Akira is the classic anime film that blew the doors open for anime in the west. This was the first anime film millions of westerners ever saw and ignited a passion and new wave of anime fans all over the world. This film shocked and wowed the world for its story and level of artistry in animation unknown in the west. “Akira” is one of the holy trinity of classic landmark anime. They include “Akira” (1988) “Ninja Scroll” (1993) and “Ghost in the Shell” (1995) These three classic anime went furthest towards blowing up anime around the world when the western world first started getting a taste of it.

12:55- Omg, it's Dawn Marie as an 'old lady-child'!!

Think they were actually trying to make a live action version, which probably would have sucked, but I think that has been put on indefinate hold, if not cancelled, because the original creator wanted to remake the anime. Not totally sure, but heard they might be making it a TV show this time to add more from the manga it is based on than they could get unto a movie. We'll see if that actually happens though.

That was great I'm glad you enjoyed the film. It really is a masterpiece, a real standout from its era. I remember being blown away by the animation and creativity of the story board. It is a great movie. Next to continue you need to watch Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex or if you are looking for a truly epic and beautiful film Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind is a must.

I’d say “Ninja Scroll” before Ghost. Ninja Scroll is a brilliant wild film that was a fan favorite among anime die hards since it came out. For some reason the reactor scene hasn’t gotten hip to this kick-ass classic! Nausiccaa is another awesome anime classic that seems to be overlooked by the movie reactors.

I agree Ninja Scroll should come before Ghost in a Shell particularly because it is certainly has a large influence on all other anime after it and I would also add Berserk into the mix after those two, as the influencers are clear too see in it.

Charming reaction, Dawn. Didn't think I would enjoy it as much as I did. But the film inspired in you wonder, excitement & a bunch of LOL lines. Can't ask for much more! Looking forward to hearing more about your psychic dreams next livestream (& more squid sound effects🦑)

I nominate “Ninja Scroll” (1993) subtitled for this particular anime is preferable. There are plenty of great anime classics that do have some great English dubbings. “Ninja Scroll” is more effective and satisfying hearing it in Japanese. Especially as it’s a historical of Japanese culture with Japanese myths and fairy tales woven into the mix. You want weird and wonderful Dawn… This anime has got it in spades!

Simon

Fantastic and unexpected reaction. Loved it, and I think Dawn did much better than I did 🤣 Another vote for Ghost in the Shell here

I have never heard the phrase Oocha Boys before in my life. And I live a few blocks from an Irish bar so I’ve been called a lot of things. I’m gonna need a little help defining this one.

I'd prefer it to remain shrouded in mystery but it sounds like something a football fan in the U.K. would shout while cheering on their favorite team ⚽

FYI Dawn Marie There’s a phenomenal 8 episode anime mini series that just debuted on Netflix a couple months ago. “Pluto” It’s a gritty dark reimagining of a classic story arc from the original anime Astro Boy Astro Boy is an iconic manga/anime character in Japanese culture. From Osamu Tezuka The Godfather of manga and anime. The character Astro Boy in Japan is as Iconic as Mickey Mouse in America. Astro Boy revolutionized manga and anime in Japan and essentially birthed a new industry and cultural force in Japan. The anime mini series “Pluto” is a gritty dark reimagining of a classic story arc from Astro Boy. Based on the Pluto manga. This is a science fiction murder mystery. This is an 8 episode anime murder mystery mini series for Detective Dawn!! You will love this series Detective Dawn…. And you will love these characters. The English language dubbing for this is solid and skillfully executed. It’s good for this.

Oh, I know I'm completely wrong. That's just what it sounds like to me. In Italy, they scream 'FORZA, RAGAZZI', which is 'GO, BOYS'

Louis Marzullo

Oh, I think there's a comma after 'Oocha', Jon. It's not like "Hey, there's an Oocha Boy! Let's go beat the crap out of him!" It's "Oocha, boys!" 😄

Interesting. Lots of European immigrants here in Chicago. I’ve never heard that expression. I am saying HEEPS a lot now though.
