Hey folks! In case you haven't seen that post yet, sharing it here. Mastodon 2.0 has been released, with a truckload of improvements. The linked post addresses more of a mainstream crowd, the angle is "what's changed since April", so it contains a few more things than just what 2.0 brings. The release notes for 2.0 specifically are here: https://github.com/tootsuite/mastodon/releases/tag/v2.0.0 They are quite massive, but also more technical.

We had a huge influx of new users following first the #WomenBoycottTwitter hashtag and then the 2.0 release which hit the Hacker News frontpage and stayed there for one and a half days. The linked Medium post has actually been shared even more than the "Welcome to Mastodon" post I wrote in April!

My community manager and I sent out e-mails to journalists who wrote about Mastodon in the past. A release like this is worth writing about and we're hopeful that they'll pick it up.

The weeks leading up to the release were very, very stressful. It was a big one, it was very important, and there was a lot of responsibility in committing to a major version bump as everyone had big expectations for it. To avoid burning out I am taking a short break from development. Of course, I can't take a break from everything - still a lot of public relations and managing people to be done. But at least my brain is taking a rest from the code.

Overall, everything's looking great. Software's in a good place, popularity is rising, there's cause for celebration, and of course, nothing would be possible without your support. Thank you!

Mastodon 2.0 - Eugen Rochko - Medium

The Big Emoji Update About 6 months have passed since April, during which the major mainstream breakthrough of our decentralized social network took place. From 20,000 users to almost a million! What better time to run through a couple examples of what's been introduced since then?

It's great to see such wisdom. That's reassuring for the sustainability of the project. Don't forget that you can also take real holidays. There is not reason people doing libre/open source software and using sane funding models shouldn't take real rest. edit: should → shouldn't
