posted in discord for those who didn't get the Captain Jack Sparrow reference.

Eric Janssen

Making newbies "discover" anime by watching Akira because it's So Important is like telling a curious movie fan he needs to discover foreign films by "challenging" themselves with The Seventh Seal first: Yes, it'll be an experience, and probably blow open their doors of perception with dynamite, but that's not the same as ENJOYING it. Or likely ever wanting to do it again. Flies and honey--It's only the hardcore-fandom that tells newbies "You gotta run the Gauntlet of Intellectual Pain, or you'll never be in the true-believers' club!" New fans who don't know as much need something a little more persuasive than being blasted in the face by disturbing imagery from those cool enough to take it...How about something closer to what the newbie already knows, with just a tease for something more? That way, it's more about THEIR discovery of something new, not YOUR victory in the name of the True Fanhood?

Dawn, get out some dark rum, ginger beer and lime. Mix yourself a Dark 'n Stormy for the pirate movie.

Eric Janssen

Folks talking about "the Pirate movie" keeps making me think of the 1982 Kristy MacNichol teen-musical disaster. Which leads me to wondering when someone's going to react to 1983's Kevin Kline/Linda Ronstadt "The Pirates of Penzance", whose mania at the time the aforementioned mess was trying to cash in on.

If I’m going to show someone some anime, I’m going to show them some anime, and all that the artform has to offer. Your opinions are just that. They’re your opinions. You don’t speak for the anime fandom and your point of view is not the universal consensus. How many millions of people was “Akira” the first anime they’ve ever seen. And how many of those millions were fired up with curiosity and passion to find more. You’re making a lot of assumptions where you seem want to elevate yourself as some kind of authority. You’re not an authority. You’re just another dude with an opinion. Just like me. Dawn Marie’s channel is about seeing the classics that made the cultural impact. Akira is most definitely one of those classics that made a profound cultural impact. You would have her wade through less historically significant and less culturally significant films for what? Your presumptions?

john ruddick

Some Lambs Navy run would be just right or some Mount Gay Jamaican rum otherwise. I love the stuff.

Happy Hanukkah

I *love* dark 'n' stormies! The way I prepare them is as follows: I fill a glass with ice, pour in ginger beer, affix a lime wedge, and offer it to anyone interested. I then swig the dark rum straight from the bottle.

Bartleby

So it turned out she was more prepped for Akira by Rick & Morty than anything LOL
